Title: Advancing Biological Mass Spectrometry for Proteoform Screening and Protein-DNA mapping
by Francisco Alberto Fernandez-Lima, Florida International University
Abstract: Recent innovations in speed, accuracy and sensitivity have established mass spectrometry (MS) based methods as a key technology for the analysis of complex mixtures. MS techniques are emerging as the analytical gold standard for identification and characterization of molecular components with wide applications in forensic, environmental and biomedical research. My research group focuses on the development of emerging technologies for the characterization of biological systems at the single cell level, with emphasis on the 3D localization and quantification of molecular species with sub-micrometric spatial resolution. We utilized new, multidimensional separation workflows combining s…

Meeting ID: 828 5937 0639 | Passcode: 532587, "Can Spintronics Help Make Computing More Efficient?"
Abstract: In this talk, I discuss why computer designers are looking to develop novel ways of computing for a variety of common but specialized tasks, why spintronic devices, particularly magnetic tunnel junctions, might make valuable contributions to this process, and why success requires considering all levels of the computational stack from devices through the architecture. I illustrate these points in terms of three recent computational platforms my colleagues and I have worked on using magnetic tunnel junctions. The first example shows experimental results on binary neural networks based on crossbar arrays of magnetic tunnel junctions used as programmable resistors. Another describes…

Title: Protein bioconjugation and chemical evolution in nonaqueous systems
by Jun Ohata, North Carolina State University
Abstract: Selective and efficient reactions of polypeptides in living systems are enabled by a range of enzymes and molecular machinery even in a complex mixture of cellular components. During the past decades, nonenzymatic reactions or chemical modification of polypeptides have been extensively studied by addressing challenges of aqueous chemical transformation of the polyfunctional biomolecules for various purposes such as creation of therapeutic agents as well as investigation of biomolecular processes in many contexts. Nonetheless, realization of selective, effective chemical reactions of polypeptides in aqueous media represents a formidable challenge. Recognizing the existence of nonaqueous environments where polypeptides would not necess…

Title: Shape Shifting Molecules and Microbes
by Monica McCallum, U Penn
Abstract: Abstract: All living organisms utilize small molecules for communication between their cells. For microscopic single-celled organisms, those small molecule signals are released into their local environment. When those molecules are received by other individual microbes of the same species, these are ‘quorum signals’ which allow populations to coordinate their actions once they have reached sufficient density. In the fierce competition for resources in these microscopic environments, microbes also create and release small molecules that interfere with their neighboring microbes, either by stealing key nutrients, disabling, or destroying the rival microbes. These bioactive small molecules, or natural products, have been the source of new antibiotic drugs for the past half century. With the increase in…

Title: Design and Application of New Pericyclic Strategies
by Christ Newton, University of Georgia
Abstract: The overarching theme of our research program concerns the development of new and general pericyclic strategies that enable efficient access to complex cyclic frameworks of biological importance. A hallmark of our approach is the design of atypical cycloaddition reaction partners that are at a high oxidation level (i.e. large degree of heteroatom incorporation and/or unsaturation) in order to confer unique reactivity, while also minimizing the need for redox manipulations post cycloaddition. A significant challenge within this area is the development of methods that remain operationally friendly, for highly unsaturated heteroatom-rich molecules often exhibit challenging stability profiles. Generally speaking, our approaches leverage fundamental structure and r…

Title: Chemistry for Medicinal Chemistry
with Andrew McNally, Colorado State University
Abstract: Pyridines and diazines are ubiquitous in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, yet there are limits in synthetic methods that can directly functionalize the C–H bonds in these structures. We will show three distinct approaches, using phosphorus, ring-opened intermediates and deconstruction-reconstruction, that enable selective functionalization of these heterocycles into a range of valuable derivatives. A range of C–C and C–Heteroatom bond formations are viable, and the chemistry functions on structures typically encountered in drug discovery programs. Our lab has also performed mechanistic and computational studies of the regioselectivity of these reactions and the phosphorus ligand-coupling processes involved.
