Title: Harnessing Structural Dynamics in Emerging Semiconductors
Abstract: Static semiconductors, like silicon, powered the first century of semiconductor technology, but emerging frontiers now demand dynamic, adaptable semiconductors. For example, bioelectronics, neuromorphic computing, and reconfigurable photonics require semiconductors that adapt to their environment or change their optical properties on demand. In this talk, I will show how our group probes and then controls structural dynamics in two families of emerging semiconductor materials, conjugated polymer mixed conductors and hybrid metal halides. First, I will show how tuning polymer morphology and ion chemistry dictates how ionic and electronic charge carriers move through conjugated polymer mixed conductors using nanoscale imaging, in situ spectroscopies, and high-throughput robotic platforms driven by machine learning. In the secon…

Adaptive navigation in bacteria and flies
Successful chemical navigation requires organisms to continuously adapt their strategies to evolving signal statistics and environmental context. Both the extraction and utilization of sensory information are dynamically regulated over time. I will present experiments investigating how bacteria and fruit flies implement such adaptive strategies. Specifically, I will show how an isogenic bacterial population leverages the interplay between phenotypic diversity and collective migration to optimize its navigational behavior across varying environments. If time permits I will conclude by discussing how fruit flies modulate their reliance on distinct directional cues derived from the same signal when navigating toward an odor source under different wind conditions.

Lessons for a Warming Planet: A Vital History of U.S. Environmental Law
Wilkes Center
The relationship between humans and the environment in the United States reflects tales of countless contrasting and overlapping trends, movements, and tensions. Law has cultivated both the planet’s biggest environmental threats and its most creative innovations for protecting human and ecological health. U.S. laws have driven both exploitation and temperance; destruction and restoration; and resistance and adaptation.
Lessons for a Warming Planet showcases the fundamental role the law has served in reckoning with environmental harm in the United States. Authors Alejandro E. Camacho and Brigham Daniels explore the full arc of U.S. environmental legal history across five major periods in the United States, reaching as far back as North America’s colonization and ending with the present. Through this rich history, the book considers the ways leadership, social movements, political coalitions, information, and technologies have both been catalyzed by the law and have advanced environmental change.

"Knowns, Unknowns, and Living Stones: What We Do and Don’t Know About Great Salt Lake's Microbialites"
Description:
In addition to birds, brine shrimp, halophilic microbes, and nematodes, Great Salt Lake is home to a spectacular community of microbialites. These lumpy beige rocks host a diverse microbial ecosystem that forms a vital piece of the lake's food web but are under threat as the lake shrinks. Beyond their modern ecological role, the lake's microbialites serve as complex paleoenvironmental records and may offer clues to understanding the early evolution of life on Earth. This talk will explore what we know, what we think we know, and highlight critical gaps in our understanding of Great Salt Lake's microbialites.

Title: Excited-State Catalysis in Organic Synthesis
Abstract: The development of efficient strategies for the synthesis and diversification of complex
molecules remains a central challenge in organic chemistry. The Ngai laboratory seeks to address this
challenge by developing new approaches to build and modify molecules, with the long-term vision of
turning light into medicine. Our research focuses on the use of visible-light-driven excited-state catalysis
to transiently reprogram molecular reactivity and enable transformations that are difficult to achieve
under conventional ground-state conditions. By combining photochemistry, radical reactivity, and
transition-metal catalysis, we aim to establish general platforms for selective bond construction and
late-stage functionalization of structurally complex molecules. These efforts include the development
of new catalytic…
