Economics CAKE Talk: Soumitra Shukla

Economics All are welcome to attend Colloquium for the Advancement of Knowledge in Economics (CAKE) talks sponsored by the Economics Department in the College of Social and Behavioral Science.  Soumitra Shukla will be presenting on "Interviews" Abstract: Interviews allow employers to learn about workers, but do they also enable workers to learn about firms? Easy interviews appear to convey poor "fit'' as those who accept offers after easy interviews are one-half of a standard deviation less satisfied with their jobs and 14 percent less likely to remain with their employer for at least one year. Analysis of interview narratives using a large language model reveals that difficult interviews signal colleague ability and opportunities for skill development, whereas easy interviews convey a nonselective process. 40th Annual Jefferson B. Fordham Debate - Institutional Neutrality and Other Academic Freedom Controversies

A record number of universities have recently announced—by either adopting a policy or affirming the principles of institutional neutrality—that they will stay silent on social and political controversies. Several states, including Utah, have forced their public universities to adopt policies of institutional neutrality. Proponents of institutional neutrality argue that it is an essential condition of academic freedom because university statements on issues of the day chill the speech of faculty and students with dissenting views. Opponents contend that institutional neutrality is used to selectively punish and shut down speech as well as to mask inherently value-laden institutional decisions (such as investment decisions). U.S. universities have navigated unprecedented changes under the Trump administration, which has expanded Title VI oversight; sought to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives; revoked student visas and sought to deport students; increased taxes on university end… Event Categories: Lectures. Liberal Arts and Sciences Synergizing Opportunities Seminar Series

The formation of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences provides an opportunity to catalyze connections among faculty who previously might have been siloed in their respective colleges. LASSO offers a way to address this enduring challenge. LASSO will bring together center directors in CSBS, Humanities, and Science in a series of conversations that will stimulate dialogue, foster new networks of collaboration, and lay the groundwork for interdisciplinary projects. Centers are hubs of intellectual collaboration and outreach. The new LAS structure offers an opportunity for Center Directors to begin to learn about our respective programs, research, and outreach as a first step in developing new collaborative projects, sharing research, and making our scholarly work more fully accessible to the LAS community. We will begin with brown bag discussions about the centers in the three colleges, then in the spring move to conversations that will focus on topical issues that have cross-cutting LAS stakeholders. … Campus Locations: Sutton Building - Frederick Albert (FASB).
