REd Online: Advanced Consideration of the Criteria for IRB Approval of Research

(Formerly known as "REd Online: Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Human Subject Research")  Participants will develop a basis for understanding the background and regulations for the protection of human research subjects. The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) will be discussed including the informed consent process, vulnerable populations, Serious Adverse Event (SAE) reporting, inclusion and exclusion criteria, HIPAA authorization, and protocol applications. The Electronic Research Integrity Compliance Administration (ERICA) program will be presented and IRB documentation standards will be explained. REd Online: Multi-Center Research Using a Single Institutional Review Board (SIRB)

Use of a single institutional review board (SIRB) for multi-center research requires additional components to ensure that an agreement for institutional reliance on a SIRB is established, that the requirements of all participating institutions and human research protection programs (HRPPs) are being met, and that all investigators and study team members are aware of their roles and responsibilities to the SIRB as well as to their local institution. This presentation will explain the specific details of each of these additional components and will include instruction on how to use the University of Utah IRB as the SIRB for multi-center research. Participants will learn how to navigate and properly answer questions for Institutional Review Board (IRB) Electronic Research Integrity and Compliance Administration (ERICA) applications to ensure a complete and orderly IRB submission. Types of applications to be explained include the new study application, the amendment application, and the continuing review application including final project reports. Participants will become familiar with the IRB application process, when it is required to submit each type of application, and how to avoid common mistakes made when completing these applications.
