Copyright Confusion: Demystifying Creative Commons Licenses for Industry-Funded Research
Creative Commons (CC) licenses are a series of copyright licenses designed as alternatives to standard copyright licenses. CC licenses allow authors to retain copyright of their work while setting conditions for reuse of the work. In open access publishing, authors frequently pay an article processing charge to publish under a CC license. The CC license applied to the work dictates how content can be reused, and the selection of an inappropriate license can result in long-term administrative and financial burdens. This webinar will give participants an overview of CC licenses in the context of industry-funded research publications. We will explore the factors to consider when selecting a CC license and the implications of selecting each type of CC license. We will also discuss case studies that show the consequences of CC license selection on content reuse. At the end of this session attendees will:

Founded in 2001, Creative Commons has become one of the most used open licensing schemes for those engaging in open scholarship. Understanding the nuances and complexities of using these licenses in your work can be a daunting task, especially with the rise of content creators using outdated versions of licenses for profit. This session will provide participants with a more in-depth understanding of Creative Commons licenses and some of the potential pitfalls when using and assigning licenses to your work.
