Hugo Rossi Lecture Series: Dr. Natasha Holmes
Dr. Natasha Holmes, Cornell University
Abstract: Generative Al is transforming science education by reshaping how we teach, learn, and assess student understanding. While concerns about academic integrity and student writing are front and center, genAl also creates unprecedented opportunities for research. For the first time, education researchers can evaluate open-ended student responses at scale, enabling large, multi-institutional studies that capture the richness of student thinking beyond multiple-choice formats. I will present what I think it means to conduct research on STEM teaching and learning in the age of genAl. We will consider both opportunities and challenges: integrating genAl into classroom practice and responsibly analyzing student work at scale. Instead of trying to fight it, we'll consider how to work with it-harnessing genAl to advance science education research in ways that are both innovative and responsible.

Hugo Rossi Lecture Series: Dr. Victor Lee
Dr. Victor Lee, Stanford University
Abstract: Al is driving schools and disciplines to re-examine not only how they teach, but what they teach so that Al is represented as a topic in and of itself. One way this has been encouraged is through the promotion of Al literacy—a contagious shorthand term for understandings about the uses, mechanisms, and areas of concern we should have as individuals and societally with respect to Al that is less technical than would be expected of a professional software engineer. In this talk, I discuss specific strategies my group has taken with respect to promoting Al literacy with an eye toward STEM disciplines - specifically with examples from projects such as Al Quests and CRAFT (Classroom-Ready Resources about Al for Teaching). A key argument is that we should draw from the prior premises and processes developed in the learning sciences, although when we do focus on moving innovations into practice, there are pragmatic compromises we must still make.

Tanner Humanities talk from One-U RAI faculty fellow C. Thi Nguyen
One-U Responsible Artificial Intelligence Initiative (one-U RAI) faculty fellow C. Thi Nguyen analyzes the effects of games and scoring systems on human values and behavior. In his new book published by Penguin, The Score: How to Stop Playing Somebody Else’s Game, Nguyen shows how different forms of games and play—from video games and sports to cooking or gardening—can enhance human development and meaning. He contrasts this potential with the growing role of metrics and rankings in workplaces, schools, governments, and everyday decision-making. These systems, he argues, can make us outsource our values and interests to external authorities. In developing ideas like value capture and the gamification of modern life, he invites audiences to consider when scores and metrics can be rewarding, or alienating.
Nguyen is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Utah. He is the author of Games: Agency as Art, published by Oxford University Press, and an editor at Aesthetics for Birds.
