A Holiday Plant Gone Rogue: The Spread of English Holly in Pacific Northwest Forests
A Holiday Plant Gone Rogue: The Spread of English Holly in Pacific Northwest Forests
Invasive plants can dramatically reshape forests, and English holly is becoming a growing problem in Pacific Northwest urban woodlands. In this talk, Dr. Santiago Lopez, professor in the University of Washington Bothell’s School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, will share findings from a study in a Seattle-area forest (Saint Edward State Park) that examined where holly spreads and why, using both spatial analysis and species distribution modeling.
He and his students found that holly thrives particularly in evergreen forests and warmer areas — raising concerns that climate change may accelerate its invasion — while soil nutrients appear to play a lesser role.
Understanding these patterns can help land managers better target efforts to protect native biodiversity and the health of urban forest ecosystems. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the talk will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a short Q&A. , Tickets are $5,…

⚛️ Tri-campus STEM Accessibility Convos CoP
Information Technology
The STEM Accessibility Convos community of practice was started in 2025 by Darcy Jenzen (UW Tacoma Digital Learning), Mary-Colleen Jenkins (UW ATS) and Ana Thompson (UW Bothell IT ATC). Initially, it was a few informal conversations with Math, Sciences, Business and other faculty who use equations, formulas, LaTeX, etc. in their teaching. We used their input to create a Community of Practice for anyone at UW to join in Microsoft Teams and have a place for our discussions. We now meet monthly, on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Accessibility Lunch & Learn: What do I do with all these PDFs? Inventorying and Assessing your PDF Backlog
Information Technology
In this guided workshop, you will receive tips and a shared, guided document to help you and your team take the first crucial steps toward creating strategy for dealing with your PDF backlog: inventory and assessment. It's much easier to create a long-term plan for handling the challenges posed by PDFs if you build a deeper awareness of how many you have, how they were created, and the purpose they serve. Inventorying and assessing your existing PDF backlog can also help you make informed choices about appropriate alternatives to PDFs in future workflow decisions. Please note: This is a strategy workshop, so we won't be covering how to remediate PDFs or demonstrating tools.
