Electrical Engineering Research Talk: Moore’s Law Is Dead — Time to Scale Upward

School of STEM For decades, progress in computing has followed Moore’s Law — packing more and more transistors into ever smaller spaces to achieve faster, cheaper, and more efficient chips. But as transistor scaling nears its physical limits, shrinking devices no longer guarantee better performance. Power density, heat, and interconnect delays have become significant barriers, signaling the end of traditional “scaling down.”    The next leap forward is to scale up. Just as cities build skyscrapers when land runs out, chip designers are now stacking transistors vertically through Monolithic Three-Dimensional Integration (M3D-IC). By creating and connecting transistors in the vertical dimension, M3D-ICs dramatically reduce signal delay, lower power consumption, and increase transistor density all within a smaller footprint.    This seminar explores how M3D-IC technology revives the spirit of Moore’s Law, shifting the focus from shrinking in two dimensions to building upward in three. The future of performance scaling is no lo… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Commons Hall (UW2).
