The guest is selected from among several visiting artists students have engaged with during their time in the program. This year’s benedictory speaker will be Nadine Antoinette Maestas. Nadine Antoinette Maestas is a poet’s poet and believes that the empire of the sentence is an extremely oppressive totalitarian regime. Smoke season and Washington wildfires

In a warming world, lots of things are changing. One of those is the occurrence of wildfire smoke. A record-low snowpack across Washington in 2026 (as of February) portends a strong wildfire season coming up. What do you need to know about smoke? What is smoke anyway — and how can you protect against its harmful effects? Dr. Dan Jaffe, a professor in UW Bothell’s School of STEM, has studied smoke for more than 20 years. In this talk, he will discuss recent research to understand why we are getting more smoke than ever, what smoke is composed of, what are its health effects, and how to protect ourselves and keep it out of our homes. Professor Jaffe has taught environmental chemistry and air pollution at UW Bothell for nearly 30 years. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the talk will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a short Q&A. , Tickets are $5, available at the door or online in advance. Learn more on McMenamin's website. ⚛️ Tri-campus STEM Accessibility Convos CoP

Information Technology The STEM Accessibility Convos community of practice was started in 2025 by Darcy Jenzen (UW Tacoma Digital Learning), Mary-Colleen Jenkins (UW ATS) and Ana Thompson (UW Bothell IT ATC). Initially, it was a few informal conversations with Math, Sciences, Business and other faculty who use equations, formulas, LaTeX, etc. in their teaching. We used their input to create a Community of Practice for anyone at UW to join in Microsoft Teams and have a place for our discussions. We now meet monthly, on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Have a great insight or idea to share? Questions, issues or a desire to connect and learn about accessibility? Join us! Event interval: Single day event. Summer Nature Walk Series

Collaborative for Socio-Ecological Engagement Join us for guided forest walks open to everyone—including leashed pets! These walks are co-led by staff from Washington State Parks and the Collaborative for Socio-Ecological Engagement(CoSEE), offering a welcoming, informal way to explore and learn together. Participants will learn about the park’s unique landscapes, ongoing restoration and research efforts, and the many plants and animals that call the forest home. Each walk is designed to encourage curiosity, conversation, and connection with the natural environment, making it enjoyable for all ages and experience levels. Walks take place on the third Saturday of each month throughout the summer. We will do different trails each month and make decisions based on the folks who attend. Most likely the walks will be about 1-2 hours but could extend to the full three based on group needs or interests. Dogs are welcome and must remain on leash for the entire walk. If you have questions or accommodation needs, please contact cosee@uw.edu. We are happy to work… Event interval: Single day event. Location Type: In-person. Accessibility Contact: cosee@uw.edu.
