Seminar in Applied Mathematics: Luis Chacon (Distinguished Theoretical Scientist, Helion)

Title: Modern implicit algorithms for multiscale kinetic plasma simulation for fusion applications Abstract: Plasma systems are notoriously multiscale temporally and spatially, and very difficult to model accurately when collisional processes are subdominant. Such conditions are pervasive, for instance, in thermonuclear fusion plasmas. To simulate such plasma conditions with high fidelity, one must solve the so-called Vlasov-Fokker-Planck (VFP) equations (or suitable approximations thereof), coupled with Maxwell’s equations. The VFP+Maxwell system is a high-dimensional (6D+time), integro-differential, nonlinear, nonlocal set of equations describing multiple plasma species interacting collisionally and via electromagnetic fields. The solution to the VFP system is constrained by positivity and collisional invariants (mass, momentum, and energy), which must be respected by the numerical representation for long-term solution accuracy. Boeing Colloquium: Beatrice Riviere (Rice)

Title: On the Numerical Solution of Mixed-dimensional Coupled PDEs Abstract: Mixed-Dimensional coupled problems are characterized by coupled partial differential equations defined over domains of different dimensions. These problems  occur in several applications ranging from geosciences to biomedicine. Drug delivery from the vasculature to the organ, or solute clearance through the lymphatic vessels are two such examples of processes involving flow and transport in networks of one-dimensional vessels embedded in a three-dimensional domain. This talk presents recent advances for the numerical analysis of mixed-dimensional PDEs with co-dimension equal to two. We formulate and analyze interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods applied to mixed-dimensional coupled flow and transport problems. One challenge is the handling of the Kirchoff conditions at the bifurcation nodes of the network; this is addressed by a generalization of average operators in the DG scheme. What Haven’t We Asked Quantum Computers to Do? Jeff Henshaw Senior VP, Quantum Compute Products at IonQ

When people talk about quantum computing, the focus is usually on a small set of well-known applications. But an equally interesting question is whether we’re asking the right questions in the first place. What kinds of problems might benefit from quantum approaches that we simply haven’t recognized yet? This talk offers a brief introduction to the ideas behind quantum computing and a snapshot of where the field stands today. It then explores a broader challenge: discovering new applications by bringing together people who approach problems from very different perspectives. Researchers in fields ranging from chemistry and biology to public policy, history, literature, and religious studies may see opportunities that physicists and computer scientists overlook. Not every problem will be a good fit for quantum computing. But expanding the conversation beyond the traditional quantum community may be one of the best ways to discover what these technologies will ultimately be useful for.
