Title: The evolution of human-biting in mosquitoes
Abstract: Over the past several millennia, humans have rapidly become the most important force shaping our planet. While many animals and plants are threatened by anthropogenic change, others have adapted, providing textbook examples of behavioral and other types of evolution in action. In extreme cases, some species have even come to specialize on resources newly provided by human populations. For example, a few mosquitoes have evolved to specialize in biting humans, transforming them into dangerous vectors of human disease. I will discuss work from my group on both the ultimate ecological drivers and proximate genetic/neural mechanisms of mosquito adaptation to human hosts and habitats. Where, when, and why did key species evolve special relationships with humans? And what changes in the genomes and brains of these species help them exploit to exploit us so successfully. Link to…

Bite-Sized Science with BirdNote - Sci Com Workshop
The Bioloy Outreach Committee is happy to invite everyone to a workshop on April 15th in LSB 110 hosted in collaboration with BirdNote, a Seattle-founded public radio show dedicated to telling engaging stories illustrating the lives of birds. We're excited to have Nick Bayard, the executive director of BirdNote, and Valentina Alaasam, a member of the BirdNote board of directors and postdoctoral researcher in the Rico-Guevara lab, running this workshop!
During the Wednesday seminar slot from 12:00-1:00pm, learn the secrets of how BirdNote communicates science to its national radio audience in under 2 minutes. Then, from 1:00-2:00pm, you can stay for an optional session to practice applying the same strategies to more effectively translate your science into sound-bites that media producers are excited to share. This is a brown-bag lunch event, and snacks will be provided. If you know you’ll be able to attend, help us plan by RSVPing at the linked form, but you can still attend even if you don’t RSVP!
Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Life Sciences Building (LSB). Campus room: LSB 110. Accessibility Contact: dso@uw.edu. Event Types: Workshops.

Title: Evolutionary rescue during climate extremes
Abstract: Populations declining during extreme climate stress may require adaptive evolution to persist (“evolutionary rescue”). I will present two studies that my lab has conducted on evolutionary rescue during climate extremes. In the first, we combined field demographic monitoring with whole-genome sequencing in scarlet monkeyflower populations during an exceptional multi-year drought event in the western United States. We showed (1) range-wide demographic decline tied to precipitation anomalies, (2) non-random evolution of heat- and drought-associated alleles in some populations, consistent with rapid evolution by natural selection, and (3) demographic recovery in some populations that was predicted by genetic variation in, and evolution of, climate-associated loci. These findings demonstrate evolutionary rescue in the wild, showing that some…

Title: Fitness Consequences of Movement Behavior in Wildlife Populations
Abstract: Movement is an adaptation to dynamic environments. By moving, organisms adjust the conditions to which they are exposed, improve their ability to use resources, and minimize their exposure to risks. There is an inherent theoretical link between individual movement behavior and fitness, with consequences for demography at the population level. However, this theoretical relationship is rarely quantified empirically. In this seminar, I will present three examples of how movement behavior can be linked to its fitness consequences at the individual level, and I will discuss how doing so can help us better predict demographic trajectories of wildlife populations in response to anthropogenic pressures and environmental change.
