Title: Fitness Consequences of Movement Behavior in Wildlife Populations
Abstract: Movement is an adaptation to dynamic environments. By moving, organisms adjust the conditions to which they are exposed, improve their ability to use resources, and minimize their exposure to risks. There is an inherent theoretical link between individual movement behavior and fitness, with consequences for demography at the population level. However, this theoretical relationship is rarely quantified empirically. In this seminar, I will present three examples of how movement behavior can be linked to its fitness consequences at the individual level, and I will discuss how doing so can help us better predict demographic trajectories of wildlife populations in response to anthropogenic pressures and environmental change.

Title: Bitter, Rough, and Salty: A Journey into Mosquito Behaviour and Physiology
Abstract: Mosquitoes are a diverse group of insects with an outsized impact on human health. Our lab is focused on mosquito behaviour and physiology across scales, with a focus on the neurobiology of sensory-driven behaviours and the physiological adaptations that allow larvae to inhabit novel environments. In this seminar I will highlight work on feeding and egg-laying behaviour in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, and recent insights into molecular basis of saline tolerance in the coastal rock pool mosquito Aedes togoi.
We show that Ae. aegypti avoid bitter compounds during both blood- and nectar-feeding and identify a population of sensory neurons expressing AaegGr14 as key mediators of this anti-feedant action. We also demonstrate that Ae. aegypti mosquitoes use surface texture as a positive cue for egg-laying, choosing…

Biology Open House
Please save the date - Saturday, May 16th, 2026 - because we are hosting a day of science and invite you to join us! This event is free of cost, and families and science enthusiasts of all ages are welcome.
The UW Department of Biology is a large, collaborative, and integrative department – meaning our research and teaching spans from cellular and molecular biology to global climate change to paleontology to plant biology. Our department is among the largest undergraduate degree programs at the UW and is a vital STEM pipeline for the state of Washington. Come learn about the exciting things our department is doing from experts in their fields! Our UW Biology Greenhouse will also be open for visitors!
At our open house, you’ll have the opportunity to explore topics such as: How have penguins adapted to survive climate change? , How is neuron fate decided during development? , Why are mosquitoes attracted to us? , Do plants really “defend” themselves against insect predators? , How does the brain really…
