EXHIBITION: Designing, Crafting and Building Community: 30 Years of Practicing a Design / Build Learning Model

At the heart of this program, design / build addresses issues of social justice, green building, ecological and sustainable design and supporting students to explore materials, forms, and responsive design. Employing multimedia, this immersive exhibition is a mosaic illustrating the diversity of projects, community partners, student experiences, and award-winning projects.
The exhibition will be on view March 30–May 1, 2026, and is free and open to the public. Visitors are welcome Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

UDP PC Lecture: When Driving is Not an Option with Author and Advocate Anna Zivarts
Join Anna Letitia Zivarts, author of When Driving is Not an Option, for an evening lecture exploring why the needs of involuntary non-drivers should be central to how we design our transportation systems and communities. When we design with non-drivers in mind, we not only make it easier for everyone to get where they need to go, but also create healthier, more climate-friendly communities. Anna is a low-vision mom, disability advocate, and fellow nondriver. She will shine a light on the realities faced by non-drivers and show how more inclusive transportation systems can improve quality of life for all.
The lecture will be followed by a reception.

Northwest Nature and Health Symposium
The UW Center for Nature and Health illuminates the connections between nature and human health and well-being. We work with community and decision-makers to translate our findings into programs and policies that ensure everyone can benefit from the healing power of nature.
Since 2016, we have been hosting symposia to bring together researchers, community members, and decision-makers to learn about new discoveries, discuss new policies and programs, and advance partnerships in the field of nature and health. We strive to invite speakers who work hand-in-hand to understand the needs of communities who have borne the brunt of social and environmental injustices; who work to address health and access inequities; and who bring critical insights and perspectives on environmental history as well as outdoor recreation.

Stewardship in the context of the Mississippi River is a layered and complicated idea. Human, non-human, cultural, geologic, floodplain, wetland, backwater habitats, and riverine systems depend on relationships and reciprocity to thrive. In the Twin Cities, there is a groundswell of awareness and advocacy that nurtures the critical relationships between these human and environmental systems across policy, design, and community forums. How can future work in the public realm of the Mississippi River honor Indigenous legacy, build resilience and community power, and better understand future vulnerabilities?…
