Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Grand Rounds - Caring for a Spouse with Alzheimer’s disease: A Prototypic Chronic Stressor
Peter Vitaliano, PhD, will discuss his research on chronic stress and its relationships with psychophysiological outcomes. Chronic Stress will be operationalized as caring for a spouse with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A parsimonious Theoretical Model of Stress will be used to guide the research. Professor Vitaliano has directed the UW Stress and Coping Project for the last 48 years. He and colleagues have received funding from the NIH, NIA, NHLBI, NCI and the National Fund for Medical Education. In addition to caregivers, Dr. Vitaliano has researched stressors and their correlates in Medical Students, Air Traffic Controllers and people diagnosed with coronary disease, cancer, schizophrenia, suicide ideation and anger/dyscontrol problems. His student collaborators have gone on to become Deans and Professors at universities around the world.
