English Conversation Practice Hour

The UW LLC English Conversation Practice Hours are currently held during winter quarter once per week. All members of the UW community are encouraged to attend: Undergraduate Students , Graduate Students , Staff , Faculty, Students will practice in small groups, with discussions and practice activities guided by an English speaker. We will do our best to accommodate the diverse interests of the attendees. This is a great opportunity to connect, learn, and grow within our diverse language-learning community. We recognize that although there are reasons to develop English language competencies, the many languages and dialects spoken by our community are of vital importance as well. The goal for these sessions will be to help improve communication skills and comfort when speaking, but not to pressure individuals into adopting a “standard” form of English. All varieties of English are valued! We all ‘make mistakes’ when speaking, including L1 speakers of English. Mistakes are necessary for learning. This is a… Event interval: Single day event. UW / UO Language Educator Summit | Strengthening language learning pathways with area studies

Please join us for our fall quarter UW/UO Summit. The topic will be "Strengthening language learning pathways with area studies". This workshop presents methodologies and techniques for incorporating area and international studies into every post-secondary language classroom. Area studies are often greatly underutilized by educators as a means to foster meaningful student engagement with the target cultures as well as inspire long-term and in-country study which can lead to the development of important career pathways. You will leave the workshop with an understanding of the why’s and practical how to’s for more effectively integrating this linguistic and cultural content into your classrooms.
