MSE Seminar: Xavier Roy

Title: Quantum complexity in simple materials, Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) materials have received widespread attention over the past 20 years due to their remarkable physical, mechanical and chemical properties, and our ability to integrate them into devices. In this seminar, I will discuss a new approach for realizing long-sought electronic structures of geometrically frustrated lattice models (e.g. kagome and pyrochlore), by “decorating” un-frustrated, primitive lattices with a particular set of atomic orbitals. In the process, we identify the vdW intermetallic compound Pd5AlI2 as the first material to realize the electronic structure of the 2D Lieb lattice – featuring Dirac-like bands intersected by a flat band – persisting in ambient conditions down to the monolayer limit. I will discuss how this unique electronic structure gives rise to compact localized states and bound states in continuum (BICs), which could provide a platform for lossless and topologically protected electronic processes. I will… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Mary Gates Hall (MGH). Campus room: 389. Accessibility Contact: Matthew Yankowitz, myank@uw.edu. Event Types: Lectures/Seminars. GWSS Oral History Website Launch Party

Please join us to celebrate the launch of the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Oral History Website, created by Sunaina Butler and Micaela Duran for their iSchool Capstone Project, with guidance from consultant Eileen Jerrett. They will discuss the archival process behind their design and present key features of the website. In the years leading up to the 50th anniversary of GWSS in 2021, faculty members identified the importance of documenting the department's history. Who better to narrate that history than the students and activists, faculty and alumni who have built and sustained GWSS over the decades! With that in mind, we launched GWSS 460: Feminist Oral History Research Methodology, a course which trains students, who as part of their coursework recorded stories of key GWSS figures. The new website provides a platform for exploring this rich and growing archive. The GWSS Oral History project is made possible by generous support from the James Simmons and Karen Rudolf Fund. George H. Cady Endowed Lecture in Inorganic Chemistry: Shannon Stahl

George H. Cady Endowed Lecture in Inorganic Chemistry, "Aerobic Oxidation Catalysis: Optimizing the Potential of O2 for Chemical Synthesis" Professor Shannon Stahl – Department of Chemistry, University of Wisconsin Host: Brandi Cossairt and Douglas Reed Molecular oxygen is the quintessential reagent for the oxidation of organic chemicals, but its reactivity is notoriously difficult to control. Multiple mechanisms are used to achieve O2 activation and selective reactivity in chemistry and biology. Some of the most versatile pathways use a catalyst that couples two redox half-reactions: (1) reduction of O2 to water and (2) oxidation of the organic molecule - a mechanistic sequence that closely resembles the redox half-reactions in fuel cells. This talk will explore homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for aerobic oxidation of organic molecules, emphasizing kinetic and thermodynamic principles commonly encountered in the study of electrocatalysts for redox reactions in fuel cells. For example, many… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Bagley Hall (BAG). Online Meeting Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChT45EErfUqqah_8s62nJuw. Campus room: 154. DXARTS Spring Concert: Celebrating John Chowning

Composer John Chowning is considered one of the pioneers of Computer Music. His contributions to this field, such as the invention of FM Digital Synthesis, had a strong cultural impact in the worlds of both classical and popular music. His invention allowed the production of one of the most popular digital synthesizers, the Yamaha DX7, which sold millions of units in the 1980s and was used by virtually every band from that era. Revenues from the licensing of this technology to Yamaha Corporation allowed Chowning to create the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University, one of the most important Computer Music research centers in the world. Chowning's most important contribution to the world of music, however, can be found in his compositions, all considered masterpieces of Computer Music: Sabelithe (1971), Turenas (1972), Stria (1977), and Phoné (1981). These pieces will be played during the concert over a state-of-the-art ambisonic sound system. BOOK LAUNCH | “To Stand with Palestine: Transnational Resistance and Political Evolution in the United States” by Dr. Karam Dana

This event is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged. Doors expected to open at 4:40pm. In recent years, attitudes in the United States toward the Palestinian cause have shifted dramatically. Although Palestinians have long been demonized in U.S. media and politics, their struggle, often portrayed as illegitimate, is now increasingly supported by emergent progressive voices challenging the status quo on Israel and Palestine. What accounts for this change and its evolution? This book explores how Palestinian identity is strengthened by the absence of a defined home nation and how a coalition rooted in exile continues to resist and advocate for a distant homeland. It examines the social, political, economic, and technological forces that have amplified Palestinian voices globally, particularly in the United States, fostering new forms of activism and solidarity. Dr. Karam Dana is Professor of Middle East Studies and the Alyson McGregor Distinguished Professor of Excellence & Transformative… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Kane Hall (KNE). Public Lecture Series: Strangers Within: The Muslim Question in German Identity and Intellectual History. With Pardis Dabashi (Bryn Mawr) and Mohammed Rafi (UC Irvine)

Dr. Mohammad Rafi (UC Irvine) "Muslims in Germany: A Permanent Threat to German National Identity?" This paper traces how Islam has been construed as a threat to German national identity and its declared values. It explores how Muslims are perceived to be a danger to social order since the arrival of Turkish guest workers in the 1960s, by persistently being depicted as prone to violence without the ability to assimilate to German society. The media in Germany continues to play a crucial role in propagating a misleading narrative that connects Muslims to political Islam, especially after 9/11. The status of (Muslim) Iranians in Germany and the (Im)possibility of integration into a society–hostile to those perceived to be Muslim—puts in question Germany’s stated ideals and its identity Pardis Dabashi (Bryn Mawr College) "On Revelation and the Limits of Critical Argument" In what precise ways do divine revelation and the interpretation of art differ from one another, and in what ways do they converge? MAY 23 - Cooperation Measures in Shipping and Logistics Sectors Between Korea and the U.S.

Recently, the U.S.A. has tried to strengthen its industrial bases and to reshape its international supply chains. These two interrelated policies aim to expand the American employment and to de-risk the Chinese threat. In addition, there have been continuous decarbonization efforts in the global society, including by the U.S. and Korea. Since 2022, the U.S. has led this decarbonization in shipping sectors by deploying about 19 so-called ‘Green Shipping Corridors’ among the 62 global corridors. Furthermore, in December 2024 U.S. Congress proposed the SHIPS for America Act, which aims to rebuild shipbuilding, shipping, and port industries. More recently, USTR is planning a levy on Chinese-built ships which call at U.S. ports. With this background how can the U.S. and Korea cooperate in order to enhance mutual economic benefits in shipping and logistics sectors? BOOK RELEASE | Moscow 93 by UW Slavic Department Professor Jose Alaniz

UW Slavic Department Professor Jose Alaniz presents his latest book, Moscow 93. Dr. Alaniz will be joined to discuss his book by Professor Sasha Senderovich, also of the UW Slavic Department.   About the book: Russia in the 1990s: what better place for 20-something Chicano journalist José Alonzo to make his name? At the opening of a New York-style night club on Red Square, the free libations are flowing, the floor show is raunchy, and all of expat Moscow is wheeling and dealing. But things are never what they seem in this new post-Soviet country striving for freedom, democracy and … whatever — and falling far short. In fact, these party-goers will soon have a life-or-death national crisis blow up in their faces. Recalling the techniques of Hunter S. Thompson and Oscar Zeta Acosta, Moscow 93 is a gonzo autofictional account of the author’s experiences before, during and after the 1993 “October events,” when a violent revolt against President Boris Yeltsin erupts in the capital. GWSS Spring Colloquium: "Homocapitalism in the ‘Gay Capital of Africa’: Interrogating South African Sexual Exceptionalism," Presented by Shelley Pryde

Presenter: Shelley Pryde, PhD student, GWSS Moderator: Reggie Kent, PhD student, English  South Africa enjoys an international reputation as an LGBTQ+ -friendly nation, undergirded by its status as the only African state that has thus far legalized same-sex marriage. While the 1996 constitution provides legal protections to LGBTQ+ South Africans, there remains a disparity between ‘rights on paper’ and lived realities of stigma and violence, which disproportionately affect poor, black, and trans citizens. In light of these contradictions, Shelley Pryde examines South African sexual exceptionalism through the lens of homocapitalism. She traces points of transnational politico-economic interaction to unpack their significance to the post-transition nation-building project: and thereby also, to the fracturing of queer subject formation along race and class lines. Ultimately, she argues that South African sexual exceptionalism is predicated on a colonial and apartheid amnesia that 'blackwashes' homophobia, and… Event interval: Single day event. TALK | The Geopoliticization of Critical Raw Materials: Undermining a Just Global Green Transition by Anni Kangas, Tampere University (Finland)

About the Talk: This public talk is based on Dr. Anni Kangas's ongoing research into the politics and political economies of critical raw material (CRM) extraction and value chains, focusing on the collaboration between the European Union and Central Asia. Kangas's point of departure is the idea of a CRM paradox: while these materials are essential for the green transition, their mining comes with considerable ecological and social costs, the brunt of which is borne by mining communities, while most of the benefits accumulate at the end of the value chains in the Global North. This emphasizes the importance of steering the green transition to a more just and sustainable direction globally. However, with the current geopoliticization of critical raw materials, achieving this is increasingly difficult. About the Speaker: Dr. Anni Kangas is a University Lecturer in International Relations at Tampere University. She has a versatile research profile that includes Finnish-Russian relations, Finnish foreign and… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Thomson Hall (THO). Campus room: 317. Please join us for a book talk with Joseph Torigian, Research Fellow, Hoover Institution and Associate Professor, School of International Service at American University. The Party's Interests Come First: The Life of Xi Zhongxun, Father of Xi Jinping   Friday, May 30, 2025 1:00-2:30 PM TEAL Seminar Room M232, Gowen Hall China's leader, Xi Jinping, is one of the most powerful individuals in the world―and one of the least understood. Much can be learned, however, about both Xi Jinping and the nature of the party he leads from the memory and legacy of his father, the revolutionary Xi Zhongxun (1913–2002). The elder Xi served the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for more than seven decades. He worked at the right hand of prominent leaders Zhou Enlai and Hu Yaobang. He helped build the Communist base area that saved Mao Zedong in 1935, and he initiated the Special Economic Zones that launched China into the reform era after Mao's death. Political Life of Development Models in India

This lecture serves as the keynote presentation of the spring 2025 South Asia Center Graduate Student Workshop Competing development models in India necessitate a critical engagement that moves beyond the realm of comparative statistical indicators. Such an analysis must consider development not merely as a set of policy outcomes, but as a political discourse embedded within the structures of India’s electoral democracy. Development, in this sense, emerges as a contested terrain—infused with ideological, cultural, and socio-political significance. At the heart of these divergent narratives lies their role as sub-nationalist frameworks that construct region-specific claims to progress and modernity, often invoking a sense of exceptionalism. This lecture aims to unpack the discursive and performative aspects of these models, paying close attention to how they blur the boundaries between political rhetoric and knowledge production. In doing so, it examines how this development apparatus functions as an ‘anti-po… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Thomson Hall (THO). Campus room: 317. Lecture | Militant Mothers of Kurdistan: Mothering the Dead and Care Beyond Life

This event is free and open to the public. This talk discusses the unconventional forms of care that emerge out of Kurdish resistance in Turkey, where mothering becomes a powerful response against necropolitical state violence. By centering the stories of two Kurdish mothers who had to care for their dead children and mother beyond life under the violent state of emergency regime declared in 2015; the talk examines the ways in which Kurdish mothers “rescue the dead” (Antoon, 2021) from the necropolitical state and create their own necropolitical power through a radical embrace of death and decoupling of mothering from the corporeal link between the mother and the child. It is a critical intervention into conventional humanitarian care frameworks that prioritize human survival and calls for a re-imagination of humanitarianism as something that extends to the non-human and the dead and for the discovery of sites where humanitarian care is not passively received but is politically reconstructed as a site of… Event interval: Single day event. Allen School Colloquium: Shaping AI for the Public Good via the Berkeley Lab Model

ABSTRACT: This three-part talk summarizes the underlying philosophy and best practices of the Berkeley lab model, offers a perspective on improving AI’s impact, and describes a new research funding opportunity starting this Fall. Senior computer scientists and rising stars in AI developed a balanced perspective on AI's societal impact informed by interviews with 24 experts including John Jumper, Barack Obama, Susan Rice, and Eric Schmidt (see www.ShapingAI.com). We believe we are in the early days of practical AI, and focused efforts by practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders can still increase AI's upsides and reduce its downsides. We suggest guidelines for enhancing AI development: i) Human-AI collaboration exceeds capabilities of either AI or people; ii) Focus on productivity improvements that generate more jobs; iii) Initially prioritize eliminating tedious tasks; and iv) Consider that AI impact varies by geography. Rather than simply predict long-term AI impact, we've identified research… Event interval: Single day event. Campus room: Amazon Auditorium | Room G20 (CSE2).
