Everybody

At “God’s” command, “Death” summons “Everybody” to go on the long and difficult journey to give a presentation to “God” on Everybody’s life and why they have lived it the way that they have. Everybody wants to bring along a friend, and Death says it’s fine if Everybody can find someone to volunteer. Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Branden Jacob Jenkins based the play on the 15th century morality play, Everyman. Professor Chi-wang Yang directs this production in which each night the performers’ roles will be determined by a lottery to determine which role will be played by which performer. Everybody reveals to us the value of our relationships and how to live with intention amid uncertainty. Weston T. and Sheila Borden Endowed Lecture in Theoretical Chemistry: Prof. Benedetta Mennucci

Weston T. and Sheila Borden Endowed Lecture in Theoretical Chemistry "Photoactivated biological functions: Bridging Electronic Excitations to Functional Response through Multiscale Simulations" Professor Benedetta Mennucci  - Department of Chemistry, University of Pisa Host: Xiaosong Li Living organisms across all domains of life rely on specialized light-sensitive proteins to detect and respond to light. Although these systems adopt diverse molecular strategies, they share a common triggering event: the electronic excitation of a chromophoric unit embedded within the protein. This initial excitation is subsequently converted into different forms of energy and propagated through the system, ultimately leading to a biological response. The underlying processes span multiple spatial and temporal scales, ranging from ultrafast electronic dynamics localized on the chromophoric unit to much slower, large-scale conformational changes of the protein matrix. Here, a multiscale computational framework is presented t… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Electrical and Computer Engineering Building (ECE). Campus room: ECE 125. Organic Chemistry Seminar: Prof. Bo Li

"New Chemistry from Microbial Genomes" Professor Bo Li  - Department of Chemistry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Host: Lauren Rajakovich Drugs with origins in microbial small molecules increased both average human life span and quality of life. Microbial genomes harbor many gene clusters dedicated to the biosynthesis of bioactive small molecules; most of these clusters remain uncharacterized. My research group discovers new chemistry from bacterial genomes. We study cryptic biosynthetic gene clusters and identify bioactive small molecules. For example, we identified several antimicrobial and cytotoxic small molecules produced by the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Defining the biosynthetic pathway of these molecules yielded new enzymes for biocatalysis and synthetic biology. Our work also revealed previously unknown bacterial molecules that affect the health of human hosts. Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Chemistry Building (CHB). Campus room: CHB 102. SHACS: Derek Houston, PhD - Input and Parent-Child Interaction Factors in the Development of Spoken Language in Children who are Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing

Most research on spoken language development in children who are deaf/hard-of-hearing has, understandably, focused on auditory access and speech perception. However, speech perception accounts for less than 25% of variance in language outcomes. Like typically hearing children, language outcome of children who are deaf/hard-of-hearing depends on their ability to make meaning of the auditory input they receive during social interactions with caregivers. Four years ago, I proposed a conceptual framework that asserted that variability in outcomes depended on the total language input that is accessible, attended to, and coordinated with children’s attention during social interactions (Houston, 2022). In this talk, I will use this framework to organize findings from my lab and others toward a growing but far-from-complete understanding of how many input and parent-child interaction factors contribute to variability in language outcomes in children who are deaf/hard-of-hearing.   Derek M. Sea Change Within Us: Presented by Karin Stevens Dance

Sea Change Within Us, a recreated 2019 project by Karin Stevens Dance, is a sixty-minute performance that addresses local Washington state water issues and the consequences of climate change, using the voices of real people we interviewed, combined with moving rigid structures of water images by dancing human bodies. Eight dancers move four large panels into dynamic configurations to explore themes such as rivers and dams, endangered wild Pacific salmon and Southern Resident Orca, melting ice, sea-level rise, flooding, migration, injustices to Indigenous fishing rights, divisive politics, and the complexities of human dis/re/connection. Amid these turbulent thematic layers, grief is embodied in the “Rivers, Dams, Salmon, Orca” section through the actual cries of mother orca Tahlequah. A call to collective awareness emerges in the section “Descending Pressure,” echoing the repeated phrase of a climate activist-artist: “Our bodies are a source of wisdom.” Learn more about the program here: https://www.karinst… Event interval: Single day event. Kade Lecture: Ansgar Mohnkern (U. Amsterdam): "The Cult of Tradition: German Soccer and the Rise of the New Right"

No other sport in contemporary European culture carries more symbolic value than soccer. This has to do with themes that reach far beyond the question of winning or losing alone. The game triggers matters of politics, of identity, of class, of gender, and of history – and, with its hegemonic cultural position, it can in many ways be understood as a seismograph for the shifts happening in contemporary societies. In this context, the current conjuncture of a certain cult of tradition around the game is of particular interest. This cult, most prominently practiced by so-called ‘ultras’ a group of loyal and well-organized fans, is, for example, elaborately expressed in a series of spectacular fan choreographies in the stadiums around the games. The cult is particularly celebrated around clubs with a long history of successes which, more often than not, are a matter of the past. With a focus on German fan culture, this talk traces the historical dynamics of this cult of tradition and asks what it has to do with –… Event interval: Single day event. MAXIMIZING SNOW STORAGE THROUGH FIRE-RESILIENT FOREST TREATMENTS: An example of climate adaptive management from the Eastern Cascades, WA, USA

In degraded landscapes, supporting climate adaptation for aquatic species and their habitats will require deploying diverse management actions in order to reduce the amplification effects of climate change.  In the upper watersheds of the Eastern Cascade Mountains, wildfire suppression has increased forest density, drought susceptibility, and high severity burns. The area’s rivers are also drought vulnerable, with 75% of surface flow dependent upon snowpack. We asked whether forest thinning techniques designed to support wildfire resilience also confer hydrologic resilience through forest-snow processes, and implemented a gradient of forest thinning treatments across which we tracked snowpack response. In thinning treatments, we observed a 30% increase in snowpack storage on north-facing slopes, and a 16% increase in snowpack storage on south-facing slopes, thus indicating that wildfire treatments also support hydrologic processes. Part of the Climate Impacts Group "Our Climate Future" webinar series.  Feat… Event interval: Single day event. Accessibility Contact: cig@uw.edu. Event Types: Lectures/Seminars.
