Financial aid slots available on a first-come, first-served basis, REGISTER ONLINERecent data assembled by National Audubon Society and Cornel Lab or Ornithology has given us valuable insights about what we need to do to preserve nature, especially in light of global climate change - and you can help! We know now that in order to sustain bird species, we need to keep a focus on the pristine wild places of the world that are crucial breeding birds. But we have learned that it is just as important to focus on the common birds that are so familiar to us. Almost all the birds we take for granted - the robins, jays, chickadees, sparrows, and finches, among other - are in severe decline all across the continent. This knowledge has prompted a new effort to keep common birds common. The good news is: now, more than ever before in our history - your backyard can make a valuable contribution to the survival of the birds we love. Come hear master birder Connie Sidles tell you…

Gardening with the Seasons: Spring (online)
Cost: $25
Financial aid slots available on a first-come, first-served basis

As spring approaches and things start moving fast in the garden, it can be hard to keep up or decide what to do first. With a focus on seasonal growth patterns, and best tools and techniques, this session will help home gardeners determine what tasks will have the most effect for the progress over the next months. Key topics will include planting, seasonal care for shrubs, vines, and perennial plants, lawn care, mulching and preparing for summer irrigation.
About this series:
Plants and gardens don't live by the written calendar, but by the seasonal cycles and cues of changes in daylight, temperature, and moisture. Forest Bathing (in-person)
Cost: $25
Advance registration required.
Join UW Botanic Gardens and Cascadia Forest Therapy for a unique forest bathing opportunity in the Washington Park Arboretum. Forest bathing (or shinrin-yoku) has been popular in Japan for decades and is gaining momentum in the US. The practice encourages you to move in nature at a slower pace and take in the atmosphere around you. Multiple scientific studies have shown that the practice lowers stress and blood pressure levels, while increasing immune system functioning, making you more resilient to diseases and illness.
During this class the guide, in partnership with the forest, will offer an evolving series of invitations crafted to help participants slow down and open their senses. The opening of one’s senses encourages mindfulness, which readies the heart and mind to be fully present in the natural world. Come discover the medicine of being in the forest.
Accessibility: These sessions are slow-paced and generally cover less than a mile of trail. Trails are not…

In partnership with the Taiwanese Association of Greater Seattle and Seed Kite Foundation, the UW Taiwan Studies Arts & Culture Program welcomes you to our 228 Memorial Screening & Director Q&A: In Search of a Mixed Identity with Co-directors Ming-zheng HUANG & Chen-Hui LIEN!
About the Film
In Taiwan, at the heart of Tainan City, there is a park and a road named after Thng Tek-chiong, though most local citizens don't know who he is.
Thng Tek-chiong was born in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. His father, a Japanese policeman, died when Thng was eight during an armed confrontation between the locals and the authorities. Following in his father's footsteps, he joined the police force before becoming a lawyer. After World War II, he forgot the lesson taught by his father’s history and died in the February 28 incident, a conflict that erupted amid the transition of political power in Taiwan. As a half-Taiwanese, half-Japanese man, Thng witnessed the injustices of colonization and spent his life…

2025 Ecological Restoration Symposium: Local Scales for Global Impacts
Considering the climate crisis precipice upon which we stand, our ecological restoration efforts aim to have watershed, and even global impacts. Fortunately, we can accomplish this grand effort by working to restore one small area at a time. This year’s symposium (an in-person and virtual hybrid event) will focus on local-scale restoration work that aims to ultimately have regional and global impacts. Ecological restoration of small scale or scope need not be limited in consequences and can reach well beyond its borders. Speakers at this year’s symposium will focus on both the challenges and importance of restoring small sites, from how we can target efforts by effectively choosing sites to have broader impacts on the ecosystem or the nearby community, to how we can connect many restoration sites and measure the collective benefits of work done by many diverse people and organizations.

Institutes for Advanced Studies (IASs) are now expanding across the globe. First pioneered in Princeton in the 1930s, IASs can now be found in almost every corner of the globe. But what IS and IAS and what SHOULD it be? Using the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS) in Finland as case study, this talk will examine such issues in the contemporary context. Research Gala Keynote Speaker: Carol Paty (University or Oregon) "Ascent to Europa: A Journey to Jupiter's Ocean Moon"
Abstract: Beginning with Galileo Galilei in 1610, the Jovian system of worlds has inspired us and provided a rich environment for paradigm change and discovery. Nearly 415 years from Galileo's discovery of the Jovian moons, we are poised to explore mysteries of Europa.
NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft launched in October 2024, with the goal of exploring Jupiter's moon Europa to understand its habitability. This robotic explorer will enter Jupiter orbit in April 2030, and, beginning March 2031, it will collect science data while flying past Europa 49 times. The mission will investigate Europa's habitability by studying its interior, composition, and geology, and will search for and characterize any current geologic activity including possible plumes. In this lecture, I'll discuss the mission's science objectives and how they will be addressed using an advanced suite of complementary remote sensing and in-situ instruments onboard Europa Clipper. From the short wavelengths of the ultraviolet to long wavelengths…

Psychology Social & Personality Edwards Seminar with PJ Henry, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology, NYU Abu Dhabi
Who’s Afraid of Femininity? Valuing the Feminine in Psychological Science, PJ Henry, Associate Professor of Psychology, New York University Abu Dhabi
Two general, competing approaches to addressing gender inequality have emerged since the 19th century. One is based on the assumption that there are few differences between women and men, and that women should therefore be treated equally to men (called “equality feminism”); the other is based on the assumption that there are differences between women and men, and that organizations and governments should value more what women have to offer (called “difference feminism”). The dominant approach today, both in psychology and popular culture, is to embrace equality feminism and to reject difference feminism due to its putative essentialization of devalued traits in women. In this talk, I propose this dominant approach may be misguided and predicated on unhelpful ways of thinking about gender. Difference feminism can be reframed as a useful approach that does not…

Legalizing China: The Authoritarian Functions of Law | Taisu Zhang, Yale Law School
In the early 21st Century, China has taken enormous and irreversible steps towards becoming a law-oriented polity. Especially since 2012, the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has made—and continues to make—major investments in “governing the country according to law.” At the same time, the Party-state’s sociopolitical dominance has only deepened. Whereas earlier generations of Chinese lawyers often believed that legalization would inevitably lead to some sociopolitical liberalization, those assumptions now seem fundamentally misguided: China has indeed become more legalistic, but it has also become more authoritarian. This book project attempts to unpack the deeper structural logic behind this authoritarian turn toward law. It operates at three different levels: political, cultural-ideological, and sociological. Combined, these forces not only compel governmental and private actors alike to rely much more strongly on legality for organization, regulation, and legitimation, but also render that…

'Borders of Identities: Second Generation, Multiculturalism, and Geopolitics in Taiwan' with Lan Pei-Chia, National Taiwan University with Lan Pei-Chia, National Taiwan University
The influx of marriage migrants and their children of mixed heritages has transformed the ethnic landscape and multicultural policies in East Asia. In Taiwan, the evolving policy regime—what I term “geopolitical multiculturalism”—has linked Southeast Asian immigrants and their children to geopolitical interests and multicultural recognition, while PRC immigrants and their children are entangled in the rising geopolitical tensions across the Taiwan Strait and the contestation of national identity. Drawing on in-depth interviews with sixty adult children from cross-border marriages in Taiwan, Lan's research examines how the second generation—a diverse group with intersecting social differences—manage their identities to access multicultural dividends and circumvent geopolitical stigma. She identifies four major strategies of identity work: majority identity, biculturalism, rescaling, and differentiation.
