HLS26 | Interrogating Loyalty: Japanese Americans and World War II
In 1942, the US government incarcerated more than 120,000 Japanese Americans in concentration camps, based on the racist argument that they were likely “disloyal” to the United States. In the ensuing years of World War II, the US government simultaneously sought to demonstrate the “loyalty” of Japanese Americans to American democracy. By placing US wartime policies and Japanese American responses in different historical contexts, this lecture will interrogate the meanings of loyalty, democracy, and national security—during World War II and in our own time.

SHACS: Emily Knight, MD, PhD - Visuospatial attentional influences on multi-talker speech recognition in autism and ADHD
Many children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), experience difficulty understanding speech in multi-talker environments, with downstream consequences for learning and social participation. Effective speech perception in noisy environments depends upon interactions between auditory and visual perception and top-down cognitive processes. We present findings from a virtual reality (VR)–EEG study of children with ADHD or ASD compared to neurotypical development, demonstrating reduced audiovisual speech benefits and atypical allocation of visuospatial attention to target speakers, indexed by steady-state visual evoked potentials. Second, we describe the design and exploratory evaluation of a VR-based training game aimed at supporting attention and audiovisual integration, balancing mechanistic fidelity with child-centered engagement. Together, these studies motivate a theoretical framework in which disrupted selective…

We live in a time of rapid change. Emerging technologies like AI, shifts in global markets, and evolving workplace norms can make the future feel uncertain. At the same time, personal milestones - like moving to a new city, starting a family, or pursuing further education - often intersect with professional transitions such as changing roles, adapting to hybrid work, or navigating organizational restructuring. These changes often don’t happen in isolation. They influence and amplify one another. Yet, the way we approach them isn’t all that different. Join us for…

Greenland is an autonomous and self-governing territory of the Kingdom of Denmark which is a NATO ally and member of the European Union. Ninety percent of Greenland’s citizens are Inuit, and they are also citizens of Denmark. Under the second Trump administration the United States has aggressively sought to acquire Greenland with President Trump threatening the use of force against a NATO ally and an Indigenous population. Denmark has said it will invoke NATO’s Article 5 provisions and the European Union’s 42.7 mutual assistance clause if attacked, which would lead to a rupture in the trans-Atlantic alliance, and Greenlanders are actively discussing EU membership. American threats to Greenland's sovereignty have provoked a crisis for Greenlanders, for the transatlantic NATO alliance, and the European Union, and from Inuit organizations internationally while changes in the Arctic environment due to climate change are also impact…

Fundamentals For Startups: When You Don’t Need a Perfect (Startup) Idea- You Need Empathy
Please register for this event on our Luma calendar.
Lecture:
Most ideas don’t fail because they lack funding, or ambition. They fail because they are built on assumptions about people.
Human-Centered Design (HCD) is a research-backed method that reduces risk early by shifting focus from finding the right solution to asking better questions. It uses empathy to learn directly from the people you aim to serve, instead of guessing stakeholder needs.
This 60-minute lecture introduces Human-Centered Design as a practical tool for moving ideas forward with clarity, whether you are launching a startup, translating research into impact, or shaping a new program inside an organization. Empathy is no longer a “soft skill". It is your strategic team-member.
The lecture is intentionally designed for a mixed audience: founders and early startup teams , researchers and scientists exploring real-world application , students, public and first-time idea-makers , employees developing new initiatives within…

Forest Bathing (in-person)

Join UW Botanic Gardens and Cascadia Forest Therapy for a unique forest bathing opportunity in the Washington Park Arboretum. Forest bathing (or shinrin-yoku) has been popular in Japan for decades and is gaining momentum in the US. The practice encourages you to move in nature at a slower pace and take in the atmosphere around you. Multiple scientific studies have shown that the practice lowers stress and blood pressure levels, while increasing immune system functioning, making you more resilient to diseases and illness.
During this class the guide, in partnership with the forest, will offer an evolving series of invitations crafted to help participants slow down and open their senses. The opening of one’s senses encourages mindfulness, which readies the heart and mind to be fully present in the natural world. Come discover the medicine of being in the forest.

[Exhibit] Seeing Beyond the Island: A Lens into the 228 Sites
The 228 Incident is often reduced to a single confrontation over illicit cigarette sales on the night of February 27, 1947, but the violence was rooted in long-standing political and social injustices that had already surfaced in earlier incidents under postwar administration. On February 28, soldiers opened fire on civilians, rapidly turning local unrest into island-wide resistance, followed by widespread arrests, executions, and military operations carried out under the name of “pacification.” Reinforcements arriving on March 8 intensified indiscriminate killings and ushered in a prolonged climate of terror. The violence left behind not only countless victims, but also a dispersed landscape of ordinary streets, buildings, and public spaces across Taiwan—sites that, whether preserved, transformed, or erased, continue to bear the traces of persecution and memory.
Building on this landscape of lived and remembered sites, Seeing Beyond the Island: A Lens into the 228 Sites brings together historical locations…

Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters + post-screening discussion with Bill T. Jones and berette s macaulay
Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters is a feature documentary that traces the remarkable history and legacy of one of the most important works of art to come out of the age of AIDS –choreographer Bill T. Jones’s tour de force ballet “D-Man in the Waters.” In 1989, D-Man in the Waters gave physical manifestation to the fear, anger, grief, and hope for salvation that the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company felt as they were embattled by the AIDS pandemic. As a group of young dancers reconstructs the dance, they learn about this oft forgotten history and deepen their understanding of the power of art in a time of plague.

Sacred Breath: Indigenous Writing and Storytelling Series
The Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Washington hosts an annual literary and storytelling series. Sacred Breath features Indigenous writers and storytellers sharing their craft at the beautiful wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ Intellectual House on the UW Seattle campus. Storytelling offers a spiritual connection, a sharing of sacred breath. Literature, similarly, preserves human experience and ideals. Both forms are durable and transmit power that teaches us how to live. Both storytelling and reading aloud can impact audiences through the power of presence, allowing for the experience of the transfer of sacred breath as audiences are immersed in the experience of being inside stories and works of literature.
Free and open to the public. Doors open at 4:30pm with light refreshments. Books available for purchase with author signing after the event. RSVP appreciated.

Mindlin Public Lecture: Chris Glein (Southwest Research Institute) "Seafaring in Space: A Personal Voyage to Enceladus"
Please join us for a reception in JHN 141 at 5:30 pm for free pizza and drinks!
Keywords: Planetary science, astrobiology, geochemistry, oceanography, glaciology
Abstract: We look for life to better understand our place in the universe, to satisfy a yearning for the unknown, and to leave a legacy of embracing the biggest questions. Many worlds beckon us in the search for life. They include Mars, icy moons like Europa, and countless exoplanets. All are worthy of continued exploration. Today, I wish to share the story of a small moon of Saturn. Enceladus had flown under the radar until recently. It was indeed unknown for most of human history and essentially a dot until the Space Age. A fleeting flyby by Voyager 2 revealed an enigmatic surface, with regions that appeared to be unusually young. Some even suggested cryovolcanism. Through a time of austerity, NASA and ESA developed the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn. This was our first great expedition to the outer solar system of the 21st century. Cassini…

HLS26 | The Washington Prison History Project: Counter-Archives and Local Histories | Dan Berger
Prison is more than a place of punishment. It is also an archive. Yet the official story found in sentencing reports and conduct reviews is only part of the story. Incarcerated people generate a parallel counter-archive of resistance and transformation. The Washington Prison History Project is a multimedia digital effort to document this counter-archive at a local level. Across a series of publications, programs, and protests, incarcerated people have shown prison to be a central feature in the development of Washington and the country. An examination of this archive tells a different history of our state—and its possible futures.

Marie Huber | Postcolonial Skies: How African airlines shaped global mobilities
At the Jackson School, opportunities and events are open to all eligible persons regardless of race, sex or other identity.
The ability to move around the world by plane is one we take for granted today. Yet, most of the world's population has never set foot on a plane. The tension between opportunity and constraint sits at the very core of the history of civil aviation: opening up the world for some, but barring or downgrading many from full connection. The book project "The Problem of Flying" takes on the history of mass air travel from one of its margins and explores how, after decolonisation, African airlines managed (or failed to) to break into a global market that was not designed for them to begin with. Based on several years of archival research in European, African and US-American archives, as well as a wide range of grey literature and published sources (trade journals, newspapers, memoirs etc.), I argue that my findings do not only fill gaps on Africa in aviation history and gaps on aviation in Af…

Organic Chemistry Seminar: Prof. Eleftheria Roumeli
"Advances in Sustainable Materials Using Biomatter: From Strong and Stiff Plastics to Tunable Soft Hydrogels."
Associate Professor Eleftheria Roumeli - Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Washington
Host: Alshakim Nelson
The development of sustainable materials from biological matter (biomatter) offers a transformative pathway to address global environmental challenges while enabling innovation in sectors such as biomedicine, packaging, and structural materials. This talk presents recent advances in biomatter-based materials, focusing on bacterial cellulose–based multicomponent hydrogels and fully biobased thermoplastic solids derived from raw algal biomass.
In the soft materials regime, we engineer structurally tunable hydrogel networks by synergistically combining bacterial cellulose with agar and xanthan gum. By systematically varying component ratios and crosslinking conditions, we probe how hydrogen bonding, ionic interactions, and phase continuity control network mechanics,…

Public Lecture: Seeing Like a Merchant – Jews and Greeks from Ottoman to Greek Rule
Join us for a talk with Paris Papamichos Chronakis on his new book The Business of Transition – Jewish and Greek Merchants of Salonica from Ottoman to Greek Rule.
This event is co-sponsored by UW's Hellenic Studies Program.
How did the cosmopolitan bourgeoisie of the Eastern Mediterranean navigate the transition from empire to nation-state in the early twentieth century? In this talk, Paris Papamichos Chronakis shows how the Jewish and Greek merchants of Salonica (present-day Thessaloniki) skillfully managed the tumultuous shift from Ottoman to Greek rule amidst rising ethnic tensions and heightened class conflict. Bringing their once powerful voices back into the historical narrative, he traces their entangled trajectories as businessmen, community members, and civic leaders to illustrate how the self-reinvention of a Jewish-led bourgeoisie made a city Greek. Salonica’s merchants were present in their own—and their city’s—remaking.

In this talk, Rachael Z. DeLue will share insights from her current research and teaching on the relationship between art and science in nineteenth-century Europe and North America, focusing on a suite of extraordinary chromolithographs created in the 1880s by the astronomer and illustrator Étienne-Leopold Trouvelot. Based on his work at the Harvard Observatory and the United States Naval Observatory, the chromolithographs represent the cross-pollination of art and science in an attempt to generate knowledge about astronomical phenomena that eluded perception and resisted visualization. Prof. DeLue will consider Trouvelot’s prints in relation to other such attempts on the part of fine artists and scientific illustrators to picture the celest…

Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company - Still/Here
Thirty years after its historic premiere, the groundbreaking dance theater work by Bill T. Jones returns to the stage. Created during the AIDS epidemic, Still/Here shatters boundaries between the personal and the political, exemplifying a form of dance theater that is uniquely American. The participants are the essence of the piece: their gestures inform the choreography, their words the lyrics, their images the stage; they will always be Still/Here, and this work exists to honor their strength.

Course Accessibility Lunch & Learn - Building Space Together: Deaf Students and Hearing Allies in Academia
In academia, Deaf students are often expected to adapt to communication norms and environments designed around hearing people, which creates barriers that are treated as individual problems rather than structural ones. In this talk, Miya (hearing) and Sev (Deaf) reflect on what it means to build space together across differences: recognizing that Deaf students bring values, knowledge, and ways of learning that matter, listening instead of assuming, and treating obstacles as places where support and shared responsibility are needed. Over time, allyship becomes less about “helping” and more about mutual learning and co-creating better classrooms, research groups, and collaborations. Because no one succeeds in isolation, every role matters in building academic space: classmates, instructors, mentors, and coworkers.

Op-Eds for Academics | IN-PERSON Workshop
Op-eds for Academics (In-PERSON) is a hands-on workshop hosted by Society + Technology at UW and the Center for an Informed Public designed to help you translate your research into compelling public commentary. Academic research is deeply relevant to pressing issues of our times, but it can be challenging to know how to reach audiences beyond the academy.
This workshop helps you build practical skills for bringing your expertise to a wider audience by focusing on the ins and outs of op-ed writing. We’ll kick off with a brief panel discussion from members of the UW community who have written op-eds, then we’ll discuss how you can do the same -- from identifying a timely hook, crafting a persuasive short piece, and navigating the submissions process. Come prepared to hear from colleagues, use resources, and participate in interactive exercises. The ambitious may leave with a draft op-ed and a concrete plan for submitting it. Everyone will gain a clearer understanding about how to write for new audiences.

UW Global Community Conversations
A monthly gathering for faculty who are engaged or interested in global work, UW Global is pleased to invite faculty from across the University of Washington who are engaged in or curious about global work to join a new monthly gathering: UW Global Community Conversations, This is not a lecture series. It is a welcoming and conversational space to meet colleagues, share food and drink, and connect around the many ways global perspectives show up in our teaching, research, and engagement. Whether your work involves international research, global learning, study abroad, visiting scholars, or exploring global issues locally, this is a place to get to know one another, exchange ideas, and build community. Each month, we’ll feature a brief, informal spotlight such as a faculty project, a new global initiative, or an international guest on campus to spark conversation. The heart of the gathering, however, is the conversation itself: time to talk, listen, make connections, and learn what others across campus are…

Op-Eds for Academics | ONLINE Workshop
Op-eds for Academics (ONLINE) is a hands-on workshop hosted by Society + Technology at UW and the Center for an Informed Public designed to help you translate your research into compelling public commentary.

SHACS: Kelly C. Harris, PhD - Inhibition, Insulation, and Speech: the Role of GABA and Myelin in Auditory Plasticity
As the aging population grows, differences in speech perception among older adults cannot be explained by peripheral hearing loss alone. Central auditory changes play a critical role and may represent potential therapeutic targets. Integrating electrophysiologic, neuroimaging, and behavioral findings, I will discuss plasticity in the auditory system that emerges with aging and is modulated by peripheral deficits. Emphasis is placed on two key regulators of plasticity: inhibitory neurotransmission (GABA) and white matter microstructure (myelin). Age-related changes in GABA and myelin are shown to influence cortical timing, network integration, and cross-modal reorganization, with direct consequences for speech perception. Together, these findings highlight central neurochemical and structural factors that contribute to variability in auditory performance with age and underscore the importance of brain-based mechanisms in supporting speech perception in older listeners.
