Climate Justice town hall with WA Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen

Now, we're bringing those stories to key politicians and putting them in the hot seat. Join us for a community assembly with WA Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen, who represents UW's district and will play a key role in determining if this critical project becomes a reality. Few people in Washington have more influence over how state funds are spent! If we want to win big and unlock this key piece of our clean energy future, we need to flex our movement muscle. Psychology Social & Personality Edwards Seminar with Jin X. Goh, Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago

Racial Contrast, Jin X. Goh, Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago   At the center of the SFFA v. Harvard Supreme Court case, the plaintiffs argued that Asian Americans were discriminated against in favor of unqualified Black applicants. This echoes a pattern of historical tensions between the Asian and Black communities. Why do Black and Asian Americans seem more at odds with each other than any other racial minority groups? This talk seeks to unravel the frayed relations between Asian and Black Americans by introducing a new theoretical framework called Racial Contrast Theory. I theorize that Asian Americans are contrasted against Black Americans through stereotypes and narratives. In essence, the creation of the Asian model minority myth serves as a direct contrast to Black stereotypes. The racial contrast between Asian and Black Americans ultimately maintains White supremacy and perpetuates anti-Blackness. Racial contrast theory offers a novel (re-)interpretation of extant social… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Kincaid Hall (KIN). Campus room: 102/108. Free Public Lecture: Saving a Species, The Endangered Seastar

Since 2013, more than 5 billion sea stars have perished from “sea star wasting,” a mysterious disease that has devastated the iconic sunflower sea star and triggered cascading ecosystem impacts. With sunflower stars gone, purple sea urchins—unchecked grazers of kelp—exploded in number, leading to 90% declines in kelp forests, a critical temperate-zone habitat. At the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Labs, Dr. Drew Harvell’s team has led groundbreaking research to uncover the cause of sea star wasting, work highlighted in The New York Times, while Dr. Jason Hodin’s team has successfully reared hundreds of sunflower stars in captivity, efforts featured on NBC’s Wild Kingdom. Together, they raise vital questions: what resources and talent are needed to sustain such research, what is the cost to our marine ecosystems if it falters, and what happens when funding is cut or international collaboration is blocked? Presented by UW Friday Harbor Labs The University of Washington is committed to providing… Friday, October 3, 2025, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Brickworks, 150 Nichols Street, Friday Harbor, 98250. Analytical and Organic Chemistry Seminar: Prof. Rebecca Whelan

"Using bioanalytical chemistry to improve clinical outcomes of ovarian cancer." Associate Professor Rebecca Whelan - Department of Chemistry, University of Kansas Host: Daniel Chiu Most cases of ovarian cancer are not caught until the cancer has spread beyond the ovary. For patients receiving a diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer, the survival prospects are grim: about 30% of patients survive five years after a diagnosis of metastatic ovarian cancer. If diagnosed in Stage I, however, ovarian cancer responds well to existing treatments, and the five-year survival rate exceeds 90%. This difference in survivorship with stage at diagnosis motivates ongoing work in the Whelan lab. We are bioanalytical chemists who use a diverse toolkit to confront the challenge of how to better understand and detect ovarian-cancer-specific proteins. In one line of investigation, we have optimized a rapid and low-cost method to isolate an ovarian cancer biomarker protein called CA125 from biofluids from patients; this isolation… Event interval: Single day event. Psychology Edwards Lecture with Professor Colin Wayne Leach, Ph.D., Barnard College, Columbia University in the City of New York

Using studies of sentiment toward protest movements (e.g. Black Lives Matter) and other contentious societal issues, I aim to demonstrate the value of a systems view of the… Event interval: Single day event. [Virtual] Psychology Edwards Seminar with Lupita Gonzalez, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychology, Purchase College SUNY

Beyond Innocence: Effects of Race, Gender, and Skin Tone on Perceptions of Exonerees, Lupita Gonzalez, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Psychology, Purchase College SUNY   In this talk, I will present our research which applied an intersectional framework to examine how multiple social identities influence perceptions of exonerees. Exonerees—individuals who are wrongfully convicted of a crime and later proved innocent—continue to experience stigma and lack support to reintegrate into society post-incarceration. Although research indicates that the race and gender of exonerees influences stigma, prior literature is limited since it usually examines social categories (e.g. race, gender) as separate variables that do not interact. To address this gap, we applied an intersectional framework to examine how interactions between race, gender, and skin tone influence perceptions and support for exonerees. I will present our findings from two studies in which participants were presented with news stories discussing the… Event interval: Single day event. Analytical Chemistry Seminar: Prof. Richard Zare

"How Did Life Begin on Early Earth?" Professor Richard Zare - Department of Chemistry, Stanford University Hosts: Bo Zhang and Daniel Chiu  When the Earth was first formed, it was too hot to support life as we know it. It cooled off and life began. How? The original gases on early Earth did not contain carbon-nitrogen (C-N) bonds, but these are needed to form amino acids, peptides, proteins, and nucleic acids such as RNA and DNA. How were they made? Since the landmark experiments by Miller and Urey, it has been proposed that lightning could play a crucial role in synthesizing life’s building blocks from abiotic molecules. Arguments have been offered against this hypothesis based on what is thought to be the composition of early Earth ‘s atmosphere, the fact that lightning is intermittent, and the reaction products might become too dispersed. We demonstrate that spraying room-temperature water droplets into a gas mixture containing nitrogen (N2), methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and ammonia (NH3) leads… Event interval: Single day event.
