EXHIBITION: Designing, Crafting and Building Community: 30 Years of Practicing a Design / Build Learning Model
Designing, Crafting and Building Community represents a reflective “looking back” over thirty years since the design / build model was embedded into the Department of Landscape Architecture’s Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) program at the University of Washington.
As a unique model of teaching, learning and community service, the exhibition includes voices of past and current participants, and shows the narrative of its evolution.
At the heart of this program, design / build addresses issues of social justice, green building, ecological and sustainable design and supporting students to explore materials, forms, and responsive design. Employing multimedia, this immersive exhibition is a mosaic illustrating the diversity of projects, community partners, student experiences, and award-winning projects.
The exhibition will be on view April 1–May 1, 2026, and is free and open to the public. Visitors are welcome Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Cindy Anh Nguyen | Bibliotactics: Libraries and the Colonial Public in Vietnam
Libraries in French colonial Vietnam functioned as symbols of Western modernity and infrastructures of colonial knowledge. Yet Vietnamese readers pursued alternative uses of the library that exceeded imperial intentions. Bibliotactics examines the Hanoi and Saigon state libraries in colonial and postcolonial Vietnam, uncovering the emergence of a colonial public who reimagined the political meaning and social space of the library through public critique and day-to-day practice. Comprising government bureaucrats, library personnel, journalists, and everyday library readers, this colonial public debated the role of libraries as educational resource, civilizing instrument, and literary heritage. Moving beyond procolonial or anticolonial nationalism framings, Bibliotactics advances a relational theory of power that centers public reading culture contextualized within the library infrastructure of the colonial information order. As the first comprehensive history of the colonial and national library in Asia, this…

Coyotes in the Arboretum
Where: Graham Visitors Center, Washington Park Arboretum, Coyotes are part of our natural ecosystem and help control rodent and small wildlife populations. You may see them more in early summer, while raising pups, and in fall, when young coyotes leave their parents. Coyotes can lose their natural fear of people if they associate us with easy food like garbage and bird seed – this can lead to unsafe encounters. Humane hazing (being large and loud) helps reinforce natural avoidance of humans, keeping coyotes wild and safe. Join staff from Seattle Parks and Recreation, USDA Wildlife Services, UW Botanic Gardens, the Woodland Park Zoo, and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife at the Graham Visitors Center to learn more about coyote ecology and behavior. You will also be able to make your own noisemaker and practice effective humane hazing techniques.

In this guided workshop, you will receive tips and a shared, guided document to help you and your team take the first crucial steps toward creating strategy for dealing with your PDF backlog: inventory and assessment. It's much easier to create a long-term plan for handling the challenges posed by PDFs if you build a deeper awareness of how many you have, how they were created, and the purpose they serve. Inventorying and assessing your existing PDF backlog can also help you make informed choices about appropriate alternatives to PDFs in future workflow decisions. Through these moving individual stories, the filmmakers paint a vivid portrait of a bold musical experiment and a global search for the ties that bind. Curriculum Guide, Registration Link.

Vulveeta: Film Screening and Q&A with Filmmaker Maria Breaux
Grrrilda Beausoleil is turning 50.
All she wants is a reunion with her 1990s riot grrrl band—the one she abandoned just as they were about to make it big.
With a scrappy film crew documenting the journey, she navigates old wounds, new-age platitudes, and a San Francisco transformed by tech and displacement.
The band must decide whether they can trust Grrrilda again—and whether their DIY roots of wheat paste, stickers, and zines can still build community in a digital age.
Dubbed “SPINAL TAP with BIPOC and queers” by the Chicago Reader, the film is a hilarious improvised mockumentary that treats comedy as activism.
At its heart, the production centers LGBTQ community building across generations—reconciling past and present, passing the mic, and finding solidarity through creativity.

Psychology Edwards Seminar with Dr. Courtney Heldreth, Senior Staff User Experience Researcher & Manager, Google
Beyond the Algorithm: A Socio-Technical Approach to Advancing Equitable AI and Student Learning, Dr. Courtney Heldreth, Senior Staff User Experience Researcher & Manager, Google
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in the fabric of daily life and education, the technical challenges of optimization are becoming inseparable from the psychological and social contexts they inhabit. For social psychologists, this shift represents a critical inflection point: AI systems are not neutral tools but are deeply embedded in social systems of power, identity, and learning. This talk argues that achieving equitable AI requires moving beyond purely algorithmic fixes to adopt a socio-technical approach—one that centers social psychological methods to understand and mitigate human impact. Drawing on my research at Google Research, I will present three distinct projects that demonstrate why behavioral science is essential to the future of AI. By integrating social psychology into the heart of AI…

“Levers of Mastery” Community Lecture
Abstract
Universities teach many cognitive skills designed to launch students into career competence. But how does one move from competence to mastery? What skills must be developed for a career to become a true vocation?
In this lecture, sculptor, master stonemason and CEE Burges Visiting Professor Richard Rhodes reflects on what art and sculpture can teach engineers and architects. How do we nurture creativity, intuition and somatic intelligence to produce masterful work? Drawing on his own career at the intersection of engineering and art, Rhodes investigates the winding path toward mastery.
About the speaker
Richard Rhodes is a professional sculptor, master stonemason and scholar of stonework whose career bridges art, craft and the built environment. His work includes public art, private commissions and architectural collaboration around the world. He is the author of the 2025 book “Stone: Ancient Craft to Modern Mastery” and is serving as the 2025-26 Burges Visiting Professor in the UW Department…

Literary Translator Lecture: Tiffany Tsao, "Beyond Novelty and Exoticism: Taking the Long View in Translating Indonesian Literature "
Tiffany Tsao will discuss the challenges of translating Indonesian literature in the context of a publishing industry that has tended to value Indonesian works more for their “Indonesianness” than their literary value. Catering to a readership interested specifically in the history, culture, and living conditions of Indonesia has some near-term benefits, but does this approach do Indonesian writing a disservice over the long term? She will discuss, more specifically, how this state of affairs has shaped the decisions she has made as a translator – from the works she has chosen to translate, to her approach to the translation process itself.
Tiffany Tsao’s translations of Indonesian literature have received the PEN Translation Prize, the Republic of Consciousness Prize, and a longlisting for the International Booker Prize. She is also the author of The Majesties (2018) and But Won’t I Miss Me (2026), and Deputy Editor at the Sydney Review of Books.

Presenter: Yasmine Gomez, GWSS PhD Student
Moderator: Royalti Richardson, GWSS PhD Student

Distinguished Lecture Series: Mike Dodds - What Happens to Software When Proof is Cheap?
Abstract
In July 2025, three AI systems independently achieved gold-medal standard at the International Math Olympiad. One of them, Harmonic's Aristotle, did it by constructing formal proofs in the Lean proof assistant. Six months later, several AIs working together used Lean to solve an open problem posed by Paul Erdős. We may soon live in a strange world where AI is better at math than any human expert.
Lean and tools like it bridge two worlds: mathematicians use them to formalise theorems, but engineers use them to prove that code behaves correctly. This second use, formal verification, has a long history and a few notable successes in cryptography, operating systems, and parser security. But these successes have always been limited by the sheer difficulty of the mathematical reasoning they require.
Now, AI may be changing this picture. If mathematical reasoning is cheap, we could eliminate entire classes of bugs from systems at scale, guarantee that safety-critical code behaves as intended, or verify au…

Labor Zine-Making Party
The Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies is hosting a zine-making party on Thursday, April 16th, 5pm-7pm at Smith Hall, Room 320 (History Lounge)! RSVP here
This quarter is the first quarter we will be constructing a community-built labor zine! This zine is intended to be a visionary collection that, through its creation, allows individuals to explore their relation to labor, labor movements, and people’s struggles. The collective outcome will showcase the distinctiveness of our struggles while unifying us around a vision of liberation.
The Bridges Center recognizes that labor occurs everywhere under many conditions - at home, in the workplace, waged and unwaged, organized and unorganized. What you choose to create is entirely up to you; it could be poetry, prose, a drawing, collage, painting, or any combination.
We welcome all participants, including UW staff, students, faculty, and community members!

For all undergraduates, regardless of research participation, it is a chance to learn about the power of student research, leadership, and advocacy. It is also an opportunity for staff members to spend time networking with and learning alongside colleagues.
