KEMi Special Lecture: "Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Past, Present and Future" by Richard Bowtell, PhD, University of Nottingham

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was co-invented by Sir Peter Mansfield in the University of Nottingham's Department of Physics in 1973. Researchers from Nottingham University have continued to develop and apply improved techniques and hardware for MRI since the early days of its inception. Sir Peter (along with Paul Lauterbur) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 2003. Today there is a broad ranging, impactful research programme in MRI in Nottingham which spans physics, engineering, medicine, psychology, computer science, mathematics and life sciences and is centred on the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre (SPMIC).  The cross-faculty SPMIC operates a 7T scanner, two 3T scanners, and an 0.5 T upright system, as well hyperpolarisation equipment and OPM MEG facilities. We are currently developing an 11.7T human scanner which will form a national facility for the UK, creating new opportunities for studying the anatomy and function of the brain and body. Inorganic Chemistry Seminar: Prof. Raúl Hernández Sánchez

"Chemistry at interfaces: macrocyclic templates facilitating strong and weak interactions" Assistant Professor Raúl Hernández Sánchez  - Department of Chemistry, Rice University Host: Dianne Xiao Macrocyclic arene compounds have played a fundamental role in the development of supramolecular chemistry. Research on these systems have laid the foundations to explore and establish non-covalent interactions, e.g. hydrogen bonding, π···π stacking, C–H···π interactions. The Hernández Sánchez research group has taken the basic principles of macrocyclic arenes to design architectures enforcing metal–metal interactions towards the activation of small molecules, scaffolds capable of tubularly contorting aromatic systems, and frameworks able to bind anionic species for environmental remediation, all while retaining their intrinsic non-covalent interactions. In this seminar, Prof. Hernández Sánchez will discuss progress in each of these areas constantly crossing the boundaries between organic-inorganic synthesis and ma… Event interval: Single day event. Chemistry Seminar: Dr. George Agbeworvi

"Stereochemically Active Electron Lone Pairs and Their Implications for Neuromorphic Computing and Anion Batteries." Dr. George Agbeworvi - Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M Host: Nicholas M. Riley The stereochemical activity of 4/5/6s2 electron lone pairs of p-block cations provides an intriguing elaboration to VSEPR concepts of chemical bonding. In periodic inorganic solids, the stereochemical expression of these lone pairs underpins lattice distortions and midgap states situated in close proximity of the Fermi level.  Lattice anharmonicity induced by lone pair repulsions on p-block cations underpins an off-centering within their coordination environment and underpin temperature- and voltage-driven structural transformations that have substantial implications for thermoelectrics, thermochromics, photocatalysis, and nonlinear optics. In this seminar, I will discuss our laboratory's efforts in designing materials with stereochemically active electron lone pairs to tackle two critical frontiers shaping the… Event interval: Single day event. Psychology Edwards Lecture with Matt Smear, Associate Professor, Institute of Neuroscience, Department of Psychology, University of Oregon

Neurodiversifying Neuroscience, Matt Smear, Associate Professor, Institute of Neuroscience, Department of Psychology, University of Oregon   Biological variation is an inherent mechanism of life, supporting flexibility and resilience in an unpredictable world. In the brain, rich variation pervades gene expression, circuit development, neural coding, and cognition. Yet neuroscience has tended to idolize universals of function, treating variation as noise to be averaged away. In contrast, neurodiversifying neuroscience treats variation as a source of signal. Drawing on work across multiple domains of neuroscience, I will argue that neurodiversifying perspectives lay bare insights and opportunities hidden by normative traditions. Please join the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies as we celebrate the recent publication of Hazel D. Cole Fellow Gilah Kletenik’s new book, "Sovereignty Disrupted: Spinoza and the Disparity of Reality." CEI Interdisciplinary Seminar: Geraldine Richmond - Presidential Chair in Science, Professor of Chemistry; University of Oregon

Seminar Title: Research and Innovation Needed for the Nation's Energy Security     Energy security means having stable access to energy sources on a timely, sustainable and affordable basis. It is first and foremost a precondition to economic growth, political stability and prosperity while also being crucial in supporting the provision of basic needs - such as food, lighting, water, and essential health care. The recent predictions that U.S. demand for electricity could surge almost 16% over the next five years, due to US demand from new data centers and factories, has led to the urgent search for more energy resources that go beyond petroleum. This includes resources that are renewable, distributable, secure and cost effective. It also requires increased energy efficiencies and updating and modernizing the U.S. Grid. Scientific research and innovation have a crucial role to play in all of these areas, the focus of this presentation. Science in Medicine Lecture: Jarrad Scarlett, MD, PhD

“Role of Brain Fibroblast Growth Factor Signaling in the Regulation of Energy Homeostasis” Friday, October 31 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm SLU Orin Smith Auditorium & Zoom Webinar Abstract Obesity and type 2 diabetes are growing health epidemics that constitute a costly health care burden and increase the risk of several other life-threatening conditions (e.g. cardiovascular disease, chronic renal failure, blindness, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis). In this context, the efficacy of so called ‘incretin-mimetic’ drugs, which rely on actions in the CNS to mediate therapeutic benefit, is unquestionably impressive. As these effects result from durable, supraphysiological agonism of GLP-1 receptors (and receptors for other incretin peptides) throughout the body, however, the underlying mechanism can be viewed as relatively non-specific in the sense that 1) the specific neuronal targets are largely unknown, and hence 2) the potential for side effects is significant. Music for New Bodies

West Coast Premiere Directed by Peter Sellars Composed & Conducted by Matthew Aucoin Texts by Jorie Graham If you are captivated by the grandeur of orchestral music or the powerful storytelling of opera, Music for New Bodies is an unmissable event. This ambitious work by Matthew Aucoin, with poetry by Jorie Graham and directed by the visionary Peter Sellars, features the American Modern Opera Company creating a dramatic musical experience in the tradition of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. A “song of the earth” for the present day, Music for New Bodies confronts the most pressing questions of our era: What is the future of humanity? How have we altered our planet? And, in an age dominated by disembodied AI, how can we reclaim the value of a life lived in a mortal, embodied human form? With its stirring symphonic intensity and thought-provoking lyrics, this piece offers a deep and urgent meditation on the challenges we face as a species. Event interval: Single day event. Swim Parallel to the Shore: A Lecture Performance by Chloë Bass

Working from poet Tan Lin’s idea of “general feelings”—the notion that emotions are not our own (individually held or private) but shared as a kind of communal recipe—Chloë Bass will discuss the production of artistic work in the contemporary public realm using two conceits: First, what it means to think of objects through the scale of the human body, and thus as a stand-in for potential emotional action; and Second, what happens when we consider the presentation of static artworks as a form of rehearsal, which in turn provokes the co-creation of a world. Registration Required This talk complements GWSS x Henry student engagements around Bass’s public art project Soft Services (Field Trip on Oct 24; Student Workshop on Nov 4). Chloë Bass (b. 1984, New York, NY) is a multiform conceptual artist working in performance, situation, conversation, publication, and installation. 4th Sam Dubal Memorial Lecture: Tracie Canada, "How Black College Football Players Tackle their Everyday"

College football, with its prestige, drama, media, and money, is a core feature of the sporting landscape in the US. However, the promises of an “amateur” system that offers a “free” education contradict the reality. Based on long-term ethnographic research, Canada describes how this system particularly harms, disadvantages, and exploits the Black men who are demographically overrepresented on gridirons across the country. In this talk, she highlights how she engages multiple audiences in her ethnographic writing, which details how Black college football players tackle the systems that structure their everyday lives, and who helps them do it. Tracie Canada is the Andrew W. Mellon Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology and director of the HEARTS (Health, Ethnography, and Race through Sports) Lab at Duke University. She is a Black feminist anthropologist and ethnographer whose research uses sport to theorize race, kinship and care, gender, and the performing body. Co-sponsored by the Henry M. Ghazal Celebration: Poetry Readings Across Languages

This event brings together colleagues and students for a collective celebration of the ghazal, a poetic form that has flourished in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu, and many other languages. Each participant will read one of their favorite ghazals in its original language, followed by a translation into English.  By foregrounding oral recitation and the experience of listening across languages, the gathering highlights the ghazal’s role as a transregional and transhistorical form of poetic expression. Together, we will reflect on the pleasures of sound, the challenges of translation, and the enduring vitality of the ghazal across literary traditions. Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Denny Hall (DEN). Campus room: Denny 211. Accessibility Contact: ariafani@uw.edu. Event Types: Academics. Lectures/Seminars. Event sponsors: UW Translation Studies Hub. Friday, November 14, 2025, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.
