Lecture Title:
“Neurotechnology to promote long-term recovery after brain and spinal cord injury”
Abstract:
Neuroprosthetic devices have tremendous potential to improve quality of life after brain and spinal cord injury. Neuroprostheses that record and stimulate neural activity have progressed from animal studies to human trials, including the approach of using activity recorded from the brain to control Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and epidural spinal stimulation and restore movement to paralyzed muscles. Another promising method for restoring movement and enhancing rehabilitation is direct stimulation of the spinal cord. Both transcutaneous and epidural stimulation can activate neural circuits distal to an injury, leading to both direct muscle contraction or facilitating long-term neuroplasticity, and recovery that restores volitional control of movement for months after the stimulation is discontinued. Optogenetic stimulation of the spinal cord is another promising approach to achieve specific…

UW Instruction Accessibility Meetup
Faculty and course designers are invited to join an informal and friendly conversation about making online components of your courses accessible to students with disabilities.
Ask questions about accessibility and universal design for learning (UDL), hear colleagues' ideas, and share what is working for your own courses.
Meetings are hosted by Mary-Colleen Jenkins, an instruction accessibility specialist with Accessible Technology Services (ATS). Mary-Colleen is a former UW instructor so this is also a great opportunity to discuss logistics and how to set priorities for improving course accessibility without feeling overwhelmed.

ADA Title II Regulation on Accessible Tech: What it Means for Your School
Eve Hill will explain the Department of Justice’s new ADA Title II regulation requiring websites and digital offerings of state & local governments as well as public institutions of higher education to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 Level AA. She will address the general rule and its exceptions; she will also discuss how institutions of higher education can best be prepared for compliance with the rule when it goes into effect in 2026.

OIE Spring Microaggressions Training

An Evening with Christine Sun Kim
Berlin-based artist Christine Sun Kim discusses her wide-ranging practice around sound and language. Kim, who was born in California and is now based in Berlin, reflects on her experiences as part of the Deaf community, using performance, video, drawing, writing, and technology to explore how we perceive and understand sound. In her talk, Kim will delve into her work within various systems of visual communication, including American Sign Language (ASL), musical notation, infographics, and television captioning. With humor and critique, Kim illuminates the complexities of social interactions where language, culture, and access collide.
