ASSETS virtual workshop: Accessibility research, collaboration & community building

This workshop aims to explore the role of collaboration and community-building in accessibility research within resource-limited contexts. Specifically, we seek to understand how inclusive research practices can inform cost trade-offs and contribute to the development of affordable assistive technologies. The goal of this workshop is to bring together a diverse group of participants, including early-career and experienced researchers, educators, disability activists, designers, and members of the disabled community. The workshop aims to foster a global community of accessibility and ICTD researchers and produce guidelines on methods and best practices for collaboration and capacity building with disabled communities and researchers across borders. ASSETS virtual workshop: Teaching Accessibility Across Disciplines

This workshop brings together accessibility researchers and educators to explore topics, approaches, resources, and challenges involved in teaching accessibility across different disciplines. With the April 2026 Title II deadline approaching, this workshop is especially relevant. While accessibility education has been extensively explored in computer science, its integration into other disciplines is under-investigated. The workshop has two main objectives: Providing a forum for researchers and educators from different disciplines to exchange ideas about accessibility education. , Exploring the relationship between accessibility education and accessible teaching practices as influenced by Title II. The tangible outcome is a report summarizing workshop discussions and inviting participant contributions. Software design, AI, Privacy, and Disability

Maitreya Shah and Ariana Aboulafia, from the Center for Democracy in Technology & American Association of People with Disabilities, will talk about their organizations’ recent work on assistive technology and privacy by design. This guidebook, published in July around the 35th anniversary of the ADA, aims to provide startups with easy, actionable steps to incorporate privacy into their design process. Maitreya Shah is a lawyer and researcher, a current DIFxTech grant recipient for a joint project with the Bazelon Center, with extensive experience working at the intersection of technology regulation and disability justice. He is Technology Policy Director at American Association of People with Disabilities; previously, he was a fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. Join HCDE’s wearABLE Futures Design Jam! Join 30–40 HCDE students for a fast-paced, hands-on design jam focused on making wearable technology more accessible and inclusive. Drop-in (online via Zoom) office hours for computing instructors to talk through, co-design, or evaluate efforts to make computing course resources more accessible. Potential topics include broad overviews on digital accessibility, discuss auditing and remediation strategies for specific types of content (e.g. PDFs, websites, videos, math, diagrams), or co-develop a plan for implementing accessibility (for example, making a checklist, planning TA or staff trainings, or evaluating automated tools and their shortcomings). This series of events honors Devva Kasnitz's dream to expand disability studies from the ivory tower of academia to the homes of everyday people.
