Title: Bioengineering Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) in vitro models for cell-matrix and mechanobiology investigations,
Abstract: Mechanical loads regulate the homeostatic and allostatic signaling controlling temporomandibular joint (TMJ) heath and disease. Allostatic signaling is promoted through mechanical overloading, initiating both the remodeling and degeneration of the extracellular matrix (ECM) during arthropathies such as osteoarthritis (OA). Changes in the composition and organization of the ECM have a multifaceted role on cellular mechanotransduction, impacting the mechanical microenvironment surrounding the cell, the cytoskeletal architecture, and the transcription of key differentiation markers.
