O, Human, Human, Wherefore Art Thou? Cultivating and Sustaining Human Presence in Online Courses in the Age of AI

REGISTRATION REQUIRED Since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, much of the conversation about generative AI in higher education has concerned academic integrity. However, another impact of this technology on teaching and learning deserves further and deeper consideration as well: what it means for human presence in our courses. Generative AI challenges human presence in online learning, raising concerns about instructor presence and student engagement. This session explores strategies to sustain these elements, despite or with AI. REGISTRATION REQUIRED In this guided workshop, you will receive tips and a shared, guided document to help you and your team take the first crucial steps toward creating strategy for dealing with your PDF backlog: inventory and assessment. It's much easier to create a long-term plan for handling the challenges posed by PDFs if you build a deeper awareness of how many you have, how they were created, and the purpose they serve. Inventorying and assessing your existing PDF backlog can also help you make informed choices about appropriate alternatives to PDFs in future workflow decisions. Monthly UW Instruction Accessibility Meetup

Faculty and course designers are invited to join an informal, friendly conversation about making online components of courses accessible to students with disabilities. Ask questions about accessibility and universal design for learning (UDL), hear colleagues’ ideas, and share what is working for your own courses! Meetings are hosted by Mary-Colleen Jenkins, an instruction accessibility specialist with Accessible Technology Services (ATS). Mary-Colleen is a former UW instructor herself, so this is a great opportunity to discuss logistics and how to set priorities for improving course accessibility without feeling overwhelmed. Ask questions about accessibility and universal design for learning (UDL), hear colleagues’ ideas, and share what is working for your own courses! Meetings are hosted by Mary-Colleen Jenkins, an instruction accessibility specialist with Accessible Technology Services (ATS). Mary-Colleen is a former UW instructor herself, so this is a great opportunity to discuss logistics and how to set priorities for improving course accessibility without feeling overwhelmed. Lights, Camera, AI: Accelerating Course Design with Generative Tools

REGISTRATION REQUIRED This session explores how a cross-functional team of learning designers and media specialists leveraged generative AI tools to design and develop a Spring 2025 course. The team utilized platforms like ChatGPT and HeyGen to develop key course assets, from course mapping and scriptwriting to video production. Generative AI supported the creation and refinement of the course description, learning outcomes, weekly objectives, and video scripts. With HeyGen, the media team produced high-quality video segments using minimal input from faculty, overcoming one common barrier in content development: instructor availability for on-camera work. This presentation will share behind-the-scenes insights into the collaborative process, highlight how each tool was used at different phases, and reflect on the opportunities and challenges of integrating AI tools into course development workflows.
