Dr. Emma Spiro, Associate Professor, UW Information School; Director, Center for an Informed Public; UW Provost Academy Fellow

Mentoring-for-Leadership Series Academic researchers are increasingly faced with attacks on their character, credibility, and work. While the impacts and harm of these crises can feel acute and personal, they also pose longer term risks to academic institutions that contribute to the overall decline in trust in science and the academy, which in turn can feed back to embolden campaigns of harassment and harm. In this November Mentoring-for-leadership event, Dr. Emma Spiro will discuss experiences, support needs, and ideas for response in cases of targeted harassment and intimidation. This event is designed to build peer support networks on campus, share practices and resources for faculty,  and inform institutional efforts for researcher support.  Speaker Dr. Emma Spiro, Associate Professor, UW Information School; Director, Center for an Informed Public; UW Provost Academy Fellow. Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Gerberding Hall (GRB). Campus room: Gerb 142. Accessibility Contact: Leyla Salmassi advcic@uw.edu. Event Types: Workshops. Target Audience: UW ADVANCE Faculty. Tuesday, November 18, 2025, 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM.

Peer Coaching Kick Off 2025

Write Right Now Peer coaching groups among the ADVANCE faculty are a great source of support, feedback, and advice. Groups typically include 6-8 faculty at a similar career stage (e.g. pre-tenure or post-tenure), each of whom are from a different department here at UW. The groups use a peer coaching model from the book Every Other Thursday. ADVANCE will be holding peer coaching group info session to share details about the format, practice peer coaching, and engage in real time problem solving. After the kick off event, the peer coaching groups will be set up. Participants can still be placed in a group regardless of whether they attend the kick off event. Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Gerberding Hall (GRB). Campus room: Gerb 142. Accessibility Contact: Leyla Salmassi advcic@uw.edu. Event Types: Workshops. Thursday, November 20, 2025, 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM.
