PANEL: War or peace? U.S.-North Korea Relations

The June 12 summit in Singapore between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un marked a high point in U.S.-North Korea relations. But in recent months, diplomatic progress has stalled, and confusion abounds about what exactly had been agreed to and whether peace in the Korean Peninsula is in peril once again. What are the prospects for diplomacy that could lead to a breakthrough? Will North Korea accept a defined path towards denuclearization? What are the common grounds whereby the United States and North Korea can build trust and avoid catastrophic miscalculations that could lead to war? From the Pacific Northwest to Washington, DC, what is the impact on Americans and our allies in East Asia if diplomacy fails? To help us answer these questions, The D.C.-based Council on Korean Americans (CKA) is organizing a free, public event in partnership with the Korea Foundation and the Henry M. Andres Donangelo (FBE Seminar)

Speaker:     Andres Donangelo, University of Texas at Austin McCombs School Paper:         Priceless Consumption Co-author:  Mindy Xiaolan, University of Texas Austin McCombs School Abstract:    “Aggregate measures provide an incomplete picture of the de facto aggregate consumption since they ignore any nonmarketable sources of consumption value. We denote priceless consumption the universe of all non-pecuniary consumption that is orthogonal to aggregate consumption, but that is possibly related to the composition of aggregate consumption. We estimate a demand system to recover a priceless consumption series from the joint dynamics of the subcomponents of aggregate consumption expenditures. We find that priceless consumption is large and more volatile than marketable consumption and that the dynamics of the estimated priceless consumption series significantly improve the performance of the consumption-based CAPM.”.
