Get a behind-the-scenes look at design and research at Starbucks. During this HCDE Career Trek, students will visit the organization, learn more about its work, and have opportunities to ask questions and connect with professionals.
About HCDE Career Treks: HCDE partners with regional organizations to give students an inside look at different workplaces and career paths through site visits, Q&A sessions, and networking opportunities. Career Treks are designed for career exploration and learning and are not recruiting events.
Space is limited, and an application is required. Application information will be shared with HCDE students in Tuesday Tips approximately 2–3 weeks before the event. Students are responsible for their own transportation.

What it Takes to Have Tidy Data: The Case of AIDS Research Infrastructures
Today, you can get data from just about any field of science or inquiry with the click of a button. This talk focuses on the backgrounded work that made this possible in one field—AIDS science. Data that demanded the labor of thousands of HIV-negative and HIV-positive participants, hundreds of scientists, across continents and over decades, can today arrive in your hands tidy and organized, almost free, with the quick click of a button. The talk uses this history to explore the concept of “punctualization”: the process by which something big, complicated, and internally heterogeneous comes to appear as a singular thing—a dot, a period, a unit: “data.”

Put your human-centered design skills into practice during a hands-on civic design jam with the Civic Health Initiative and the Evans School.
Students will explore a central question: Why might young people feel that voting isn’t worth their time? Together, participants will consider the experiences, barriers, perceptions, and needs that shape how young people engage with democracy, then explore opportunities to redesign civic participation so young people feel more informed, empowered, heard, and motivated to take part.
Attendees will hear from Mónica Guzmán, author of “I Never Thought of it That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times”; founder and CEO of Reclaim Curiosity; advisor and debate chair at Braver Angels; and host of “A Braver Way” podcast. Designing and shipping products with AI at Adobe
AI is reshaping the industry so fast that everything around it is shifting too, including how people get hired. Interviewing today looks very different than it did even a year ago. Candidates are now expected to be “AI-ready,” but what does that actually mean? And if AI can do your job, what is your job? Sapna Gathani, who leads Adobe’s Design Frontier Engineering team, will share her perspective on both questions. She has watched hundreds of designers adopt AI firsthand, and she’ll talk about the human skills that still matter and that keep you employed. Students will leave knowing what makes them hard to replace, and what they can do better to prepare for their next interview.
