CHID/JSIS Summer A 2026 Munich Study Abroad Information Session

Learn more about the Summer A 2026 CHID/JSIS Munich study abroad program, "Mad Kings and Monuments: Identity, Human Rights, and Reckoning in Germany."With a focus on Munich, the Bavarian region of Germany, and Berlin, this program offers place-based historical exploration of social, political, racial, religious, and cultural dimensions of German nation-building before and after the Holocaust. Famous for its picturesque mountains and castles, Bavaria has also been a crucible for wrenching social change, and has fostered nationalist domestic policy and world-views ranging from “Mad” King Ludwig to the Third Reich. Students will learn about the philosophy and practice of eugenics within the German historical context, while touring the actual sites where the policies originated and were put into practice. This 2026 summer B term program based in León, Spain explores migration, identity, and belonging in the Mediterranean. Students will engage with literature, music, film, and other cultural production to examine how migrants reshape national identities and how cultural expression responds to displacement and integration. Coursework is anchored by a rich selection of texts from Spain, France, and Italy and will be complemented by site visits, guest speakers, and facilitated community interaction. In addition to studying migration from academic and artistic perspectives, students will reflect on their own roles as visitors and tourists abroad. Using Anu Taranath’s Beyond Guilt Trips as a framework, the program encourages critical thinking about privilege, positionality, and cultural engagement in global travel. Learn more about the Autumn 2026 "CHID Paris: An Imagined Cityscape" program. Co-sponsored by the Department of Landscape Architecture, this program offers students a chance to explore this modern “invention of nature” from three different perspectives—historical-scientific, urban sustainability-public health, and literary-artistic. Each class will focus on a different segment of this trajectory, the late 18th/early 19th century, the later 19th century, and the early to mid-20th century. All three classes will include exploration of Paris’s urban-natural landscapes, its gardens, its museums, and its architecture, as well as literary and visual representations of the shifting imagination of nature. Intended for second-year engineering students, this program allows students to stay on track with curriculum requirements while spending a quarter in Rome. The program curriculum aligns with the course requirements for students interested in studying Aeronautics & Astronautics, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, though students interested in any engineering major are welcome to participate.
