2025 Lamport Lecture: Luis Fernando Santana (UC Davis) "Random Yet Rhythmic: How Microvascular Networks Shape ATP Dynamics and Cardiac Excitability"

Abstract: The cardiac cycle begins when the sinoatrial node initiates an action potential that propagates cell to cell, ultimately triggering atrial and then ventricular contraction. In this talk, we will present data supporting a new model of cardiac electro-metabolic coupling that accounts for regional differences in vascularization and ATP supply, which promote diverse electrical signaling modalities throughout the heart. A key element of this model is that beatto-beat variations in ATP regulate cardiac muscle excitability, intracellular calcium release, and contraction. The talk will conclude with a discussion of how these insights deepen our understanding of electro-metabolic coupling in both healthy and diseased hearts . Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: William H. Foege Genome Sciences (GNOM). Campus room: S060. Accessibility Contact: nbio@uw.edu. Event Types: Lectures/Seminars. Thursday, May 15, 2025, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM.

Well-Being Check In hosted by @ UW Medicine

As a way of understanding what is happening for folks across our system, we will be holding a drop-in hour every other Monday from 3-4pm starting on April 21st and running through June 16th.    During our response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we gathered folks in our system whose work connected to well-being.  Those conversations were incredibly valuable for gaining insights into what was impacting our community – and importantly, it helped us think through what we could do to support people.    We hope that these optional open format sessions will give us a space to support each other and deepen our understanding of the current situation. Event interval: Single day event. Online Meeting Link: https://washington.zoom.us/j/93726557020. Accessibility Contact: anneb7@uw.edu. Event Types: Meetings. Monday, May 19, 2025, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
