Chaityabhumi: Documentary Film Screening and Q&A with Director Somnath Waghamare, Register | Campus map | Visitor parking info Join the South Asia Center for a screening of the documentary film Chaityabhumi (trailer) and a discussion with director Somnath Waghamare. For the Dalit movement in India, one of the significant and important places is Chaityabhumi in Mumbai. The Dalit movement in Maharashtra has had a continuous and unbroken presence for 100 years now. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s anti-caste and Dalit human rights movement began in this land. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar himself stayed in Mumbai for most of his life, and when he died on December 6, 1956, his last rites were done near the sea at Dadar. His followers later built Chaityabhumi at that spot. Every year 1 to 6 December, millions of Dalit-Bahujan across the nation visit this place and pay tribute to their revolutionary leader. But the city’s media and elite Mumbaikars only show disdain for this peaceful event. This documentary film will bring to… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Allen Library (ALB). "Just Sustainabilities" in Policy, Planning and Practice

Sustainability, though a widely used word, is often inadequate when applied in practice. Its fullest meaning varies across geographies, ethnicities, cultures, and economic realities. Prof. Julian Agyeman’s pioneering work teases apart such nuances to clarify how we might pursue “just sustainabilities” or more fair and equitable approaches to address uncertain futures. On April 24, 2024, Prof Agyeman will expand on these ideas, working from the big picture down to what professionals and students can do at the local level to positively impact desired outcomes. This lecture is hosted by The University of Washington’s College of Built Environments and Department of Urban Design and Planning (UDP). It is organized by the Department’s Professionals Council’s Planning Lecture Committee. Julian will outline the concept of just sustainabilities as a response to the ‘equity deficit’ of much sustainability thinking and practice. He will explore his contention that who can belong in our cities will ultimately… Campus location: Architecture Hall (ARC). Campus room: 147. Accessibility Contact: Edith Olguin. CSDE Seminar - Patchwork Apartheid: Private Restriction, Racial Segregation, and Urban Inequality - Colin Gordon

Speaker: Colin Gordon, History, University of Iowa Abstract: Drawing on a unique record of property restrictions excavated from local property records in five Midwestern counties, this research documents the prevalence of private property restriction in the era before zoning and building codes were widely employed and before federal redlining sanctioned the segregation of American cities and suburbs. This record of private restriction—documented and mapped to the parcel level in Greater Minneapolis, Greater St. Louis, and two Iowa counties—reveals the racial segregation process both on the ground, in the strategic deployment of restrictions throughout transitional central city neighborhoods and suburbs, and in the broader social and legal construction of racial categories and racial boundaries. Enforcement of private racial restrictions was held unconstitutional in 1948, and such agreements were prohibited outright in 1968. But their premises and assumptions, and the segregation they had accomplished, were… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Parrington Hall (PAR). Steven Pinker: Rationality: What It Is, Why It Seems Scarce, Why It Matters

External Events Today, humanity is reaching new heights of scientific understanding—and at the same time appears to be losing its mind. Why do we find ourselves flooded with fake news, medical quackery, conspiracy theorizing, and “post-truth” rhetoric? It can’t be that humans are just an irrational species — cavemen out of time saddled with biases, fallacies, and illusions. After all, we discovered the laws of nature, lengthened and enriched our lives, and discovered the benchmarks for rationality itself. Instead, we think in ways that are sensible in the low-tech contexts in which we spend most of our lives, but fail to take advantage of the powerful tools of reasoning our best thinkers have discovered over the millennia: logic, critical thinking, probability, correlation and causation, and optimal ways to update beliefs and commit to choices individually and with others. Also, the rational pursuit of self-interest, sectarian solidarity, and uplifting mythology by individuals can add up to crippling irrationality in a socie… Event interval: Single day event. Urban Studies Annual Lecture Series: 'Racial Capitalism and the (Re)Making of Urban Spaces

Join the School of Urban Studies for our Annual Lecture Series. Special guest speaker Dr. Prentiss Dantzler of the University of Toronto presents 'Racial Capitalism and the (Re)Making of Urban Spaces' Urban scholars have long argued that capitalism and racism have a symbolic relationship realized in the built environment. Yet, few have extended their analysis beyond lower levels of scale to a broader political economy of place. In describing the urban political economy, Dr. Dantzler employs racial capitalism as a theoretical intervention to explore the particular plight of African Americans and their quest to claim property and land for themselves. By situating racism and capitalism as interlocking systems of dispossession and displacement, the "housing question' is brought into perspective. Event interval: Single day event. Embodiment and Urban Planning

The third in a series called Reimagining Planning, public webinars that focus on the edge of innovation in urban planning and policy. Traditionally Urban Planning has had a long legacy of harming communities of color, developing and implementing racist policies, and destruction of the built environment. This series openly critiques this current iteration of urban planning in the hopes of proposing new theories, strategies, and concepts that help us arrive at an iteration of the field where we all belong. We are interested in helping foster meaningful conversations among urban planners hungry for more and to engage with new audiences that have always been curious about urban planning but may not know what exactly do urban planners do. Event interval: Single day event. Online Meeting Link: https://belonging.berkeley.edu/reimagining-urban-planning-state-practice. Campus room: webinar. Accessibility Contact: 510-642-3326. AIA Seattle Urban Design Forum

External Events Join AIA Seattle’s Urban Design Forum for a monthly look at our plans and goals as a committee, taking place every fourth Wednesday at 12pm. We’ll be looking at questions such as: What is a suburb? How do we renovate suburban development to be more sustainable? How are the region and the city urbanizing? How should they be? Who is moving into the city? Who is being displaced? Can gentrification be inclusive and equitable? How is technology transforming mobility? How is city housing policy manipulating the private market? What will the new waterfront look like without the Viaduct? Anyone with thoughts regarding topics, speakers or a particular curiosity regarding urban design in our region is welcome to join us and weigh in on the focus for the upcoming forums in 2023.
