SHACS: Nikolai Dembrow, PhD - Cell-type-specific differences in excitatory neurons across auditory, associative, and motor cortices in non-human primates

It has long been known that the cerebral cortex is not a uniform structure. The cellular composition, cytoarchitecture, and connectivity vary across auditory, motor, and prefrontal regions. Single-cell RNA sequencing has extended these regional variations to the level of individual neurons: cortical areas share common cell types, but those cell types show regional differences in gene expression. How these specializations contribute to local computation remains poorly understood. This talk presents recent work bridging this gap in primates, focusing on excitatory pyramidal neurons, which possess elaborate dendritic arbors through which they receive and integrate synaptic input. Using Patch-seq, a methodology that simultaneously captures the transcriptome, physiology, and morphology of individual neurons, we examine how gene expression differences relate to the morpho-electric properties of these cells in macaque neocortex. Identifying which properties are conserved versus divergent between rodents and primates… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Magnuson Health Sciences Center G (HSG).
