SHACS: Jennifer Baumingham, PhD - Toddler Talk: Iterative Development of a Model to Support Language and Social-Emotional Development in Infant-Toddler Community Childcare Programs
There is a well-documented connection between toddlers’ language and social-emotional development (Irwin et al. 2002; McDonald et al. 2018). Toddlers with delayed language development are at significantly higher risk for social, emotional, and behavioral challenges as compared to age-matched peers with typical language development, with evidence that this relation extends into later childhood (Davis & Qi, 2020; Irwin et al. 2012; St. Clair et al. 2019). Over the past four years, the Toddler Talk research team at the University of Washington and Vanderbilt University has partnered with infant-toddler childcare providers to iteratively develop and pilot test a blended classroom intervention model to improve language and social-emotional development in toddlers who are at-risk for persistent developmental language disorders (DLD) and behavioral challenges. In this presentation, Dr. Baumingham will share lessons learned from developing and implementing the intervention in authentic childcare settings, impacts…

2025 Lamport Lecture: Luis Fernando Santana (UC Davis) "Random Yet Rhythmic: How Microvascular Networks Shape ATP Dynamics and Cardiac Excitability"
Neurobiology & Biophysics
Abstract:
The cardiac cycle begins when the sinoatrial node initiates an action potential that propagates cell to cell, ultimately triggering atrial and then ventricular contraction. In this talk, we will present data supporting a new model of cardiac electro-metabolic coupling that accounts for regional differences in vascularization and ATP supply, which promote diverse electrical signaling modalities throughout the heart. A key element of this model is that beatto-beat variations in ATP regulate cardiac muscle excitability, intracellular calcium release, and contraction. The talk will conclude with a discussion of how these insights deepen our understanding of electro-metabolic coupling in both healthy and diseased hearts

What does normal mean? Mathematical frameworks for precision analysis of patient bloodwork | IMDS Seminar Series Talk
What does normal mean? Mathematical frameworks for precision analysis of patient bloodwork
Brody H. Foy, DPhil
Assistant Professor, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Washington
Abstract:
Clinical blood tests are usually interpreted using a generic reference population - but what is normal for a patient is specific to both their physiology and their clinical context. In this talk I will detail various computational approaches that can be used to define patient- and context-specific benchmarks for interpreting common blood tests. Applying these methods to large patient datasets, I will show how personalized benchmarks can enhance phenotyping, improve diagnostic sensitivity, and limit unnecessary clinical work-ups - advancing the goal of personalized medicine.
