SHACS: Gavriel D. Kohlberg, MD - New Technologies for Speech Perception in Noise

New approaches to speech perception in noise – spanning modern hearing aids, speech enhancement algorithms, and automated captioning – have the potential to substantially improve everyday communication, but they can be difficult to study with traditional experimental paradigms. In this seminar, I will describe studies that ask a practical question: when does a new assistive approach actually help a listener, and how should we test it? I will discuss real-time captioning using automated speech recognition, where benefit depends on caption accuracy and listener characteristics, underscoring the importance of evaluating heterogeneous populations. I will then present an experimental paradigm for a distance-based noise reduction algorithm and highlight the challenges of benchmarking a lab-developed system against commercial technologies. Finally, I will describe experiments that probe how commercial hearing aids behave across spatial configurations, enabling more interpretable comparisons between proprietary syste… Event interval: Single day event.
