SHACS: Mario A. Svirsky, PhD - Frequency-Place Maps in Postlingually Deaf Cochlear Implant Users: Hardwired or Plastic?

Adult cochlear implant (CI) users provide a powerful model to probe the limits of auditory plasticity under altered frequency-to-place maps. We examined anatomical and perceptual frequency mismatch in single-sided deafness CI users using a novel speech-based acoustic model selection paradigm, in which listeners adjusted vocoders to match CI percepts. Results revealed substantial inter-subject variability and a consistent basalward shift in perceived frequency allocation. Perceptual mismatch decreased with experience and depended on electrode location, indicating partial but incomplete adaptation, with potential consequences for speech outcomes. In striking contrast, electroacoustic pitch-matching with pure tones showed little to no change over time. This dissociation—robust adaptation for speech but stability for tonal stimuli—suggests that auditory plasticity is stimulus-dependent and driven by behaviorally meaningful inputs. These findings challenge simple models of uniform plasticity and motivate individua… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Haring Center, EEU School (CHSC). Campus room: Room CD150.
