Virtual Weight Training Class with The Whole U

From Genomes to Biological Insight, the Human Genome Project Today
The Human Genome Project was completed in 2003 after an international collaboration. Efforts then turned to interpreting the vast amount of genomic data being produced. One aspect of the interpretation challenge is that approximately half of all genetic test recipients receive results containing variants of uncertain significance (VUS), meaning that there is insufficient evidence to determine if the variant may be benign or cause disease. Laboratory assays have emerged to fill the gap in our understanding of human genetic variation. In this talk, we will cover what we know about the human genome and ongoing work to make sense of the sequences that make us different.

Dr. Dan Holmes is a postdoctoral scientist in the Fowler lab (UW), where he works on developing tools to understand gene function. He got his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Washington, working on a cancer-causing virus, and has previously studied prions in yeast and viruses in phytoplankton. Description: We gather weekday mornings at 9:00am on Zoom for a short mindfulness practice. We settle in for the first few minutes with light guidance then practice together in silence and end promptly at 9:20. All levels of experience with mindfulness are welcome.
