Now an aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, “you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you”—so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd”—a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. Our Rayne of Sunshine 2nd Annual Blood drive and Benefit

Rayne was diagnosed with a form of Leukemia in April of 2022, at the age of three. Before she could even start chemo, she needed blood transfusions in order for her treatment to work. Since then, she has continued to receive multiple blood, platelet and plasma transfusions and will likely need more. In the midst of the stress and fear that comes with her diagnosis, we’re grateful for the consistent availability of blood products that our community continues to selflessly donate. As we approach the second year anniversary of her diagnosis, we continue to commemorate, give back, and celebrate how far she has come. 7th Annual Ugly Purse Auction

On April 27th, The Rendezvous of Luxemburg will host the 7th annual Ugly Purse Auction. A live auction begins at 7 pm will all proceeds of the fundraiser going to the Casco Fire Department. Benefit for Owen Obey

In July 2023, 6 year old Owen Obey was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer. He has undergone countless rounds of chemo and an extensive surgery, a rotationplasty, to remove part of his leg. As he was about to start his final round of chemo in March 2024, two additional tumors were found in his arm and collarbone. Unfortunately, his journey is far from over. A Hmong Cultural Symposium: An Exploration of Hmong-American Identity

We invite everyone to Manitowoc Public Library on Thursday, May 30, from 5-7:45 PM for “A Hmong Cultural Symposium: An Exploration of Hmong-American Identity." This year’s topic will focus on the Hmong refugee story. In particular, we are going to share the stories of four Hmong-Americans who have generously given their time to share their journeys. In order to escape the war-torn country of Laos, the Hmong people had to cross the Mekong River for the safety of the refugee camps in Thailand, and then, eventually, to the United States. Upon arrival, new struggles unique to the Hmong refugees arose and each narrative shows the strength of the refugee spirit. These experiences are filled with sorrow, death, and trauma; each story sharing the themes of struggle and loss.
