The Moonshot Approach to Philanthropy: A Framework From “What-Ifs?” to Action

Business Families Institute Philanthropy today faces a paradox: the problems it seeks to solve are increasingly complex, yet funding practices remain cautious, fragmented, and short-term. This launch event introduces a new report on enhancing risk-taking in philanthropy, offering a practical and evidence-informed framework for funders who want to pursue systemic change without mistaking recklessness for courage. Drawing on research, practitioner insights, and real-world cases, the report reframes risk not as something to be avoided, but as something to be designed, governed, and learned from. The event brings together philanthropists, foundation leaders, intermediaries, and ecosystem partners for a concise presentation of the report’s core ideas, followed by a facilitated dialogue on what it would actually take to fund bolder bets over the long-term. This is not a call for “more risk” for its own sake. It is an invitation to take better risk—not by waiting for certainty, but by building the capability to fund boldly in its absence. Ideas Festival 2026 | Building Resilient Legal Systems in the AI Age

School of Social Sciences Artificial intelligence is reshaping the global environment in which legal systems operate—not only by transforming how individuals, firms, and governments act, but also by reconfiguring the broader political economy that sustains them. Resilience in this context means ensuring that legal systems can anticipate, absorb, and adapt to technological disruption while continuing to deliver justice, maintain legitimacy, and safeguard rights. Without deliberate strategies for resilience, legal systems risk narrowing into brittle, tech-dominated structures: constrained in their options, vulnerable to capture, and unable to fulfil their core functions.  Engage with this panel that convenes experts across academia, government, and industry to explore how law can remain a stabilising force in the age of AI and to identify practical strategies for embedding resilience “by design” into legal institutions. *Registration starts at 3.00pm. Digital Business Research Peak Seminar Series

Area Administration We study whether greater digital engagement increases the risk of identity theft by exploiting bank branch closures as a shock that shifts economic activity online. Using a quasi-natural experiment, we find causal evidence that branch closures increase identity theft, particularly in more vulnerable communities. Exposed consumers spend more time on mobile apps and shift their expenditures from offline to online channels. Adversarial activities associated with identity theft, such as unwanted calls and phishing attempts, increase after branch closures. Overall, our evidence suggests that digitalization offers consumer benefits, but also imposes hidden privacy costs. Subtitle: Grand Theft Identity: The Privacy Costs of Digitalization. Ideas Festival 2026 | Resilient Singapore: Reimagining the Civic Core through Environmental History

School of Social Sciences The history of Singapore’s urban centre is a showcase for resilience in the island city. Its changing landscape is a direct reflection of the things that have made Singapore, from the early port to the agricultural areas, military and civic development, to the reclamation projects. Their development has been the cornerstone of, and reflected, social and economic growth, as Singapore moved through good times, and bad. Each of these socio-economic shifts has left its memory inscribed into the landscape and with them, a story. Starting from Armenian Street at the front of SMU’s Yong Pung How School of Law, this tour delves into the landscape under our feet, imagining a Singapore as it was at different points in its chronology, from the agricultural development of the nineteenth century, to the technological innovations of the early twentieth century, to the Japanese occupation, and beyond. Strategy & Entrepreneurship Research Seminar

Area Administration Are real options useful for management research? This topic was hotly debated twenty years ago. Real options were said to be inapplicable to management research and to lack conceptual uniqueness. Whereas responses to the caveat about the non-uniqueness of real options were disparate, the concern about the non-applicability of the theory was considered remediable. Such responses left the impression that real options lost the debate, and the use of real options in management research started to stagnate. This paper reviews the opposing positions in the debate, establishes the conceptual uniqueness of real options, and outlines responses to the concern about the non-applicability of real options to management research to establish the promise of the theory as a key pillar for research in strategic management. Finance Research Seminar

Area Administration We show that the age composition of the population can shape the speed at which businesses adopt new technologies, using evidence from mobile payments in India. Consumers’ propensity to use new payment technologies declines with age, creating stronger incentives for businesses serving younger customers to accept these technologies. We document this pattern in the rollout of a mobile payment option by a major fintech company. A model where consumer attitudes toward technology vary by age implies that business adoption is inefficiently low, with the young bearing disproportionate welfare losses from network externalities. Jointly subsidizing transaction and adoption costs restores efficiency. Subtitle: Demographics and Technology Diffusion: Evidence from Mobile Payments. Ideas Festival 2026 | Managing Technology and Trade Disruptions: Building Resilience in a Shifting International Landscape

School of Social Sciences We are entering a new era of global trade (dis)order, shaped by powerful waves of technological and economic disruption. From generative AI transforming production and services, to tariff escalations redrawing trade routes, these shifts are reconfiguring the foundations of international commerce. They bring real opportunities—efficiency gains from emerging technologies, new markets, and innovative business models—but also serious challenges, including fragmentation, heightened uncertainty, and systemic complexity. Together, these dynamics underscore the urgent need for resilience. Bringing together diverse perspectives, this event will explore how businesses and other actors in the region can adapt to and navigate this fast-changing landscape. Key questions include: How can we better understand and prepare for emerging trends? Do these disruptions challenge our long-held assumptions? And how can actors remain resilient and agile in the face of volatility? Join us to exchange insights, build partnerships, and… Contact: socsc_seminar@smu.edu.sg. Speaker Details: Chair: , Pasha L. Operations Management Research Seminar

Area Administration As organizations adopt generative AI, its use can improve productivity but reliance can lead to atrophy of worker knowledge and skills over time. The challenge is how to incentivize human oversight and maintain long-run expertise. Using a principal-agent framework, we study optimal incentive design when workers can exert costly effort to verify and correct imperfect AI output, where effort both improves current performance and preserves expertise. A central managerial challenge is that improving AI quality makes oversight harder to motivate, since acceptable outcomes increasingly occur even when workers shirk. Consequently, profit-maximizing compensation can be non-monotonic in AI quality, skill, or return on effort, and organizations may even be better off, in terms of profitability, with worse AI systems. More subtle implications arise when skills decay with AI reliance. First, due to contracting frictions, we find that firms may (rationally) allow expertise to deteriorate by substituting higher effort from… Subtitle: Use it or Slowly Lose it: Expertise Atrophy with Organizational AI Usage. Finance Research Seminar

Area Administration We examine nonpecuniary preferences across a broad set of corporate actions using a representative sample of the U.S. population. Our core findings, based on large scale online surveys, are that (i) self-reported nonpecuniary concerns are large both for stock market investors and non-investors; (ii) concerns about the treatment of workers and CEO pay rank highest—higher than concerns about workforce diversity and fossil energy usage; (iii) moral universalism emerges as an important driver of nonpecuniary preferences. Combined, our findings provide new evidence on the importance of moral concerns as a key determinant of nonpecuniary preferences over corporate actions. Subtitle: Corporate Actions as Moral Issues. Ideas Festival 2026 | Still Worth Doing? A Public Conversation on the Future of Work

School of Social Sciences Perhaps the only thing clear about the future of work is its own uncertainty. Yet, amid economic disruption and the rise of AI, public discussion has mostly been limited to predicting available jobs and “employable” degrees. This panel shifts our attention back to the question of work and its role in social life. What will change in the everyday tasks we fulfil as workers, and what meaning should we give to such efforts? What sort of career is still worthy of human skill and emotion? How do we review a performance when labor is partly outsourced to technology? Featuring researchers from across Singapore’s universities, this panel will discuss the changes and challenges in three major aspects of work: care, creativity, and communications. In looking ahead, this panel explores not only what jobs will likely persist, but how work must and should evolve. Join us to reimagine the future of work! *Registration starts at 3.00pm. Motor-Mediated Creativity: Bridging Embodied Skill Training and Digital Expression

School of Computing and Information Systems Expressive digital drawing requires nuanced motor control, subtle variations in pressure, velocity, and rhythm that convey affect and style. While experts develop this embodied fluency through years of practice, novices struggle to produce marks that match their intentions, creating a gap between vision and execution. We propose motor-mediated creativity: treating motor training as integral to digital expression. Our system, MOTUS, instantiates this through structured practice of expressive primitives, expert-referenced feedback, and ideation prompts that encourage exploration. We report a two-stage investigation. A formative study characterized: (a) novice challenges in motor fluency, (b) examined how different feedback types, including corrective feedback, helped participants understand their mistakes, (c) how prompts, generic or embodied, support engagement with abstract expressive content. A controlled evaluation then linked fluency gains to subjective and expert ratings of expressiveness. SGRI Professorship Lecture: Does Global Insolvency Law Affect Cross-border Capital Flows?

Centre for Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia The restructuring of financially distressed multinational firms is often costly and inefficient because insolvency proceedings must be coordinated across jurisdictions. Weak coordination between domestic and foreign courts increases legal uncertainty and hampers effective restructuring. To address this problem, the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) introduced the Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency, which has been adopted by a growing number of countries, including the United States in 2005 and Singapore in 2017. This study examines how reducing legal uncertainty in global insolvency affects cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and financing. We first use the U.S. adoption of the Model Law through Chapter 15 of the Bankruptcy Code in 2005 as a benchmark setting. Using a comprehensive dataset of Chapter 15 filings from 2005–2020, we show that the law has been actively used by foreign firms, particularly those from countries with strong creditor rights and efficient bankru… Fee(s): Complimentary. Lee Kong Chian Professorship Public Lecture

Area Administration Neglected diseases disproportionately affect developing and poor countries. Privately held biopharmaceutical firms often lack adequate financial incentives to invest in drug development for these diseases. In this paper, we build a principal-agent model to help governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) manage a multilateral alliance to develop a new drug for neglected diseases. The model consists of three parties: A funding NGO with a social welfare objective; a privately held innovation specialist (innovator) and a privately held manufacturing specialist (manufacturer). We assume the innovator can invest two types of R&D efforts: one toward efficacy and safety, which creates the likelihood of drug approval by relevant regulatory authority; and the other toward manufacturability, which decreases the marginal cost of production once successful. We characterize the optimal contract structures for the NGO to incentivize the other two parties, and the condition when the NGO should induce investment in… Subtitle: Multilateral Alliances for the Development and Distribution of Drugs for Neglected Diseases.
