Finance Research Seminar
Area Administration
We examine nonpecuniary preferences across a broad set of corporate actions using a representative sample of the U.S. population. Our core findings, based on large scale online surveys, are that (i) self-reported nonpecuniary concerns are large both for stock market investors and non-investors; (ii) concerns about the treatment of workers and CEO pay rank highest—higher than concerns about workforce diversity and fossil energy usage; (iii) moral universalism emerges as an important driver of nonpecuniary preferences. Combined, our findings provide new evidence on the importance of moral concerns as a key determinant of nonpecuniary preferences over corporate actions.

Problem definition: Charitable donations are a vital source of funding for nonprofit organizations, enabling them to carry out their mission of addressing social issues and providing support to those in need. To boost contributions, third parties often donate large sums that fundraisers use to incentivize individual donations, with one-to-one matching being the most common mechanism. However, alternative designs may lead to even higher contributions. This paper investigates the effectiveness of two design choices in the context of fundraising: (i) the incentive mechanism, focusing on the two most prevalent ones (i.e. matching and gift unlock); and (ii) the solicitation mechanism, i.e. whether donations occur simultaneously or sequentially. Methodology/Results: We introduce a stylized game-theoretical model where a fundraiser decides the design choices and corresponding design parameters to maximize overall donations. Following the fundraiser's decision, donors, endowed with a certain amount of wealth, make…

Ideas Festival 2026 | Still Worth Doing? A Public Conversation on the Future of Work
School of Social Sciences
Perhaps the only thing clear about the future of work is its own uncertainty. Yet, amid economic disruption and the rise of AI, public discussion has mostly been limited to predicting available jobs and “employable” degrees. This panel shifts our attention back to the question of work and its role in social life. What will change in the everyday tasks we fulfil as workers, and what meaning should we give to such efforts? What sort of career is still worthy of human skill and emotion? How do we review a performance when labor is partly outsourced to technology?
Featuring researchers from across Singapore’s universities, this panel will discuss the changes and challenges in three major aspects of work: care, creativity, and communications. In looking ahead, this panel explores not only what jobs will likely persist, but how work must and should evolve. Join us to reimagine the future of work!
*Registration starts at 3.00pm. Light refreshment will be served during registration.

Strategy & Entrepreneurship Research Seminar
Area Administration
How should organizations manage learning dynamics? Strategy theories suggest "more-is-better"—fast, frictionless sharing enhances performance—while organizational learning theory warns that "less-is-more," as fast learning causes premature convergence. We reconcile this tension by showing that the "less-is-more" prediction depends critically on a key assumption in classic computational models: that information about agents' performance is not continuously updated. When performance information is timely, fast learning enhances exploration. The mechanism is Target Diversity: fast learning allows many individuals to rapidly reach the performance frontier, increasing the set of imitation targets. Organizations thus learn from a diverse, shifting set of targets. The implication is that organizations achieve superior performance not by restricting information or slowing learning, but by making data on choices and performance available more quickly.

Motor-Mediated Creativity: Bridging Embodied Skill Training and Digital Expression
School of Computing and Information Systems
Expressive digital drawing requires nuanced motor control, subtle variations in pressure, velocity, and rhythm that convey affect and style. While experts develop this embodied fluency through years of practice, novices struggle to produce marks that match their intentions, creating a gap between vision and execution. We propose motor-mediated creativity: treating motor training as integral to digital expression. Our system, MOTUS, instantiates this through structured practice of expressive primitives, expert-referenced feedback, and ideation prompts that encourage exploration. We report a two-stage investigation. A formative study characterized: (a) novice challenges in motor fluency, (b) examined how different feedback types, including corrective feedback, helped participants understand their mistakes, (c) how prompts, generic or embodied, support engagement with abstract expressive content. A controlled evaluation then linked fluency gains to subjective and expert ratings of expressiveness. Together, our f…

SOSS Seminar | Bastardised Republicanism: Montesquieu and the Spirit of Public Law
School of Social Sciences
What explains the eighteenth-century attraction to Montesquieu? Perhaps it was that he perfected a distinctly modern mode of moral-political thought. One where the modern world comes across as complex and liquid, productive of alienation, but which does not induce a theory that is sceptical or relativist.
Read against this background, his work reveals twin narratives of decline. One is Ancient - Rome recurs as an idealised model of civic unity and virtuous republicanism. The other is Modern - contemporary European civilisation appears expansive, unruly, and unprincipled, rendering older forms (including monarchy and classical republicanism) increasingly obsolete.
Montesquieu’s response is a pragmatic, ersatz republicanism rooted not in civic virtue but in commercial frugality - a form I term “bastardised republicanism”. England functions for him as the modern analogue of Rome: a commercial republic held together by separation of powers and the tempering effects of commerce. Taking seriously Montesquieu’s view…

SGRI Professorship Lecture: Does Global Insolvency Law Affect Cross-border Capital Flows?
Centre for Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia
The restructuring of financially distressed multinational firms is often costly and inefficient because insolvency proceedings must be coordinated across jurisdictions. Weak coordination between domestic and foreign courts increases legal uncertainty and hampers effective restructuring. To address this problem, the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) introduced the Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency, which has been adopted by a growing number of countries, including the United States in 2005 and Singapore in 2017.
This study examines how reducing legal uncertainty in global insolvency affects cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and financing. We first use the U.S. adoption of the Model Law through Chapter 15 of the Bankruptcy Code in 2005 as a benchmark setting. Using a comprehensive dataset of Chapter 15 filings from 2005–2020, we show that the law has been actively used by foreign firms, particularly those from countries with strong creditor rights and efficient bankru…

Neglected diseases disproportionately affect developing and poor countries. Privately held biopharmaceutical firms often lack adequate financial incentives to invest in drug development for these diseases. In this paper, we build a principal-agent model to help governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) manage a multilateral alliance to develop a new drug for neglected diseases. The model consists of three parties: A funding NGO with a social welfare objective; a privately held innovation specialist (innovator) and a privately held manufacturing specialist (manufacturer). We assume the innovator can invest two types of R&D efforts: one toward efficacy and safety, which creates the likelihood of drug approval by relevant regulatory authority; and the other toward manufacturability, which decreases the marginal cost of production once successful. We characterize the optimal contract structures for the NGO to incentivize the other two parties, and the condition when the NGO should induce investment in…

Startups are often confronted with opportunities to extend their core technologies into new product markets. While such moves hold the promise of creating new customer bases and hedging the risk of failure in existing pursuits, they also require expertise in unfamiliar domains which can be costly to obtain. We examine how startups’ product market entry decisions are shaped by portfolio ties - connections to other startups backed by the same venture capital investor. Portfolio ties to other startups operating in that product market can provide access to relevant expertise that should, on average, lower the barriers to entry. However, these ties can also constrain entry if investors seek to protect the market positions of the startup already operating in that market. We theorize that such protectionist action by the investor becomes more likely if the related portfolio firm’s product targeting that market is closer to commercialization. To test these ideas, we exploit the staggered release of the Cancer Genome…

'Show it, Don’t Just Say It’: The Complementary Effects of Instruction Multimodality for Software Guidance
School of Computing and Information Systems
Designing adaptive tutoring systems for software learning presents challenges in determining appropriate instructional modalities. To inform the design of such systems, we conducted an observational study of ten human teacher-student pairs (N=10), where experienced design software users taught novices two new graphic design software features through multi-step procedures. These lessons were limited to three communication channels (speech, visual annotations, and remote screen control) to mimic possible AI tutor modalities. We found that annotations complement speech with spatial precision and remote control complements it with spatial and temporal precision but both of them cause intrusion to learner agency. Teachers adaptively select modalities to balance the need for instruction progress with students' cognitive engagement and sense of digital territory ownership. Our results provide further support to the contiguity principles and the value of agency in learning, while suggesting precision-agency trade-off…

SOSS Seminar | The Role of Graduate Education in the Rising Wage Premium for Professional and Managerial Occupations, 1980-2019
School of Social Sciences
A large part of the rise in U.S. wage inequality over recent decades comes from a widening gap between professional/managerial (PM) and other occupations (NPM). We examine the trend in this gap from 1980 to 2019 highlighting the role of graduate degrees. Using a decomposition-of-change technique, we show that the increased gap between NPM and PM in the proportion of their workers with graduate degrees explains approximately 20% of the growth in the wage premium for having a PM occupation. We find that wage returns rose modestly for having a BA/BS degree and dramatically for having a graduate degree. Regarding effects of education on holding a PM job, returns to having a BA/BS went down while returns to having a graduate degree stayed high. We discuss how our findings fit predictions from economists’ model of skill-biased technological change, a broader perspective positing the growth of the knowledge economy, and a sociological theory positing increasing Credentialism.

SOSS Seminar | AI is Not a Natural Monopoly
School of Social Sciences
Economists and antitrust scholars have recently warned that the AI industry may be a natural monopoly. In support of this claim, they have argued that the AI industry shares key features with natural monopolies of the past: First, like railroads, AI has high fixed and low marginal costs. That is, training a frontier AI is expensive, but asking it a question is cheap. Next, like social media, AI companies will benefit from network effects. The more users a company has, the more training data they can collect. This leads to better models, then more users, and so on. Finally, some antitrust scholars say, the AI industry is already too concentrated. Today, the market for frontier AI systems contains only three–maybe three and a half–players. Appearances here are, however, deceiving. This essay argues that the AI industry is not a natural monopoly. Nor is it plagued by the problems of market concentration today. To show why, the essay identifies three structural features of AI essential for understanding the indus…

[CANCELLED] STARI Public Workshop - Missing Trader Fraud in VAT and GST Systems and the Associated Criminal Aspects
Centre for Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia
VAT and GST systems are a reliable source of revenue for most countries in the world. Because large groups of entrepreneurs need to be able to apply the rules associated with these taxes relatively easily, there is a need to keep these indirect taxes simple. On the other hand, various forms of fraud are forcing legislators to take additional measures that are at odds with the need to keep indirect taxes simple.
In our lecture, we will focus on the ways in which EU legislators and courts are attempting to curb these forms of fraud, in addition to providing a brief overview of common fraud patterns. In addition, we will discuss an initiative taken in 2021 to establish a European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) that prosecutes VAT fraud/Missing Trader Fraud cases in EU states. The idea is to compare the initiatives that are and are being developed in the EU with those in Singapore during a panel discussion. This will provide a good idea of which control methods (or combinations of control methods) are most ef…

MPA Professorship in Maritime Business Research Seminar
Area Administration
In this lecture, SMU's Recipient of the MPA Professorship in Maritime Business, Martin Jes Iversen examines the emerging trajectories for research and education within the field of maritime business. The discussion builds on Iversen’s work on maritime digitalization and strategic development, with particular emphasis on the implications of increasing technological connectivity.
The growing cognitive capabilities of digital systems—especially artificial intelligence—pose significant consequences not only for the operational models of shipping companies but also for the pedagogical approaches and research paradigms employed within business schools. Iversen argues that, in parallel with rapid technological advancements, maritime research and education are uniquely positioned to address grand societal challenges. Moreover, these developments create new opportunities to broaden educational engagement across age groups, professional backgrounds, and cultural contexts, ultimately strengthening the intellectual and p…
