Balancing Efficiency and Developer Needs for Sustainable AI-Supported Software Development
School of Computing and Information Systems
Large Language Models have moved software development into a human–AI collaborative ecosystem, delivering immediate gains but raising a long-term question: can the practice be sustained as it scales? This dissertation frames that question around three recurring costs — machine computation, developer effort, and human oversight — and presents eight contributions, each of which isolates one cost, makes it measurable, and either eliminates it or exposes the risk it creates. Part I redesigns code representation for AI readers: removing human-oriented formatting cuts 24.6% of input tokens with no loss in generation quality, while SimPy and Token Sugar together remove over 22% more, all reversibly. Part II changes when the model is invoked and how its output reaches the developer, through utility-based request filtering (FrugalCoder), instruction-aware fill-in-the-middle (IFIM), and overlapping generation with execution (Eager). Part III measures what delegation already costs, demonstrating end-to-end compromise of…

Finance Research Seminar
Area Administration
We study how resolving local land-use uncertainty affects household reinvestment. Using a nationwide panel linking single-family properties to newly established conservation easements, we compare properties near easement boundaries to similar properties farther away. An event-study design with property and easement-by-year fixed effects reveals that properties within 100 meters of a newly formed easement experience a 1.5--2\% increase in assessed improvement value relative to properties 100--500 meters away, with effects attenuating with distance. This is mirrored by real investment behavior: proximate properties are about 1.6 percentage points more likely to exhibit changes in living area. Our findings constitute evidence for environmental certainty as a key driver of homeowner investment and indicate local spillovers from conservation.

STARI Lunchtime Seminar - The Role And Perspective of Environmental Taxes in Sustainable Development and the Green Economy
Centre for Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia
By 2050, the European Union aims to become the first climate-neutral continent in the world. To this end, the concept of the green economy has been developed, i.e. an economy that improves human wellbeing and social justice while significantly reducing environmental risks. It is also an important component in achieving the overarching goal of sustainable development. To achieve the desired goals, this concept requires extensive financial instruments to stimulate private investment and business activity. One possible solution is environmental taxes. They have a dual function: firstly, to increase tax revenues, and secondly, to change consumer purchasing habits. Growing environmental awareness is pushing policymakers to pursue sustainable economic practices with the dual aim of combining economic efficiency with reduced environmental impacts. Therefore, the main objective of this seminar is to:present the importance and role of environmental taxes in relation to sustainable development and the green economy; …

Finance Research Seminar
Area Administration
This paper develops a theory of positive and negative liquidity premia. Liquid assets facilitate decentralized exchange, but as their supply increases, their nonpecuniary yield turns negative–liquidity becomes inconvenient at the margin despite its positive social value. The model generates several empirical regularities regarding the liquidity premia on US Treasuries: they initially decline with asset supply, turn negative above a threshold, and positive and negative premia can coexist. Equilibrium may exhibit ex post heterogeneity in asset portfolios, with constrained and unconstrained agents coexisting endogenously. The socially optimal real return on money exceeds the Friedman rule.

STARI Lunchtime Seminar - GloBE as a Regular Corporate Income Tax System: Tax Base and Subject
Centre for Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia
This article investigates the Global Anti-Base Erosion Model Rules (GloBE Rules) not as a minimum tax but as a regular corporate income tax system. Drawing on the framework of analysis set out in the author's 2024 book, Corporate Tax Law, this article compares the GloBE Rules with the features of four archetypal corporate income tax systems—those of China, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States—with a focus on the first of three artificialities involving corporations: the artificiality of a corporation as an income-deriving subject. The article considers how entities subject to the GloBE Rules are identified and classified, examines specialist tax base issues arising from the artificial nature of the subject matter, and analyses the tax treatment of the subject entity's income. The analysis reveals that while many features of the GloBE Rules are broadly familiar to students of regular corporate income tax systems, a number of peculiarities emerge, including the unusually broad scope of entity cover…

STARI Lunchtime Seminar - “Home-office” Permanent Establishments: An Australian Case Study
Centre for Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia
Cross-border home working challenges the conventional concept of permanent establishment, which developed around identifiable commercial premises. Digital technology now permits individuals to perform sustained and economically significant functions for an enterprise in a jurisdiction where the enterprise has no formally established office or branch. The OECD’s 2025 Update to the OECD Model Tax Convention introduces a revised approach to this issue. Working from a home for less than 50 per cent of total working time will generally not create a place of business. Reaching that threshold does not itself establish a permanent establishment; the wider circumstances, including whether the individual’s presence commercially facilitates the enterprise’s business in the host State, remain important. Using Australia as a case study, the discussion considers how this approach interacts with domestic law, tax treaties, withholding taxes and profit-attribution rules. It evaluates when sustained home working should establ…

[Agentic Workflow] Fundamentals: Web vs Code vs Cowork
Library
A practical orientation for anyone who has used ChatGPT or Claude but isn't sure how Claude.ai, Claude Code, Codex, and Cowork actually differ, or what "agentic AI" even means. No technical background required.
Most people have tried a chat-based AI at some point. But the landscape has expanded quickly: there are now chat interfaces, coding agents, and desktop agents, each serving very different purposes. Without a clear mental model, it is hard to know which tool to reach for, or to follow the rest of this workshop series without feeling lost.
This session gives participants a practical map of the AI tool landscape and introduces the core idea of "agentic" AI: systems that don't just respond to a prompt, but plan, act, observe, and iterate. A live comparison demo makes the difference concrete rather than abstract, and a decision framework helps participants immediately apply what they have learned to their own work.
**Participants are highly recommended to attend this workshop first, before the rest of th…

[Agentic Workflow] Vibe-coding & Version Control in your Codex/Claude Code
Library
Describe what you want, let AI write the code, and keep your work safe with version control. A practical session on using Codex or Claude Code to generate working scripts for research tasks, paired with just enough Git to make your work reproducible and recoverable.
Most researchers don’t need to become programmers to benefit from code. With Codex CLI and Claude Code, you describe what you want in plain language and the AI produces a working script. The gap between “I have an idea for this analysis” and “I have a running script” has never been smaller, and the barrier to crossing it has never been lower.
But generated code without version control is fragile. This workshop pairs vibe-coding with Git basics so participants leave with a workflow that is reproducible and recoverable. By the end, participants can iterate on AI-generated code confidently, knowing they can roll back if something breaks and share their work with colleagues.
Please note that subscription to Claude/ChatGPT is required if you wan…

[Agentic Workflow] LLM-Assisted Text Analysis: From Open-Ended Responses to Structured Insights
Library
A hands-on workshop on using large language models to classify short text data, such as survey responses, feedback comments, or research abstracts. Participants will learn how to create a simple codebook, use it to guide LLM classification, and check the results through human review. No coding or machine learning background is required.
Researchers and professional staff often work with short, open-ended text that needs to be organised into meaningful categories. Manual coding can be slow, while machine learning approaches may require technical expertise.
This workshop introduces a practical human-in-the-loop workflow: define categories, build a simple codebook, prompt the LLM, review the output, and refine the approach. The focus is on using AI in a structured, transparent, and low-barrier way.

[Agentic Workflow] Build your own "advanced" workflow with MCP and Skills
Library
From prompts to pipelines: learn how MCP connects AI to your tools and data, and how skill files turn your best workflows into something repeatable and shareable. By the end of this session, you will have built and tested a skill file for a real task in your own research or professional work.
A standalone chat session ends when you close the window. MCP (Model Context Protocol) changes that: it is the open standard that lets an AI agent connect to external tools, file systems, databases, and services in real time. For researchers, this means an AI that can read your reference manager, pull data from a spreadsheet, or update a shared document, without switching tabs.
Skill files are the other half of this picture. They encode a workflow, its instructions, and its context into a structured, reusable document that any team member can pick up and run. Together, MCP and skills move AI from something you consult to something you configure, turning individual proficiency into a team resource.
