[ENVS] Our Probable Futures: Risk, Resiliency and Decision-Making in a Changing Climate
Climate change is here, and communities, industries, and businesses are confronted with more frequent and intense heat waves, volatile winter weather, and unfamiliar patterns of precipitation. These risks are exacerbated by the fact that everything in our society, from the built environment to cultural practices around the world, emerged and were designed around a past climate that no longer exists. As the global atmosphere rapidly approaches 1.5°C of warming and carbon emissions continue to rise, how can we navigate this reality, manage growing physical risks, and create systems, practices, and structures that are prepared for the future? In this session, Alison will explore these questions, learn how to apply world-class climate model data and maps, and build the climate literacy that is essential for everyone living and working in our society today.

Charmaine Lee: Awaken the Dragon / USA 50 States Tour
Charmaine Lee is a New York-based vocalist and electronics artist whose work explores the extremes of presence, intimacy, and noise. Known for her fierce improvisational approach and use of extended vocal techniques, she has collaborated with artists including Ikue Mori, Conrad Tao, and the JACK Quartet. Her solo sets use feedback, vocal fragments, and real-time processing to create live compositions that are as fragile as they are ferocious. Charmaine Lee’s solo performances are visceral sonic rituals. Using voice, feedback, and electronics, she sculpts volatile, deeply embodied soundscapes that slip between intimacy and intensity. Drawing from noise, improvisation, and extended vocal technique, her sets are unpredictable, immersive, and alive with risk.

Pluralism and Peace: A Qawwali Mehfil
Pluralism and Peace: A Qawwali Mehfil
Thursday, November 6, 6:30 p.m. Goddard Chapel
We are delighted to announce that the legendary Ustad Fareed Ayaz and Abu Mohammad will be performing qawwali at Tufts on November 6--exactly a year after their sons (and grandson) electrified a packed Distler Hall. Qawwali is a Sufi devotional voice and instrumental musical form which this group has perfected. The brilliance of this group of qawwals lies in their rigorous classical training and the breadth of poetic repertoire. The qawwals move effortlessly between and among several languages and traditions across centuries, allowing for a fascinating inventiveness, rich in poetic and spiritual symbolism. This event is free and open to the public. We are not requiring, but strongly recommending, registering for the event. Save the Date, too, for a special Lunch and Learn on Sufi poetry with Associate Professor of History Modhumita Roy and Muslim Chaplain Khan Shairani on Wednesday, November 5 at Noon! Digital Scholarship Conversations: Piloting AI-Assisted Captioning for Tufts Digital Library Collections
The Digital Scholarship Conversations series is a monthly brown bag hosted by Tisch Library. Each conversation will focus on a different topic, helping us share ideas and build community around the intersection of digital technology and our research and teaching.
Tisch Library’s Digital Initiatives department has been experimenting with workflows using OpenAI’s Whisper to create captions and transcripts for audio and video materials in Tufts Digital Library. While many A/V items have commercially prepared captions, many of our older items do not, making them less accessible. We will describe our methodology and the benefits and drawbacks to using Whisper, as well as ideas for future improvements.
Nicholas (Nick) Homenda is head of digital initiatives at Tisch Library, where he manages digitization and digital repository services. He formerly worked in librarian positions at Indiana University Bloomington and the University of South Carolina. In a prior career, Nick was an orchestral clarinetist.

Book Talk with Inna Leykin: Caring Like a State
Join us on November 17 for a conversation with Inna Leykin, discussing her new book, Caring Like a State: The Politics of Russia's Demographic Crisis.
The post-Soviet Russian state is haunted by the fear of not having enough people. Despite its well-publicized pronatalist campaigns, Russia’s declining birth rates and rising mortality rates since the 1990s cast doubt on the state's ability to care for its population effectively. In this ethnography, anthropologist Inna Leykin examines the post Soviet Russian state's efforts and failures in population care.
Inna Leykin is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Political Science, and Communication at The Open University of Israel. Trained as a cultural anthropologist, she studies the cultures of intellectual expertise and policymaking, the cultural significance of statistical and demographic knowledge, postsocialist statecraft, and emerging practices of the self in contemporary Russia. She has recently embarked on new research focusing on the…

[ENVS] How Much Sun is Enough? Renewable Electricity Strategies for Higher Ed—and The Science Behind Them
Tufts recently entered into an agreement with a solar farm in Texas, marking a significant step in the university’s path toward carbon neutrality. But what are the real climate and financial benefits of buying solar power from across the country—and how do we know? In this talk, sustainability director Tina Woolston and physics professor Roger Tobin explore the renewable electricity options available to universities, how energy markets and carbon accounting shape decision-making, and what the science behind solar energy generation reveals about where and how these projects deliver. Together, they’ll unpack the strategy, assumptions, and implications of Tufts’ solar farm agreement—and what it means for institutions striving to meet climate goals.

From Particle Physics to Innovative Imaging Scanners: Lecture with Fulbright Scholar José María Benlloch
Fulbright scholar José María Benlloch will summarize the new technologies in diagnostic imaging that are being developed by the lecturer and his group. The new techniques tend to democratize the use of medical imaging and therapy so that they can be extended to the entire world population, in line with the objectives of the World Health Organization. Low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), together with post-processing methods based on non-generative artificial intelligence (AI), is making it possible to obtain quality images of the human body using portable equipment with permanent magnets. Such scanners can be used for the diagnosis and screening of numerous diseases at a significantly lower cost than conventional high-field equipment. The advent of new drugs against Alzheimer's might trigger the development of brain positron emission tomography (PET) dedicated equipment for diagnosing and monitoring the disease. Whole-body PET needs to reduce its costs substantially to be used universally. However,…

Register (In-Person Only)
How have centuries-old regional differences brought American democracy to the brink of collapse? Spiritual Diasporas: A Performance Ceremony + Symposium
Spiritual Diasporas: A Performance Ceremony + Symposium is a series of week-long embodied gatherings that draw on performance ritual and spiritual ceremony to cultivate care, agency, and worldbuilding through which we experience wholeness. How might we tend to the spirits of this land and of our kin through ceremony? How do we invoke and reckon with entangled colonial histories and their continuations through communal stories, songs, and rituals?
By framing these gatherings as “spiritual diasporas,” we gesture towards the fragmentations and frictions across multiple experiences of migration, not as lack but as a productive portal for creation. By activating the body as an instrument to reclaim and reconnect with spirituality, we cultivate life-affirming power to come together to be in embodied presence with one another and our ancestors. These intimate gatherings include artist workshops, performance ceremony, devised performance workshop, talking circle, and dance party across Wednesday December 3 through…

[ENVS] In Thoreau's Time: Temporal Imagination as Collective Resource
This lecture explores Henry David Thoreau’s engagement with time as an environmental, personal, and political dimension of experience. While Thoreau is often celebrated for his environmental imagination, this talk focuses on his temporal imagination—his effort to resist the thin, linear time of industrial capitalism and reclaim a richer, cyclical sense of duration rooted in the natural world. At the heart of this inquiry is Thoreau’s late-life project, the Kalendar, a series of charts tracking seasonal phenomena across years, designed to reveal patterns of recurrence and change in the more-than-human world. The speaker argues that Thoreau’s attention to time and seasonality offers a powerful model for rethinking our relationship to the worlds we occupy and create.

This ritual is a way to use the body, mind and spirit to encounter and heal and transform.”
