salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu
This exhibition is on view September 13, 2025–June 14, 2026. Visit umfa.utah.edu for Museum hours.
Adama Delphine Fawundu is a New York-based artist of Mende, Krim, Bamileke, and Bubi descent. Her practice embodies ancestral memory across space and time, reconnecting places, objects, plants, animals, and spirits of the global African diaspora.
The works in this exhibition were made with a process that Fawundu calls “kpoto patchwok,” a combination of the Mende word for gathering fruits and nuts for communal nourishment (kpoto) and the Krio word for piecing together textiles (patchwok). By drawing together materials from Congo, Brazil, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Malta, Cuba, and the United States, Fawundu stitches together a collective history of the African diaspora that imagines a more interconnected future. Her work is displayed in conversation with objects from the UMFA’s African art collection, which were selected by the artist for their resonance with her practice.

To Be a God, featuring Little Moon [U Arts Pass Event]
Presented with 801 Salon
Our Stage Door series continues this season with Little Moon, an indie folk rock band from Springville, UT that won the NPR Tiny Desk Contest in 2023. Little Moon is the project (and childhood nickname) of singer-songwriter Emma Hardyman. Her soaring vocals and rich arrangements are hallmarks of a sound that falls somewhere between a Zelda soundtrack and Vashti Bunyan. In this immersive concert experience, she’s joined by Bly Wallentine, Bridget Jackson, Chris Shemwell, Grace Johnson, and Nathan Hardyman. As SLUG Magazine put it, “Little Moon is like a warm hug from a good friend or feeling the sunlight blush your face.... pure emotional processing and ecstasy.”

Art + Cinema: Northern Lights
In partnership with the University of Utah Department of Film & Media Arts, the UMFA is excited to host a special screening of Northern Lights (1978), the critically acclaimed film directed by John Hanson and Rob Nilsson.
Winner of the 1979 Camera d'Or, Northern Lights, a unique work of political cinema from the late 1970s, dramatizes small North Dakotan wheat farmers' political struggle against the bankers and railroad magnates pushing them into bankruptcy. Two young lovers get swept up in the turmoil surrounding the formation of the populist Nonpartisan League in the mid-1910's. Shot on location in black-and-white 16mm with a cast of nonprofessional actors, this deeply moving, politically committed film is a masterpiece of American independent cinema. The 4K digital restoration of Northern Lights was created by IndieCollect and Metropolis Post in collaboration with directors John Hanson and Rob Nilsson.

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu

Every First Wednesday | 11:00–11:30 | Free
Looking for a free family activity in Salt Lake City? Admission to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts is always free every first Wednesday of the month, and now the day is extra special. Bring your youngest art appreciators to the UMFA for storytime, fine art, and hands-on activities in the galleries!
Gather in the Museum lobby and follow arts educators into the galleries to explore unique works of art, read a story, and create a simple, kid-friendly art project inspired by the art on view and the story! There will be new stories and activities every month, so we hope you’ll join us for a new “once upon a time” every first Wednesday.

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu

A Hilarious Love Letter to Theatre… and a Delightful Disaster, There’s no business like show business? Often hailed as one of the greatest farces ever written, Noises Off sees onstage antics collide with backstage hijinx—in a zany tribute to “theatre-people” everywhere. And as hard as it may be to believe, Noises Off has not been seen at PTC for nearly 20 years! Join us this holiday season for a healthy dose of slamming doors, backstage drama, and a rogue plate of sardines. LIVE/WIRED [U Arts Pass Event]
LIVE/WIRED transforms the Film & Media Arts Building into a dynamic laboratory where live cinema and AI-generated films collide.
During this one-night-only event, Film & Media Arts students present hybrid works that blur the boundaries between human and machine creativity. Audiences move freely through the building, where they encounter performances and AI experiences in a variety of spaces.
The event explores questions central to our technological moment: What happens when live performance and pre-recorded digital media meet in real time? How does the use of AI challenge traditional notions of originality and authenticity? How does our impression of live performance change in a post-generative-AI creative landscape?
LIVE/WIRED positions the Film & Media Arts Building not as a container for finished works but as an active participant—its infrastructure of rooms, screens, cables, and technology made visible and audible, revealing the usually hidden systems that enable contemporary film and media art product…

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu

This brilliantly-crafted comedy delivers non-stop laughter and classic theatrical mayhem!

By drawing together materials from Congo, Brazil, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Malta, Cuba, and the United States, Fawundu stitches together a collective history of the African diaspora that imagines a more interconnected future. Her work is displayed in conversation with objects from the UMFA’s African art collection, which were selected by the artist for their resonance with her practice.

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu
Her work is displayed in conversation with objects from the UMFA’s African art collection, which were selected by the artist for their resonance with her practice.

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu

Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez [U Arts Pass Event]
At first glance, the paths of Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez might seem to follow a similar rhythm—two Havana-born musical prodigies who found their voices early and followed their passion to the USA. Dig a little deeper, and you’ll discover two stories as unique and vibrant as the music they create.
Together, they represent two brilliant threads of the Cuban musical tapestry and when they meet, sparks fly. Both Grammy-nominated artists, Rodriguez and Martinez bring Cuban roots to the global stage, each blending the sounds of their homeland with influences from jazz.
“The mind-melding between the two is sublime…it’s a joy to hear their visions combine” - NPR
Get ready for a night of rhythm, passion, and world-class artistry like no other.

A Heartfelt New Musical About the Power of a Single Moment, Mike is having a very big day. He’s been holding onto a secret for awhile, and today his secret is totally coming out. It’s also a big day for the country – huge decisions are being made all over, and at the center of it is one family teetering on the brink of…everything. Ten Brave Seconds is a bright and vital new musical, infused with infectious pop melodies and rooted in a big-hearted examination of one day in the life of a kid, a family, and a community stepping bravely from the dark unknown into the daylight together.
