Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd (exhibition)

Libraries “Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd” explores how the typewriter reshaped storytelling, literature, and art over two centuries. The exhibition brings together diverse works – from a draft of “The Wiz” and a first edition of “Dracula” to protest flyers and Tim Youd’s retyped diptychs – showing the typewriter as a force for creativity, cultural change, and political resistance. Drawing on Rose Library archives and Youd’s art, it traces the typewriter’s impact on the 20th century and beyond. Multiple typewriters from different decades will be on display as well. Youd will give live performances at the typewriter from 1–6 p.m. every Sunday-Friday, Sept. 19 – Oct. 29. The exhibition and the performances are free and open to the public. Live musical performances will be added one day a week in the near future as Youd types; calendar entries will be updated when that happens. Exhibitions dates: Aug. 27 – Dec. 20, 2025. Weekend hours vary; closed on holidays. For details, see… University Event Topic: Academic Calendar. Alumni. Arts. Campus Life & Student Orgs. College. Community. Faculty. Graduate. Humanities. The Ethics of Inspiration: Honoring Ancestors and Influences

University Events One of the Center's aims is to bring thoughtful people into conversation, so they talk through their efforts to be conscientious in a particular domain. This event arose from the thought that "appropriation" is a term to mark a failure of appropriately acknowledging one's creative sources, where "appropriate" might involve showing respect for, being generous with, even honoring the source, whether a person or a tradition. The founding question for this event is thus: Beyond honest credits, how does one acknowledge, even honor the artists and cultural traditions that any artist inevitably relies upon in generating their own work? University Event Topic: Arts. Community. Humanities. Religion & Ethics. Purpose Project. Department / Organization: Center for Ethics. And the quartet’s ongoing Kronos 50 For The Future initiative aims to help young amateur and early-c… Event Open To: All (Public). Cost: Free. Quantum seminar by the Chemistry, Physics, and Math departments

Colloquia Quantum Monte Carlo for Correlated Electrons, Understanding and predicting the behavior of strongly correlated electrons in materials and molecules remains one of the central challenges of modern quantum science. The exponentially growing complexity of many-electron problems renders traditional reductionist approaches insufficient. Among the theoretical and computational tools developed to address these challenges, determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) has emerged as one of the most widely used unbiased numerical methods. This tutorial is designed for non-experts and will provide a concise yet accessible introduction to DQMC. It will begin with the fundamental concepts of fermionic many-body physics and the motivation for numerical approaches. The core idea of DQMC—the auxiliary-field decomposition—will then be introduced, followed by an overview of the stochastic framework underpinning Markov-chain Monte Carlo sampling. The tutorial will conclude with examples of applications to experimentally relevant… University Event Topic: Science. Seminars & Workshops. School: Emory College. JWJI Colloquium featuring L.S. Kim

University Events “Maid for Television: Race, Class, Gender, and a Representational Economy” The figure of the racialized domestic in American television engages viewers in a mode of perception about race, family, and social and individual status. Each instance of the servant character marks a particular historical circumstance through which the meaning of race is rendered. MAID FOR TELEVISION examines race, class, and gender relations as embodied in a long history of television servants from 1950 to the turn of the millennium. Although they reside at the visual peripheries, these figures are integral to the idealized American family. "Fragments And" Art Exhibition: An Exhibition Of Work By Lynne Huffer

Arts at Emory "Fragments And" An Exhibition Of Work By Lynne Huffer  Free event, open to public, register here: https://www.thebakeryatlanta.com/exhibitions Lynne Huffer’s gallery installation of fragments on zigzagging lines is conceived as a living collage, inviting viewers into an experimental, collaborative, immersive practice. Created as an installation for survival, Fragments And accompanies Huffer’s hybrid-style collage book, These Survivals: Autobiography of an Extinction, available for purchase at the exhibit. When thinking of extinction, we fall into a sense of planetary time; the feeling that all is both individual and collective, inviting solitary practices amidst communal life. In that spirit, the exhibit invites its viewers to contribute to the installation by making their own fragments to add to the lines. JWJI Colloquium featuring Patricia Akhimie

University Events Talk Title: Extra-Illustrating Othello In this talk, Dr. Patricia Akhimie examines the politics and impact of illustration in editions of Shakespeare’s Othello. While Shakespeare’s works are often accompanied by illustrations, many editions of Othello have been “extra-illustrated” with images added after publication. Dr. Akhimie explores how these visual choices—through cropping, captioning, and positioning—shape readers’ interpretations and reveal assumptions about race, gender, and audience. Focusing on images that perpetuate or resist harmful stereotypes, she considers how fantastical and othered depictions of Blackness and women rehearse some of the play’s most damaging messages, including racist caricature, Black pain, and violence against women. Ultimately, the talk asks: how might illustration not only reinforce but also challenge the play’s highly visual and troubling language around race? University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. Film Screening of Landfall directed by Cecilia Aldarondo

University Events Film Screening of Landfall directed by Cecilia Aldarondo Hosted by Professor Mariya Vlasova 6:30 PM Humanities 202 Through shard-like glimpses of everyday life in post-Hurricane María Puerto Rico, LANDFALL is a cautionary tale for our times. Set against the backdrop of protests that toppled the US colony's governor in 2019, the film offers a prismatic portrait of collective trauma and resistance. While the devastation of María attracted a great deal of media coverage, the world has paid far less attention to the storm that preceded it: a 72-billion-dollar debt crisis crippling Puerto Rico well before the winds and waters hit. LANDFALL examines the kinship of these two storms-one environmental, the other economic-juxtaposing competing utopian visions of recovery. Featuring intimate encounters with Puerto Ricans as well as the newcomers flooding the island, LANDFALL reflects on a question of contemporary global relevance: when the world falls apart, who do we become? Runtime: 1 hour 31 minutes. University Event Topic: Community. Special Event. School: Oxford College. Department / Organization: Oxford College. Building/Room: Humanities Hall - Oxford. Cost: Free. Carlos Reads: I Am Still With You

Michael C. Carlos Museum After years of living in New York, author Emmanuel Iduma tells the story of his return to Nigeria. He traveled home with an elusive mission: to learn the fate of his uncle Emmanuel, his namesake, who disappeared in the Nigerian Civil War in the late 1960s. A conflict that left so many families broken, the war remains at the margins of the history books, almost taboo to discuss. To find answers, Iduma stopped in city after city reconnecting with relatives dear and distant, to probe their memories, prowling university libraries to furtively photocopy illicit books, and visiting half-abandoned monuments along the highway. Perhaps, he realized, if he could understand how his father grieved the loss of a brother in the war, he might learn how to grieve his late father in turn.     Led by TK Smith, curator of the Arts of Africa and the Africa Diaspora, participants will discuss Iduma’s story of family history and legacy, and all the questions the dead leave unanswered. How much of his identity is wrapped up in this… Event Location: Board Room. Department / Organization: Carlos Museum. Membership Link: https://carlos.emory.edu/join. Film Screening of Memories of a Penitent Heart directed by Cecilia Aldarondo

University Events Film Screening of Memories of a Penitent Heart directed by Cecilia Aldarondo Hosted by Professor Mariya Vlasova 6:30 PM Humanities 201 Memories of a Penitent Heart is an American documentary film that premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. Written and directed by Cecilia Aldarondo, the film follows her personal journey to learn more about her late uncle, Miguel Dieppa, an aspiring actor and playwright who died of an AIDS-related illness when she was just six years old, having met him only once. The project began when Aldarondo received a box of old family home videos from her mother, which included rare footage of Miguel. Curious about his life and the circumstances surrounding his death, she began a search for his former partner, known only to her as Robert. She ultimately locates him, now a Roman Catholic priest under the name Father Aquin. You Were My First Boyfriend directed by Cecilia Aldarondo

University Events You Were My First Boyfriend directed by Cecilia Aldarondo Hosted by Professor Vlasova 1:00 PM - Humanities 202 What if you could rewrite your adolescence? In this high school reunion movie turned inside out, filmmaker Aldarondo embarks on a fantastical quest to reconcile her tortured teen years. She revisits some of her most formative -- and at times cringeworthy -- childhood experiences, tracking down old crushes and reenacting visceral memories of youthful humiliation and desire, at times playing the role of her younger self and casting teenagers to play the kids in her life who still haunt her. Oscillating between present and past, humor and heartbreak, YOU WERE MY FIRST BOYFRIEND is a hybrid documentary that takes seriously the power of adolescence and the way time impacts memories, exploring what it means to grow up and make peace with the drama of our teenage trauma. Board of Education, this work examines how schooling institutionalized ruling ideologies while also providing space for contestation and resistance.
