In this first of the two McDonald lectures, Coakley will compare the theories of William James, Ernst Troeltsch and Michel de Certeau, and reflect on what aspects of their work are still important in today’s context. University Events Docta - Graffiti Artist Exhibition Hosted by Dr. Ndiaye Thursday, October 16, 5:30 pm, Tarbutton Porch Docta is a graffiti artist of Senegalese origin, real father of African graffiti, he is one of the precursors of this urban art in West Africa. From the characters to the lettering, Docta does not let go anything. He combines wild style, bubble, 3D, and African masks under a colored atmosphere and a subliminal artistic technique with strong messages that speak to all generations. Between Docta and graffiti it’s a love story which started in the 90s to last forever as today a means of expression that speaks to the oppressed people, to the voiceless, to the generations sacrificed by the policies but also an awareness sheet on the price of conscience, dignity and human rights. ENVS Seminar: Jonathon Keats

University Events ““Imagining Otherwise: Environmental Ethics, Art, and Alternative Futures" Jonathon Keats is a globally recognized conceptual artist and experimental philosopher whose provocative body of work challenges conventional boundaries between art, science, ethics, and public imagination. At a moment when dominant responses to ecological crises are constrained by technocratic or market-based logics, Keats will invite us to reimagine what counts as knowledge, responsibility, and possibility in environmental futures. His projects, ranging from photosynthetic democracy and urban symbiosis to interspecies timekeeping, have been exhibited at leading museums and featured in outlets such as Nature, The Atlantic, and The New York Times. Keats’ work exemplifies the kind of radical interdisciplinarity that Emory seeks to cultivate. University Event Topic: Academics. Campus Life & Student Orgs. College. Community. Diversity. Faculty. RSVP via the link below. Email Rebecca Rubenstein for more information.Abstract: This chapter explores the changing political economy of the port of Veracruz from the end of the seventeenth century until the beginnings of the eighteenth century. Interconnecting with the previous chapter of the dissertation—which argues that Black women moved to Veracruz in large numbers and were able to occupy prominent (expensive) properties in the center of the city in the 1650s until the 1680s—this chapter investigates the significant drop in status and economic opportunity that Black women experienced from 1690 until 1745. I argue this shift happened for several key reasons, including the changing infrastructure of the port, the pirate raid of 1683, the increased militia… University Event Topic: Academics. Humanities. JWJI Colloquium featuring Julian Wamble

University Events Talk Title: We Choose You: How Black Voters Decide Which Candidates to Support In this talk, Dr. Julian Wamble draws from his forthcoming book We Choose You (Cambridge University Press) to examine the sophisticated process of Black voter candidate selection. Challenging the common assumption that Black voters automatically support Black politicians, Dr. Wamble explores the broader considerations—such as partisanship, gender, and perceptions of personal sacrifice—that shape electoral decision-making. Using original experimental research with Black respondents, Dr. Wamble demonstrates that Black voters prioritize candidates who demonstrate a commitment to advancing the community’s interests, regardless of race. By complicating conventional views of identity and representation, We Choose You provides a powerful new framework for understanding how Black voters evaluate candidates and how identity, sacrifice, and accountability intersect in American politics. Dr. Jamie Lee Kucinskas: "Loyalty Traps and Democratic Backsliding Under the First Trump Administration"

History Sponsor: Department of Sociology. Co-sponsors: The Hightower Fund, the Department of History, and the Department of Philosophy. Federal employees became ensnared in intractable ethical traps, caught between their commitment to nonpartisan public service and the expectation of compliance with political directives. CMBC LUNCH | N Apurva Ratan Murty and Jared Medina "To Predict or To Explain"

CMBC To Predict or To Explain, RSVP requiredWhat is even the point of our science? Is it to build models that predict what brains and minds will do even if we don’t fully understand how, or is it to explain the inner workings of the mind and brain, even if our models fall short of accurate predictions or practical mental health benefits. In this debate-styled meeting, Jared Medina will argue for explanation as the soul of science. Without causal, interpretable, mechanistic accounts, we’re just playing with high-tech models and curve-fitting. For him the goal of our science is about generating understanding in human interpretable terms. On the opposing side, Apurva Ratan Murty will champion prediction as the only reliable test of scientific understanding. If your theory can’t predict new data, it has limited value. Models that generalize, however messy or uninterpretable, are the real engines of discovery and measure of progress. This brings us to the core of the conflict. Is prediction sufficient for… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. Department / Organization: Center for Mind Brain and Culture. 2025 Digital Equities Lecture: "Touch, Access, and the Digital Archive"

University Events The digital humanities is today overwhelmingly visual. Even as DH rightly boasts its achievements in dramatically increasing access to and analysis of cultural material, the field has also inadvertently narrowed our sensory access to information. We must add new dimensions to a field structured predominately by the flat screen. This talk takes up touch as a means of complicating the governing logic of many notions of access—that information can be translated directly between the senses. As an epistemological intervention, a multisensory approach promises new ways to address sensorial history and to engage people’s diverse sensory abilities and experiences—past, present, and future. As an ethical intervention, it emphasizes our responsibility to evaluate carefully the structures of digital accessibility and to increase access for all. This talk is the product of collaborative work undertaken especially with David Weimer (Newberry Library) and with the Perkins School for the Blind. JWJI Colloquium featuring Nicole Yadon

University Events Talk Title: The Politics of Skin Tone Research shows that differences in skin tone are linked with significant differences in life experiences. On average, African Americans with darker skin have lower wages, less wealth, worse health outcomes, and more negative criminal justice experiences than lighter-skinned Africans Americans. Do these experiences influence political identities and attitudes? Drawing on 100 in-depth interviews and evidence from multiple surveys and a survey experiment, The Politics of Skin Tone investigates this question. Yadon conceptualizes skin tone as one facet of the multidimensional construct of race which powerfully influences racialized experiences. She finds that skin tone meaningfully correlates with political attitudes, particularly on issues where color-based disparities are well-known and most pronounced (e.g. criminal justice, jobs). Moreover, skin tone-related identity is meaningful to a sizable number of African Americans and, in turn, is strongly associated with politi… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. Calculating Compassion in Animal Welfare

University Events Caring about and for animals is a big money industry. Activists and philanthropists spend a lot of energy—and money—trying to figure out the best way to move the public opinion needle, the biggest political bang for the buck, the fastest way to reduce animal suffering. Yet they approach these challenges through different ethical lenses. Effective Altruism relies heavily on utilitarian logic, while activists often invoke virtues as their motivations. In this case study of compassion for animals, questions abound: how should the immeasurable be measured? When does data become detrimental to achieving goals? What’s the logic of giving (money) to reduce (suffering)? Join us for a heartfelt conversation with some of the world's most impactful animal welfare activists. South Asia Seminar

Art History Sonya Rhie Mace, George P. Bickford Curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, will show how artists, patrons, and audiences experienced the ancient epic Ramayana in the royal Pahari courts of northern India during the late seventeenth to early eighteenth century. Colloquium-Physics Department-Jay X Tang (Peking University)

Public Bacterial Swarming-Collective Motion Frequently Altered by Collision and Fluid Flow ,   Swarming is a prevalent form of bacterial collective motility. We study a species of gut bacteria, Enterobacter sp. SM3, which manifests strong swarming behavior. Our ongoing project is probing the SM3 swarm front on agar, a semi-solid substrate that provides nutrients for the bacterial growth. By depositing a fluid droplet at the swarm edge, a monolayer of swarming bacteria is observed. We track the motion of these swarming bacteria, to analyze their trajectories. We measure the velocities, orientations, and mean square displacements of all the bacteria tracked. We further analyze the association of bacteria in close proximity, particularly in connection with dynamic packs they form. We find that the collective motion of swarming is constantly altered by steric collision and the fluid flow caused by individually motile bacteria. Through these experiments, we gain insights on bacterial swarms as a form of active matter of… University Event Topic: Academics. Research. Science. School: Emory College. CMBC LECTURE | David Sloan Wilson "Mind, Brain and Culture from a Generalized Darwinian Perspective"

CMBC Mind, Brain and Culture from a Generalized Darwinian Perspective Generalized Darwinism refers to any process combining the three ingredients of variation, selection, and replication (VSR). It is both old and new: Old, because all the insights associated with Darwinism during its first few decades were in ignorance of the proximate mechanisms of VSR. New, because with the advent of Mendelian genetics, the entire study of evolution became focused on genes, to the exclusion of other VSR processes. A return to generalized Darwinism didn’t commence until the closing decades of the 20th century and is now in full swing, with profound implications for our understanding of mind, brain, and culture. The Emory Cinematheque: Deep Red

Film & Media Film Screening - Deep Red Free event and open to public For Fall of 2025, The Emory Cinematheque presents 1975: A Year in Cinema, a portrait of a remarkable year in film history. Programmed collaboratively by Emory’s Department of Film and Media, 1975: A Year in Cinema reflects the variety, the complexity, and the contradictions of its transitional moment. Each week’s film will be introduced by the member of the faculty or staff who selected it. Please join us for a very special series in which every film is a 50th anniversary screening! Nearly a decade later, Hemmings plays another unwitting witness for another Italian director-- but in an altogether different kind of film. Dario Argento’s absurdist giallo horror film, Deep Red dispenses with psychological realism, indulging in extravagant style. CMBC LECTURE | Deepu Murty "Understanding, Remembering, and Communicating Threatening Events"

CMBC Understanding, Remembering, and Communicating Threatening EventsThreat alters how we represent information. Under threat, individuals tend to prioritize central details at the expense of surrounding contextual information—a shift that reflects and drives changes in medial temporal lobe (MTL) and cortical network dynamics. This talk will explore how threat reshapes the neural architecture supporting event comprehension, which has downstream consequences on how this information is stored in long-term memory. Moreover, we will show how these shifts in brain networks change how threatening experiences are communicated to others. By examining the interplay between emotion, memory, and social dynamics, we highlight mechanisms through which threat can distort shared understanding and social transmission of information. These findings have broad implications for domains ranging from eyewitness testimony to psychotherapy, which both rely on the accurate communication of threatening events. JWJI Colloquium featuring Carolyn Liebler

University Events Talk Title: Mixed Heritage in the Family: Racial Identity, Spousal Choice, and Child-Rearing In this talk, Dr. Carolyn A. Liebler draws from her co-authored book Mixed Heritage in the Family to explore how racially mixed people navigate racial boundaries in choosing spouses and raising children. Using census data and interviews with Asian-White, Black-White, and American Indian/Alaska Native-White individuals, Dr. Liebler examines how identity choices intersect with spousal selection and the ways parents racially identify and raise their children. The research highlights the diversity within mixed-heritage families, showing that having a White spouse does not necessarily mean disconnection from non-White heritage, and that White spouses vary in how they engage with their partner’s minority ancestry. The study also finds that when parents share a minority racial heritage, couples often lean into their shared “family race,” guiding their parenting choices and instilling racial pride in their children. Guest Lecture: Art Music in Ukraine during Wartime as a Tool of Resistance

Music FREE and open to the public, Abstract: Since 2014, when the Russian war against Ukraine began, and especially after the full-scale invasion started, numerous cultural actions have emerged as acts of Ukrainian cultural resistance. At the heart of resistance is a refusal to accept oppression. During the war in Ukraine, composers have been resisting both the wartime circumstances and the political narratives propagated by Russia. Generally, artistic creativity stands against the violence and death inherent in war, generating new meanings that reflect and capture the emotions, desires, and hopes of Ukrainians. This presentation examines theories of resistance to provide a framework for analyzing compositions dedicated to the theme of war and explores the mode of resistance in Ukrainian art music. Specifically, Iryna Tukova focuses on the composition Vox Humana (2023) by Roman Grygoriv, written for an MRLS BM-27 Uragan missile and chamber orchestra. Uniquely, this work uses a missile fragment as a musical… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. Department / Organization: Music Department. Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures.
