Colloquium-Physics Department - Nathalie Vriend (University of Colorado)

Public Title: Flashing Lights in Speeding Grains and "Catch me if you can!" Abstract: Flowing granular materials arise everywhere around us, in industry from pharmaceutical processes to bulk good transport lines, and in nature from snow avalanches to captivating dune fields. In geophysical mass flows encountered in nature, we have an interesting interplay between microscale (grain-grain contacts) and macroscale processes (continuum behavior). In order to understand critical macroscale processes such as slope stability, creep of a hillslope and failure of a dam, we need to be able to visualize and characterize the microscale interactions between individual grains and layers. In this talk, I will introduce some of the research that we have conducted in my research group in the past few years, with a focus on laboratory experiments of avalanches and sand dunes. Bio: Associate Professor Nathalie Vriend joined the University of Colorado Boulder in 2022. Prior to CU Boulder, she spent a 12-year period in the United King… University Event Topic: Academics. The evolution of large brains and long lives: insights from study of wild capuchin monkeys

University Events Large brains and long lives are traits of key relevance to the human condition, and understanding the evolution of these traits has long intrigued anthropologists. Capuchins are an important comparative model system, as they have the largest relative brain size of any monkey and a lifespan that exceeds 55 years, despite their small (3 to 5 kg) body size. I will discuss our genetic, epigenetic, ecological, and behavioural studies of wild Costa Rican capuchin monkeys in Sector Santa Rosa, Costa Rica, with a focus on their relevance to longevity and brain evolution. I will also describe how advances in analysis of noninvasively collected samples provide new opportunities to study evolutionary genomics and socio-ecological modifiers of the pace of aging in non-model organisms. I will end by reflecting on the promise of integrative approaches that directly unite field and captive studies of primates for shedding new light on age-old questions.
