Rothschild Lecture: “Rethinking Jews and Race: A Multiracial Jewish Family in Early America”
University Events
The Tam Institute for Jewish Studies (TIJS) at Emory University will feature Prof. Laura Arnold Leibman of Princeton University as the speaker for this year’s Rabbi Jacob M. Memorial Rothschild Lecture. This free, on-campus event will be held in Emory's Carlos Museum, Ackerman Hall (571 South Kilgo Cir NE, Atlanta, GA 30322).
Sarah Rodrigues Brandon and Isaac Lopez Brandon began their lives poor, Christian, and enslaved in Barbados, yet thirty years later they had become some of the wealthiest Jews in New York. Leibman traces the siblings’ extraordinary journey around the Atlantic world, using artifacts they left behind in Barbados, Suriname, London, Philadelphia, and, finally, New York. While their affluence made them unusual, their story mirrors that of the largely forgotten people of mixed African and Jewish ancestry that constituted as much as ten percent of the Jewish communities in which the siblings lived.

Abstract: In the late 1980s, a Zapotec coffee farmer from the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, which is a region known for its longstanding traditions of semi autonomy and self governance, formed a cooperative and began selling coffee he harvested to German consumers. This farmer’s engagement with the global market through his cooperative is situated within three interlocking historical processes that include Mexican state’s privatization and deregulation of the national economy, liberation theologian activism in Latin America, and Indigenous self determination movements. To better understand the three interlocking processes mentioned above that were so prevalent in Indigenous regions of 1980s…

A Difficult Language: Aymara Media, Linguistic Labor, and Urban Indigeneity in Bolivia
Aymara is a difficult language in more ways than one. The language’s difficulty is sometimes embraced by Aymaras themselves. Its cultivation affords forms of expertise and authority for language professionals and diverse Aymara cultural interventions foreground its difference from Spanish and other European languages. Bolivian Aymaras’ insistence on keeping the language in the public sphere poses difficulties to a colonial status-quo and to those who would rather not accommodate, much less learn, this or any other Indigenous language. Seeing the Stars Up-Close with the CHARA Array, For most telescopes, all but a very small number of stars are just pinpricks of light. We can learn a lot from them when we measure their emission at different wavelengths or measure how their output changes over time, but at the end of the day, they're still just point sources. Using Georgia State University's Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) Array, we are able to zoom in and see the surfaces of nearby stars and their environments. In this talk, I will discuss how we're able to achieve such high resolution and show off some of my favorite CHARA images from the last few years.

Talk Title: The Silver Women: How Black Women’s Labor Made the Panama Canal
The construction of the Panama Canal is typically viewed as a marvel of American ingenuity. What is less understood is the project’s dependence on the labor of Black migrant women. The Silver Women argues that Black Caribbean women made the canal construction possible by providing the indispensable everyday labor of social reproduction. They built a provisioning economy that fed, housed, and cared for the racially segregated workforce, in effect subsidizing the construction effort and its racial calculus. But while also subject to this discrimination, Afro-Caribbean women found ways to subvert the legal, moral, and economic parameters imperial authorities sought to impose on Black migrant laborers. This talk tracks Black women’s important labor of social reproduction, while also excavating their strategies of claims-making, kinship, community building, and market adaptation that helped them navigate the contradictions and violence o…

Darwin's Reasoning About Common Ancestry

Dr. Sober will discuss three of Darwin’s ideas about common ancestry: (1) Similarity is evidence for common ancestry. (2) Adaptive similarities provide meager evidence for common ancestry while nonadaptive similarities provide stronger evidence. (3) Common ancestry allows one to infer characteristics of ancestors and thereby test hypotheses about natural selection. He will use the Law of Likelihood to analyze each of these theses.

There is bad luck in New Felicity. The people of the small coastal village have taken in Milagros, an 11-year-old Venezuelan refugee, just as Trinidad’s government has begun cracking down on undocumented migrants—and now an American journalist has come to town asking questions. New Felicity’s superstitious fishermen fear the worst, certain they’ve brought bad luck on the village by killing a local witch who had herself murdered two villagers the year before. The town has been plagued since her death by alarming visits from her supernatural mother, as well as by a mysterious profusion of scarlet ibis birds.

Carlos Reads Book Club: Spiral to the Stars
Art History
“We constantly urge the nation-state to honor grievance claims. However, if we imagine our relatives not as subjects of the state but as the protagonists of a star story, or of a modern-day migration from the country to the city, to the in-between places, it changes the energy of the experiences that fill the spaces of our lives. They fill with love, energy, power, and self-determination. That is este-cate sovereignty, and it is a form of sovereignty that those who labor for freedom can embrace.” - Laura Harjo
All communities are teeming with energy, spirit, and knowledge. In Spiral to the Stars, geographer Laura Harjo activates this dynamism to discuss Indigenous community planning from a Mvskoke (Muscogee) perspective. Harjo weaves Mvskoke narratives throughout the text, vividly demonstrating that theories come from lived and felt experiences, and that Mvskoke communities have what they need to dream, imagine, speculate, and activate the wishes of ancestors, contemporary kin, and future relatives.…

Twisted topological tangles or: the knot theory of knitting, Imagine a 1D curve, then use it to fill a 2D manifold that covers an arbitrary 3D object – this computationally intensive materials challenge has been realized in the ancient technology known as knitting. This process for making functional materials 2D materials from 1D portable cloth dates back to prehistory, with the oldest known examples dating from the 11th century CE. Knitted textiles are ubiquitous as they are easy and cheap to create, lightweight, portable, flexible and stretchy. As with many functional materials, the key to knitting’s extraordinary properties lies in its microstructure. At the 1D level, knits are composed of an interlocking series of slip knots. At the most basic level there is only one manipulation that creates a knitted stitch – pulling a loop of yarn through another loop. However, there exist hundreds of books with thousands of patterns of stitches with seemingly unbounded complexity. The topology of knitted stitches has…

The Shipwreck at Gnalic-Gagliana Grossa (1569-1583)
University Events
Sailing the route between Venice and Istanbul, the Gagliana Grossa—formerly known as the Lezza, Moceniga e Basadonna—symbolically linked two seemingly opposing, yet deeply interconnected, worlds. The ship sank in mid-autumn of 1583 near the islet of Gnalić close to the Gnal Promontory at the southernmost tip of Paśman Island, Croatia. It was rediscovered in the early 1960s by fishers and divers from the nearby island of Murter.
Decades of systematic research have significantly revised earlier assumptions. Careful examination of archival documents preserved in the State Archives of Venice has led to many surprising and unexpected findings. The story of the shipwreck has grown into a richly detailed narrative, filled with fascinating characters and dramatic events, resembling the plot of a gripping historical drama.
For many years, Croatian scholarly literature described the vessel as a merchant galley that sank in an upright position with its prow facing west. However, current archaeological evidence reve…

Theater Emory: Peerless
Theater Emory
Theater Emory 2025-2026 Season
$20 | Emory Students Free
In this darkly funny satire, twin Asian American sisters, brilliant, ambitious, and inseparable, have dedicated their lives to gaining admission to “The College.” However, when the coveted early decision spot is awarded to someone else, the competition turns deadly. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Peerless offers a razor-sharp exploration of academic pressure, identity, and the lengths we’ll go for success. Wickedly clever and bitingly relevant, this play delves into the heart of ambition with humor, horror, and a candid examination of what it takes to win.

Content Notice: This production contains incidents of racism, ableism, death, simulated physical violence, sexualized content, fire, and body shaming. Recommended parking for Schwartz Center events is the Fishburne Parking Deck (free for events after 6 p.m. and on weekends).

Entangled Histories: Photography and Textile in Africa
Art History
Photography has since its inception been defined in relation to other media. In 1834, five years before the public announcement of the invention of the daguerreotype, Henry Fox Talbot was experimenting with what he called "photogenic drawings," literally sketches produced by light. From the 19th century onward, photography was regularly compared to painting. In 1981, Peter Galassi famously sought to settle the debate with his MoMA exhibition arguing that photography was "the legitimate child of the Western pictorial tradition." Scholars have discussed photography's affinity to sculpture in their shared desire to visualize three-dimensionality, and enable reproducibility. What if photography’s history was entangled with that of textile? Which artists, techniques, and aesthetics would become visible?
Expanding from previous research on portraiture and photography in Senegal, Giulia Paoletti, associate professor in the Department of Art at the University of Virginia and visiting associate professor in the Depar…

Six midwestern men — all survivors of childhood sexual assault at the hands of Catholic priests and clergy — come together to direct a drama therapy-inspired experiment designed to collectively work through their trauma. As part of a radically collaborative filmmaking process, they create fictional scenes based on memories, dreams and experiences, meant to explore the church rituals, culture and hierarchies that enabled silence around their abuse. In the face of a failed legal system, we watch these men reclaim the spaces that allowed their assault, revealing the possibility for catharsis and redemption through a new-found fraternity.

Content Notice: This production contains incidents of racism, ableism, death, simulated physical violence, sexualized content, fire, and body shaming. Recommended parking for Schwartz Center events is the Fishburne Parking Deck (free for events after 6 p.m. and on weekends).

Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd (daily exhibition)
Libraries
“Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd” explores how the typewriter reshaped storytelling, literature, and art over two centuries. The exhibition brings together diverse works – from a draft of “The Wiz” and a first edition of “Dracula” to protest flyers and Tim Youd’s retyped diptychs – showing the typewriter as a force for creativity, cultural change, and political resistance. Drawing on Rose Library archives and Youd’s art, it traces the typewriter’s impact on the 20th century and beyond. Multiple typewriters from different decades will be on display as well. Youd will give live performances at the typewriter from 1–5 p.m. every Sunday-Friday, Sept. 19 – Oct. 17. The exhibition and the performances are free and open to the public. Live musical performances will be added one day a week in the near future as Youd types; calendar entries will be updated when that happens. Exhibitions dates: Daily Aug. 27 – Dec. 20, 2025. Laszlo-Excalibur Lecture: A Conversation with Emily Hauser, author of Penelope's Bones
Art History
Achilles. Agamemnon. Odysseus. Hector. The lives of these and many other men in the greatest epics of ancient Greece have been pored over endlessly in the past three millennia. But these are not just tales about heroic men. There are scores of women as well—complex, fascinating women whose stories have gone unexplored for far too long.
Join the Carlos for a conversation between award-winning classicist and historian Emily Hauser and Curator of Greek and Roman Art Ruth Allen, as they discuss Hauser’s most recent publication Penelope’s Bones: A New History of Homer’s World through the Women Written Out of It, in which Hauser weaves together literary and archaeological evidence, illuminating the rich, intriguing lives of the real women behind Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey.
Unearthing the richly textured lives of women in Bronze Age Greece—the era of Homer’s heroes, we come to understand the everyday lives and experiences of the real women who stand behind the legends of Helen, Briseis, Cassandra, Aphrodite, Circe,…

JWJI Colloquium featuring Hilary Green
University Events
Talk Title: Towards a New Future in Civil War Memory Studies
Since historians David Blight and Barbara Gannon have published their essential works, few Civil War Memory Studies scholars have seriously considered the memory work of ordinary African Americans and how they chose to remember the Civil War in their communities. Since the Black Civil War experience was not monolithic, African Americans collectively built a commemorative culture and traditions recognizing the diverse experience while countering white anti-Black collective Civil War remembrances that reduced them to stereotypes and second-class American citizens. Drawing on research from her recent book, Green proposes a new future in Civil War Memory Studies that embraces new methodologies, sources, and approaches for understanding the scope of African Americans’ Civil War commemorative culture.
