Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd (daily exhibition)
Libraries
“Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd” explores how the typewriter reshaped storytelling, literature, and art over two centuries. The exhibition brings together diverse works – from a draft of “The Wiz” and a first edition of “Dracula” to protest flyers and Tim Youd’s retyped diptychs – showing the typewriter as a force for creativity, cultural change, and political resistance. Drawing on Rose Library archives and Youd’s art, it traces the typewriter’s impact on the 20th century and beyond. Multiple typewriters from different decades will be on display as well. Youd will give live performances at the typewriter from 1–5 p.m. every Sunday-Friday, Sept. 19 – Oct. 17. The exhibition and the performances are free and open to the public. Live musical performances will be added one day a week in the near future as Youd types; calendar entries will be updated when that happens. Exhibitions dates: Daily Aug. 27 – Dec. 20, 2025. JWJI Colloquium featuring Tracey Weldon
University Events
Now That’s a Word! Middle Class African American English and the Strategic Construction of Identity
Despite decades of sociolinguistic research, most studies of African American English (AAE) have focused on working-class speech communities, largely at the exclusion of middle-class speakers. As a result, little consideration has been given to the linguistic dexterity of middle-class speakers and the extent to which they draw on the full range of the AAE continuum in the construction of their identities. In this talk, Tracey Weldon explores some of the ways in which middle-class speakers make use of vernacular structural features, camouflaged features, and lexical and rhetorical expression, to strategically construct both race-based and class-based identities.

Quantum Sensing of Moiré Magnetism
Moiré magnetism featured by stacking engineered atomic registry and lattice interactions has recently emerged as an appealing quantum state of matter at the forefront of condensed matter physics research. Nanoscale imaging of moiré magnets is highly desirable and serves as a prerequisite to investigate a broad range of intriguing physics underlying the interplay between topology, electronic correlations, and unconventional magnetism. In this talk, I will present our recent work on using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers to perform nanoscale quantum sensing and imaging of magnetic domains and spin fluctuations in twisted double trilayer (tDT) chromium triiodide CrI3. We show that intrinsic moiré domains of opposite magnetizations appear over arrays of moiré supercells in low-twist-angle tDT CrI3 [1]. In addition, spin fluctuations measured in tDT CrI3 reveal two distinct magnetic phase transitions with separate critical temperatures within a moiré supercell [2]. Our results…

Emory Big Band and Jazz Combos
Music
2025–2026 Emory Department of Music, Free Event/No Tickets Required, View or Print Program
Emory Jazz Combos and Big Band features Emory University Jazz students under the direction of Gary Motley, Randy Hunter, Chris Riggenbach, and Penelope Williams.
The Emory Jazz Combos give students an opportunity to explore many facets of improvisation in a small group setting. Usually consisting of five to eight members, the primary focus of these groups is on gaining experience in improvising and soloing for each participant. Our groups promote individual expression as well as group interaction and cohesiveness. These ensembles regularly perform for many events both on and off campus.
The Emory Big Band gives students an opportunity to develop their performance skills in a large ensemble setting. Performance literature ranges from traditional big band music to works by many of today's composers and arrangers. In addition to annual performances, the big band is regularly showcased during the Emory Jazz Fest.

Each week’s film will be introduced by the member of the faculty or staff who selected it.
Please join us for a very special series in which every film is a 50th anniversary screening!
Medieval myth and history provide comic fodder for Britain’s favorite surrealist comedy troupe in their rendition of the Grail Quest. In search of the divine chalice, King Arthur (Graham Chapman) assembles a team of knights, Lancelot (John Cleese), Galahad (Michael Palin), Bedivere (Terry Jones), and cowardly Sir Robin (Eric Idle). Together, they embark on a rambling adventure guided by the light of effervescent silliness. As the questers trav…

27 – Dec. 20, 2025. 2025–2026 Emory Dance, Free Event / No Tickets Required, Friends of Dance Lecture: Midtown Dance: Black Concert Dance Histories and New York City's Clark Center, 1959-1989
Kristopher Pourzal, PhD, Assistant Professor, Kennesaw State University
