Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd (exhibition)

Libraries “Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd” explores how the typewriter reshaped storytelling, literature, and art over two centuries. JWJI Colloquium featuring Patricia Akhimie

University Events Talk Title: Extra-Illustrating Othello In this talk, Dr. Patricia Akhimie examines the politics and impact of illustration in editions of Shakespeare’s Othello. While Shakespeare’s works are often accompanied by illustrations, many editions of Othello have been “extra-illustrated” with images added after publication. Dr. Akhimie explores how these visual choices—through cropping, captioning, and positioning—shape readers’ interpretations and reveal assumptions about race, gender, and audience. Focusing on images that perpetuate or resist harmful stereotypes, she considers how fantastical and othered depictions of Blackness and women rehearse some of the play’s most damaging messages, including racist caricature, Black pain, and violence against women. Ultimately, the talk asks: how might illustration not only reinforce but also challenge the play’s highly visual and troubling language around race? University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. Department / Organization: James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference. Meeting Organizer/Sponsor: James Weldon Johnson Institute. Film Screening of Landfall directed by Cecilia Aldarondo

University Events Film Screening of Landfall directed by Cecilia Aldarondo Hosted by Professor Mariya Vlasova 6:30 PM Humanities 202 Through shard-like glimpses of everyday life in post-Hurricane María Puerto Rico, LANDFALL is a cautionary tale for our times. Set against the backdrop of protests that toppled the US colony's governor in 2019, the film offers a prismatic portrait of collective trauma and resistance. While the devastation of María attracted a great deal of media coverage, the world has paid far less attention to the storm that preceded it: a 72-billion-dollar debt crisis crippling Puerto Rico well before the winds and waters hit. LANDFALL examines the kinship of these two storms-one environmental, the other economic-juxtaposing competing utopian visions of recovery. Featuring intimate encounters with Puerto Ricans as well as the newcomers flooding the island, LANDFALL reflects on a question of contemporary global relevance: when the world falls apart, who do we become? Runtime: 1 hour 31 minutes. University Event Topic: Community. Special Event. School: Oxford College. Department / Organization: Oxford College. Building/Room: Humanities Hall - Oxford. Cost: Free. Carlos Reads: I Am Still With You

Michael C. Carlos Museum After years of living in New York, author Emmanuel Iduma tells the story of his return to Nigeria. He traveled home with an elusive mission: to learn the fate of his uncle Emmanuel, his namesake, who disappeared in the Nigerian Civil War in the late 1960s. A conflict that left so many families broken, the war remains at the margins of the history books, almost taboo to discuss. To find answers, Iduma stopped in city after city reconnecting with relatives dear and distant, to probe their memories, prowling university libraries to furtively photocopy illicit books, and visiting half-abandoned monuments along the highway. Perhaps, he realized, if he could understand how his father grieved the loss of a brother in the war, he might learn how to grieve his late father in turn.     Led by TK Smith, curator of the Arts of Africa and the Africa Diaspora, participants will discuss Iduma’s story of family history and legacy, and all the questions the dead leave unanswered. How much of his identity is wrapped up in this… Event Location: Board Room. Department / Organization: Carlos Museum. Membership Link: https://carlos.emory.edu/join. Public Fragility of Soft Earth Materials It is all too clear that Earth is fragile, as human disturbances disrupt the natural cycles that sustain a habitable planet. Earth is also fragile matter: apparently solid soil can suddenly lose rigidity when stressed by rainfall or earthquake shaking; and earth materials exhibit creep, aging and hysteresis. In this talk I consider some existential challenges of living sustainably on a fragile (matter) planet, and advocate for the need of Soft Matter Physics to address these challenges. To first order, we may consider Soft Earth materials -- and their associated geophysical flows -- to be composed of three ingredients: frictional particles (sand/silt), cohesive particles (clay, fine silt, organic material), and water. In this talk I demonstrate how the origins of complex behaviors of Earth materials arise from these ingredients, with surprises for both geologists and physicists. Experiments show that creep hardens hillslope soils and river beds, that landscapes `breathe' in… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. Science. School: Emory College. Film Screening of Memories of a Penitent Heart directed by Cecilia Aldarondo

University Events Film Screening of Memories of a Penitent Heart directed by Cecilia Aldarondo Hosted by Professor Mariya Vlasova 6:30 PM Humanities 201 Memories of a Penitent Heart is an American documentary film that premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. Written and directed by Cecilia Aldarondo, the film follows her personal journey to learn more about her late uncle, Miguel Dieppa, an aspiring actor and playwright who died of an AIDS-related illness when she was just six years old, having met him only once. The project began when Aldarondo received a box of old family home videos from her mother, which included rare footage of Miguel. Curious about his life and the circumstances surrounding his death, she began a search for his former partner, known only to her as Robert. She ultimately locates him, now a Roman Catholic priest under the name Father Aquin. Trust on Trial: Clinical Ethics in the Misinformation Era

University Events We will explore how the shifting information ecosystem (social media, AI, intentional misinformation and fragmented expertise) reshapes patient and family willingness to trust clinical recommendations. You Were My First Boyfriend directed by Cecilia Aldarondo

University Events You Were My First Boyfriend directed by Cecilia Aldarondo Hosted by Professor Vlasova 1:00 PM - Humanities 202 What if you could rewrite your adolescence? In this high school reunion movie turned inside out, filmmaker Aldarondo embarks on a fantastical quest to reconcile her tortured teen years. She revisits some of her most formative -- and at times cringeworthy -- childhood experiences, tracking down old crushes and reenacting visceral memories of youthful humiliation and desire, at times playing the role of her younger self and casting teenagers to play the kids in her life who still haunt her. Oscillating between present and past, humor and heartbreak, YOU WERE MY FIRST BOYFRIEND is a hybrid documentary that takes seriously the power of adolescence and the way time impacts memories, exploring what it means to grow up and make peace with the drama of our teenage trauma. From the 18th-century founding of Yale College to the Indian Reorganization Act and Brown v. Board of Education, this work examines how schooling institutionalized ruling ideologies while also providing space for contestation and resistance. By centering the experiences of Black and Indigenous people—and highlighting figures such as W.E.B. CGSW Seminar Series:Seasonal Variation in Exposure to V. cholerae i..

University Events Cholera is a severe diarrheal disease caused by V. cholerae, estimated to cause up to 143,000 deaths each year. The transmission of Cholera is known to be impacted by seasonal dynamics and has been highlighted as a climate-sensitive disease by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Populations in informal settlements are experiencing high growth rates and are highly vulnerable to Cholera. We examined the variation in Cholera exposure to two populations in informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya, using a combination of environmental microbiology to quantify V. cholerae presence across environmental pathways, and surveys to quantify human-environment contact rates. We quantify the change in pathogen exposure and the change in dominant pathways as the season changes. In doing so, we provide a holistic assessment of seasonal change in the environmental exposure to V. cholerae in these vulnerable populations. Online Location: https://zoom.us/j/94037069081. JWJI Colloquium featuring Mayukh Sen

University Events Talk Title: Becoming Hollywood’s First South Asian Star: Merle Oberon and the Legal Fiction of Race in 20th Century America In this talk, Mayukh Sen examines the life and career of Merle Oberon (1911–1979), the first South Asian performer to receive an Academy Award nomination. Oberon, born to a Sri Lankan mother and white father in India, navigated Hollywood by “passing” as white at the urging of her publicists and under the constraints of Hollywood’s racial prescriptions. This performance of identity enabled her iconic role in Wuthering Heights (1939) but also revealed the structural barriers that South Asian immigrants faced in the United States, including immigration laws and citizenship restrictions based on race. Drawing from his forthcoming biography Love, Queenie (W.W. Norton & Company, 2025), Sen situates Oberon’s story within the broader context of immigration, race, gender, and power in 20th-century America. Through archival research and interviews with Oberon’s family, he uncovers a counter-na… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. Lecture by Dr. Madhavi Menon- Love in the Moonlight: Sufism, Sexuality, Shakespeare

University Events October 8, 4:30-6 pm, White Hall 102 | Lecture by Dr. Madhavi Menon "Love in the Moonlight: Sufism, Sexuality, Shakespeare" There would be no Shakespeare without Sufism. The radical ideas about desire and sexuality that we encounter in his work emerge out of a conversation, not with Renaissance humanism, but with Sufism. Indeed, many of these ideas are not to be found anywhere other than in Sufi poetry. Both sets of texts operate under the sign of the moon – aroused in the dark, changing shape. And while a “Sufi Shakespeare” is not a historically verifiable fact – Shakespeare probably did not read Sufi texts before writing about the enmity of two clans in Romeo and Juliet – both Sufi and Shakespearean texts explore strikingly similar questions about poetry and desire. These ideas – from friendship to cross-dressing, and from desire to the death drive – come from realms other than Renaissance England and anticipate much of what passes now as queer theory. Ranging across questions of sexual orientation and gend… University Event Topic: Humanities. Arts. College. Graduate. Faculty. International. Lectures & Meetings. Religion & Ethics. Research. Later in life, she would twice buy carpets that emulated their shades. But she never realized that the Turkic and Persian names of their distinctive patterns pointed to a cultural confluence that was typical of the region– or that Jews were part of that confluence. Emory Visual Arts Gallery presents: Lindsay Burke - Quick Split

Visual Arts The Emory Visual Arts Gallery is pleased to present Quick Split, an exhibition of paintings by Brooklyn-based artist Lindsay Burke. Free exhibit, open to public  Burke’s paintings approach the human body as both image and structure, a ground where personal, cultural, and formal questions converge. Her work moves between the poetic and the schematic, presenting the figure as something at once familiar and estranged. Referencing art history, industrial design, and architectural drawing, Burke places the body in a constant state of negotiation. Forms slip between abstraction and representation, echoing the ways identity is assembled, performed, and dissolved. Figures often appear on the edge of transformation—mechanical and organic, vulnerable and resilient—framing the body as a site of emotional intensity, political tension, and imaginative possibility. Surface and structure hold equal weight in her practice. Expansive painterly passages give way to exacting line, underscoring the instability of perception. Fe… University Event Topic: Arts. Emory Visual Arts Gallery presents: Lindsay Burke - Quick Split Gallery Talk

Arts at Emory The Emory Visual Arts Gallery is pleased to present Quick Split, an exhibition of paintings by Brooklyn-based artist Lindsay Burke. Free event, open to public  Burke’s paintings approach the human body as both image and structure, a ground where personal, cultural, and formal questions converge. Femi… University Event Topic: Arts.
