Quantum seminar

Colloquia The Character of PRX: Editorial Insights from the First 15 Years and Beyond, PRX is published by the American Physical Society, a nonprofit membership society of scientists. Its mission goal is to select around 250 *landmark* papers a year from all fields of physics and showcase them to a broad and multidisciplinary readership. After 15 years, one might still wonder exactly what PRX is—or, asked differently, how PRX defines a "landmark" through the peer-review process. As a "physics" journal, does PRX welcome the submissions from other core areas, eg. chemistry, materials science, engineering, or even computer science? As an author or referee, you may be curious about how PRX editors actually select these papers. Furthermore, there is always the fair question: are these selections always accurate? In this talk, I will discuss how we approach these questions. Many of these questions do not have a black-and-white answer in the case of a single paper. Instead, open-minded, reasoned, and constructive dialogue… University Event Topic: Seminars & Workshops. Science. Research. School: Emory College. Department / Organization: Physics Department. Building/Room: Atwood Chemistry Center. Meeting Organizer/Sponsor: Physics/Chemistry Department. Speaker/Presenter: Dr. Yiming Xu, Senior Associate Editor of Physical Review X. Cleaner Data from Joseph Banks' Archives: Benchmarking a Decade of Text Mining Historical Documents

University Events Work on a 2012 Digging into Data grant demonstrated that existing tools could not overcome the high signal-to-noise ratio of digital archives. We could statistically confirm expected patterns, but struggled to distinguish genuine anomalies from transcription noise. Returning to this work in 2025 with multimodal models, knowledge graphs, and vector databases, the technical noise is more effectively controlled. Using the Joseph Banks corpus as a case study, this talk demonstrates how these new architectures allow us to move beyond simple retrieval to follow ideas across his network. It will conclude by reinforcing the limits of these new methods, as they do not overcome the silences in the archives. University Event Topic: Data Science. Humanities. Seminars & Workshops. School: Emory College. Department / Organization: Department of Data and Decision Sciences. Building/Room: Psychology Building. Meeting Organizer/Sponsor: Dept of Data & Decision Sciences. Speaker/Presenter: Jim Clifford (U of Saskatchewan). Event Open To: All (Public). Emory Community. Cost: Free. Contact Name: Lora McDonald. Contact Phone: 404-727-0538. Colloquium-Physics Department - Sidhartha Goyal, Associate Professor (University of Toronto)

Public Dimensionality in Living Systems, Modern biological experiments measure thousands of variables at once, making living systems appear overwhelmingly complex. Surprisingly, recent work shows that many biological processes can be described using only a few effective degrees of freedom. In this talk, I will use gene expression data from cell fate transitions in developing and regenerating tissues to explain what we mean by the effective dimensionality of a biological process and how it can be identified from data. I will then argue that this dimensionality depends on the biological context and the question of interest. Finally, I will describe an in vitro cellular reprogramming system that suggests cell fate transitions may unfold along multiple low-dimensional trajectories. University Event Topic: Academics. Research. Science. College. School: Emory College. Department / Organization: Physics Department. Meeting Organizer/Sponsor: Physics Department. Series: Colloquium. Sir Alan Gardiner famously complained that the ancient Egyptian scribe “could not give written expression even to his aesthetic emotions without a complete surrender to the conventional phraseology.” Setting aside questions of capability, Gardiner’s remark raises deeper issues about the flexibility of the writing system and our ability to detect variation as evidence of intent. In this lecture, Niv Allon, curator of Egyptian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, explores these questions through three case studies that move from individual signs, to writing practices, and finally to choices of script. Together, these examples suggest a greater degree of agency in scribal decision‑making than is often acknowledged.    This program is free and open to the public, and registration is required.     "Scribal Intent: Scribes and Agency in Ancient Egypt" at the Carlos Museum is supported in part by the Peter Lacovara Lecture Fund. Emory Cinematheque: Nothing but a Man

Film & Media Emory Cinematheque: Nothing but a Man Directed by Michael Roemer, 1964 | 95 min. This underseen masterpiece of American independent cinema depicts working class Black experience in the South of the early 1960s with enormous sensitivity and intimacy, a far cry from the slicker Hollywood versions produced in the decade. When self-contained, confident railroad worker Duff Anderson (Ivan Dixon, The Spook Who Sat By the Door, Hogan’s Heroes) comes to a southern town and falls in love with the preacher’s daughter Josie (jazz legend Abbey Lincoln), they struggle to fight all kinds of pressures from the Black and white communities which insist they accept the indignities of segregation and white supremacy. Recently restored, the film looks better than ever, with superb performances from the entire cast. Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. DSci Happy Hour with Lauren Klein

University Events When Theory Leads: Towards a Humanities-Forward Model of Computational Research -- The advent of Large Language Models and the cultural data they rely upon has renewed a longstanding conversation about the role of the humanities, and humanities scholars, in computational research. This role has to do not only with the application of LLMs (and related computational methods) to humanities research questions, but also with the application of humanistic methods to computational research. Using a series of projects about social movements from the Emory Digital Humanities Lab as case studies, this talk will show how humanistic methods—and theory in particular—can not only inform the overall design of computational research projects but can also shape the development of computational models themselves. Connecting the contributions of these projects back to the broader landscape of AI/ML, I will argue that humanities theory, and the scholars who produce and engage with it, have very clear roles to play if we are to e… University Event Topic: Data Science. Sunday FUNday: Mola Magic

University Events Before Spanish colonists introduced scissors to Central and South America, people wove fabric in one large piece rather than cutting and stitching it. But in the 20th century, the Guna people of Panamá began embracing cloth-cutting as a powerful new art form. Using layered fabrics, reverse applique, and intricate geometric designs, Guna women created dulemolas—vibrant rectangular panels that form the front and back of traditional blouses. These panels often feature stylized animals or symbolic patterns that reflect their cultural resilience.  Come learn about this unique textile tradition and create your own one-of-a-kind dulemola or “mola” using different fabrics!    Sunday FUNday is a free drop-in program for all families and includes admission to the museum. JWJI Colloquium featuring Sarah RudeWalker

University Events Talk Title: Revolutionary Poetics: The Rhetoric of the Black Arts Movement This talk will introduce audience members to the aesthetic and political mission of the Black Arts Movement (BAM), the aesthetic arm of Black Power in the 1960s and 1970s, by assessing its legacy as a movement that aimed fundamentally to change people’s minds through art. Dr. RudeWalker argues that BAM has had far-reaching influence, particularly in encouraging positive conceptions of Blackness, in the valorization of Black language practices in art and in education, in modeling the populist dissemination of Black vernacular culture through writing and popular music, and in setting the groundwork for considerations of the aesthetic intersections of race with gender and sexuality. These legacies stand as the movement’s primary—and largely unacknowledged—successes, and they provide significant lessons for navigating our current political moment. Blunt Instrument: Why Economic Theory Can’t Get Any Better, Why We Need It Anyway

University Events Based on his book of the same name, Dr. Rosenberg will discuss why economic theory—with no track-record of predictive success—is still an indispensable tool for protecting civilized life. Economic theory has never gotten any better at prediction. Its explanations are always after the fact. The mathematical models economists have devoted themselves to for more than a century can’t be improved to enhance their empirical relevance. But from this research program that never paid off, a very useful tool has emerged—game theory. It’s just what civilized society needs to protect itself from the rapaciousness that condemns all markets to fail. In his talk, Dr. Rosenberg will help explain exactly what is needed to make sense of economic theory, and why despite its failures, it’s still indispensable. Economic theory is something we all should understand because the economy affects us all, and it is economic theorists who shape that economy for good or ill. University Event Topic: Data Science. Arts at Emory Ethics on the Stage: Fires, Ohio, Monday, Feb 9 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm EST Emory University Center for Ethics, Room 102 ------- On Monday, February 9 from 6:30-8:00pm, former Center for Ethics Director, Paul Roote Wolpe, will return for an Ethics on the Stage staged readings and discussions from the Alliance Theater’s upcoming production of Fires, Ohio. As wildfires rage closer and closer to a small Ohio college town, the mopey grown children and second wife of a sort-of-mediocre professor are threatened by another kind of crisis: a visit from a family friend that threatens to bring all of their tensions to a towering inferno. Now, each of them will be forced to choose: stay and smolder, or leave and burn? Inspired by the classic family drama Uncle Vanya, FIRES, OHIO updates a beloved story for our painfully absurd present, taking a hilarious and heartfelt look at the natural (and personal) disasters that transform our everyday lives. . Making Maps for Publication

University Events This workshop will guide researchers in producing maps for publication, with a particular focus on books and academic journals. We will spend the first part of the workshop covering best practices for effective visual communication, including design, dealing with common academic publication limitations (small map size, limited number of figures, restriction to greyscale), and working with art guidelines from the publisher. We will then complete a hands-on exercise in ArcGIS Pro applying many of these lessons to create a final map layout that is publication ready. This workshop is intended for those with some ArcGIS Pro experience and will not cover introductory concepts. However, all experience levels are welcome. We will work through the hands-on portion step-by-step using provided data. For those interested in learning more about GIS software, resources will be provided at the end of the workshop. Colloquium-Physics Department - David Vanderbilt, Professor of Physics and Astronomy (Rutgers University)

Public Theory of adiabatic phonon-magnon coupling in magnetic materials, Conventional approaches for computing lattice dynamics do not fully account for the effects of time-reversal symmetry breaking in magnetic systems.  Recent approaches to rectify this involve incorporating the first-order force on each atom induced not only by the displacements, but also by the velocities, of other nearby atoms.  The latter "emergent Lorentz forces" arise as the leading-order terms in adiabatic perturbation theory, and turn out to be governed by nothing other than the Berry curvature of the electronic ground state with respect to atomic displacements. Because the spin degrees of freedom ("magnons") evolve on a time scale that is similar to that of the lattice vibrations ("phonons"), a valid theory has to treat both on an equal footing. I will describe the theory of these effects, and present some representative results on CrI3 and Cr2O3 as paradigmatic systems. University Event Topic: Academics. Research. Science. College. Dance 2025–2026 Emory Dance, Free Event / No Tickets Required, Friends of Dance Lecture: Midtown Dance: Black Concert Dance Histories and New York City's Clark Center, 1959-1989 Kristopher Pourzal, PhD, Assistant Professor, Kennesaw State University You probably know something about Alvin Ailey, but have you heard of Thelma Hill, Charles Moore, and Pepsi Bethel? Like Ailey, all of these choreographers were beloved fixtures in the New York City dance scene of the 1960s-80s. All of them helped to shape multiple generations of dance artists. And all taught at Clark Center. Originally founded as a home for Ailey's company in 1959, Clark Center was a vibrant hub of dance teaching and training, especially for African Americans. In this lecture, I share this under-told history of Black concert dance, drawing on archival research and oral history interviews with over twenty Clark Center alumni. Also key to understanding Clark Center’s significance was its location: midtown Manhattan, near Times Square and Broadway.… University Event Topic: Arts. School: All Emory University. CMBC LECTURE | Shaun Gallagher "Compassion: Real and Artificial"

CMBC "Compassion: Real and Artificial" I’ve proposed a pattern theory of compassion. On this view, compassion is a specific pattern of dynamically related factors that include physiological, cognitive, and affective processes, relational/intersubjective processes, and motivational/action tendencies (Gallagher, Raffone, Aglioti 2024). The idea of compassion as a dynamical pattern is reflected in neuroscientific findings, as well as in compassion practice. This view also allows for a clear distinction between compassion, empathy, and sympathy. Following Dennett’s conception of “real pattern,” compassion can be said to have a pragmatic reality. After summarizing this view I’ll address a question (raised by both computer scientists and Buddhist scholars) about the possibility of creating a compassionate AI system. Can there be such a thing as artificial compassion? University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. Department / Organization: Center for Mind Brain and Culture. Emory Cinematheque: Ashes and Diamonds

Film & Media Emory Cinematheque: Ashes and Diamonds Directed by Andzrej Wajda, 1958 | 103 min. Andzrej Wajda’s third film on World War II Polish experience is still arguably his greatest. Its tight 24 hour time frame takes place in a small town on the pivotal day when the Nazis have retreated but the Soviet military are rolling in to assume authority--The long-time underground resistance fighter Maciek Chelmicki (the charismatic, dynamic Zbigniew Cybulski, called “the Polish James Dean”) has fought both enemies---and he weighs the moral and emotional dimensions of his latest assignment--to assassinate the new local Communist leader. PSP Lunch & Learn: Wolf Man's Unborn Sibling

University Events Wolf Man’s Unborn Sibling Patrilineal, familial kinship is integral to traditional psychoanalytic conceptions of subjectivity and relationality, yet the lateral import of sibling relationships —especially sister relationships—is curiously underwritten in Freudian metapsychology. This paper explores the limits of lateral kinship through a close reading of the psychically constitutive force of dead, alive, and unborn siblings in Freud’s infamous Wolf Man case study. Following Nicholas Abraham and Maria Torok’s theory of the encrypted other primal scene of the father-sister pair in Wolf Man’s psyche, Elissa Marder’s emphasis on the womblike character of this crypt structure, and Freud’s discussion of Wolf Man’s dread of a younger sibling, this paper proposes that another presence in Wolf Man’s crypt is that of a phantasmatic, unborn, younger sibling borne of and as the secret of sexual relations between his father and sister. The crypt-baby that Wolf Man carries in his psyche-belly is rife with contradictory o… University Event Topic: Academics. Humanities. Seminars & Workshops. School: Graduate School. Ethics Across Traditions: Thou Shall Not See - Ethics and Prohibiting Images

University Events Join us for a heartfelt conversation about controlling—even banning—what we might see. Much as certain words are prohibited because they are deemed dangerous or degrading, some images are also considered too threatening to produce, distribute, or view. For instance: Some think the Pernkopf Atlas, a book of anatomy drawn from Nazi victims, should continue to be used it Schools of Medicine, while others consider it verboten. Religions like Islam and Jainism, and indigenous communities like those at Etowah, consider images powerful, yet some images are deemed forbidden. Why? What is a museum’s responsibility to the truth? Should museums refrain from putting out objects that may be objectionable or sensitive, or should they in the interest of the truth be more inclined to do so? Cartographers often deliberately hide what’s in plain sight. Who decides what to obscure? What is the nature of such illicit images? What fears or concerns justify forbidding them? Though beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, some ima… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. Religion & Ethics. Theology. Humanities. Arts. Department / Organization: Center for Ethics. CMBC LECTURE | Sashank Varma "The Travelling Salesperson Problem: How Humans 'Efficiently' Solve a Problem which is 'Hard' for Computers."

CMBC "The Travelling Salesperson Problem: How Humans 'Efficiently' Solve a Problem which is 'Hard' for Computers." The Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) is an important problem in mathematics and computer science. A TSP instance is a set of points. To solve it is to produce a ‘tour’ that starts at one point and returns to it after visiting all other points exactly once, and to solve it optimally is to produce a tour of minimum length. As far as we know, computers cannot solve this problem optimally. It is therefore surprising that, for small instances, people produce tours that are near-optimal (i.e. within 10% of the minimal length), and they do so in time linear in the number of points. To accomplish this remarkable feat, we propose that they adopt a divide-and-conquer strategy: first visually clustering the points, then solving each cluster as a smaller TSP instance, and finally joining together these solutions to solve the overall problem. We provide evidence for this proposal in three behavioral… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. Department / Organization: Center for Mind Brain and Culture. Dr. Núria Silleras-Fernández: "Well-behaved Women Made it into Historiography: Discourse, Emotions, and the Domestication of Isabel I of Castile, 1474–1504"

History Please join the Medieval Studies Roundtable and Department of History for: Dr. Núria Silleras-Fernández, Professor of Spanish & Portuguese, University of Colorado Boulder, “Well-behaved Women Made it into Historiography: Discourse, Emotions, and the Domestication of Isabel I of Castile, 1474–1504” Wednesday, February 18 | 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM | Anthropology Building, Room 303, Taking as a point of departure the second-wave feminist axiom “Well-behaved women seldom make history,” this paper argues that even when women did make history, they did not necessarily make historiography. Rather, their political authority and achievements were frequently reframed, diminished, or domesticated through discourse. Focusing on Queen Isabel I of Castile, this study examines the tension between her exercise of sovereign power and its subsequent historiographical representation. Emory Cinematheque: The Lives of Others

Film & Media Emory Cinematheque: The Lives of Others Directed by Florian Hencken von Donnersmarck, 2006 | 137 min. Screening introduced by Dr. Caroline Schaumann, Professor of German Studies. Florian Hencken von Donnersmarck burst onto the international scene with this Oscar-winning exploration of oppressed life and artistic censorship during the 1980s in repressive, authoritarian East Germany. When a die-hard STASI (secret police) agent begins surveilling a successful, government-approved playwright and his partner, a leading actress, he begins to question his work and his own beliefs. With an exquisitely complex script and superb performances from his cast, von Donnersmarck crafted one of the greatest films of the 21st century, a truly moving example of coming to terms with the past and the unquenchable desire for freedom. Emory Cinematheque: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Film & Media Emory Cinematheque: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Directed by John Ford, 1962 | 123 min. The western genre mythologized America’s frontier expansion, and John Ford’s last great film in this genre manages to sum up both his own work and the genre itself. Through the multiple confrontations among the murderous outlaw Liberty Valence (Lee Marvin), the quintessential western loner hero Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) and naïve eastern lawyer Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart), this ultimately elegiac film explores and dismantles the mythology of the settling of the west while dramatizing the process of establishing a western state—and at what cost. Suspenseful, funny and ultimately melancholy, Liberty Valence‘s dramatization of competing values of individualism and community and the place of gun violence in American history remain strikingly relevant today. The three leads give iconic performances. Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Arts at Emory. Film & Media. Event Open To: All (Public). Student Studio: Scented History

Michael C. Carlos Museum Across ancient cultures, scents were closely connected to daily life, ritual, and well-being. The ancient Greeks ground aromatic plants and resins and suspended them in olive oil, while ancient Egyptians combined materials such as lily, frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon bark, and thyme with animal fats to create perfumes believed to soothe the body, focus the mind, and restore balance. In this Student Studio, take a pause from your day as you explore the history of scent and create your own signature fragrance using a variety of scented oils—an opportunity to slow down, engage your senses, and support personal well-being through creative practice.    Student Studio is a drop-in program and like admission to the Carlos Museum, is always free for Emory students. Emory Cinematheque: The Third Man

Film & Media Emory Cinematheque: The Third Man Directed by Carol Reed , 1949 | 104 min. Arguably no film better captured the sense of post-World War II disillusionment than Carol Reed’s realization of an original Graham Greene script about despicable crime and corruption in Vienna. Declared by at least one critic as “probably the greatest British thriller of the postwar era,” the film, featuring exteriors shot on location in Vienna, is largely a detective noir featuring an out of his depth American pulp fiction writer Holly Martens (Joseph Cotton), his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles) and the woman they both love (Alida Valli). Reed elicited memorable performances from his cast (also including Trevor Howard). Cinematographer Robert Krasker furthered the film's unsettling atmosphere with his extensive use of canted angles. And Anton Karas’s zither “Third Man Theme” achieved top-charting status for nearly three months. You will have a hard time forgetting it or more to the point, the film.
