At Civility's Edge: Ethics and Intolerance

University Events Tolerance stretches only so far. In which ways are the limits of tolerance fixed and unchangeable? Or do we manufacture those edges when we refuse to accept certain differences—of belief, opinion, practices, peoples? If intolerance is willfully made, which values justify its shape? If intolerance is more fixed and objective, what can/should we do about it? When our professions/guilds/traditions think about intolerance, what—and who—do we think about? In an age of profound compassion and baseless degradation, we must seriously consider our role in fostering—and controlling—intolerance. Join us for a heartfelt conversation about civility’s edge. University Event Topic: A Year of Compassion. Community. Politics. Religion & Ethics. Department / Organization: Center for Ethics. Emory Cinematheque: The Gold Rush

Film & Media Emory Cinematheque: The Gold Rush Directed by Charles Chaplin, 1925 | 96 min. 1920s silent comedy was America’s gift to the world, and Charlie Chaplin’s film about the Tramp’s adventures in the frozen north remains the peak of his considerable 1920s achievements. He had solved the challenge of combining stand-alone comic episodes into a fully realized narrative and created a fully realized fictional world. Chaplin remains the greatest screen performer in cinema history, and this film—for which he wrote the script, the music and which he directed--showcases his trademark inventiveness via the imaginative transformation of objects, hilarious slapstick, as well as The Tramp’s enduring, endearing yearning for love and acceptance. We are screening the brand new restoration print celebrating the film’s 100th anniversary. Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Arts at Emory. Film Screening: La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty)

Art History For decades, journalist Jep Gambardella has charmed and seduced his way through the glittering nightlife of Rome. Since the legendary success of his only novel, he has been a permanent fixture in the city’s literary and elite social circles. But on his sixty-fifth birthday, Jep unexpectedly finds himself taking stock of his life, turning his cutting wit on himself and his contemporaries, and looking past the lavish nightclubs, parties, and cafés to find Rome itself, in all its monumental glory: a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty. Featuring sensuous cinematography, a lush score, and an award-winning central performance by the great Toni Servillo, this transporting experience by the brilliant Italian director Paolo Sorrentino is a breathtaking Felliniesque tale of decadence and lost love. 2013. 142 minutes. CMBC LECTURE | Raphaël Julliard "The Creative Engine and the Sense of Rightness"

CMBC “The Creative Engine and the Sense of Rightness”My research operates at the intersection of anthropology, the psychology of creativity, and micro-phenomenology. It is driven by a central question: in the uncertainty of the creative act, how do creators know when it works? While traditional approaches often rely on retrospective reconstruction, my work focuses on the "creative engine": the real-time feedback loop between Action (what the maker does) and Affect (how the emerging form acts back upon the maker). I posit that creativity is not a cognitive planning process, but a navigational skill steered by a pre-reflective affective criterion—a felt sense of fitness we conceptualize as "Rightness"—guiding the artist between the risks. To study this, I have moved from historical analysis to experimental ethnography, developing a novel methodology—The Researcher-As-Obstacle (RAO)—designed to investigate the creative mind in action. My goal is to establish a rigorous anthropology of this navigational competence,… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. All About Physical Therapy: What is It, and Should You Try It?

University Events When you’re dealing with muscle or joint pain, how do you usually handle it? Do you rest and take a break from your usual exercise? Take over-the-counter or prescription pain medication? Turn to a heating pad or ice, or seek out a physical therapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, or other in-person treatments? These are all valid options. But they generally overlook the fact that regular, consistent exercises that are tailored to your specific pain condition are the best way to keep your muscles and joints healthy over time and soothe pain flares when they do happen. Presented by a Hinge Health expert physical therapist, this event will discuss the benefits of virtual physical therapy programs, how they differ from traditional in-person physical therapy, and how Hinge Health can help you reduce back, joint, and muscle pain. 3 things you will take away from this event: - What virtual physical therapy includes - How it's similar and different from traditional in-person physical therapy - How Hinge Health's… Online Location: https://hingehealth.zoom.us/webinar/register/9617625361505/WN_5u1clSOiT2ONvm6UfZ-O9A#/registration. KEIO + EMORY SEMINAR SERIES | "Performing for Failure: Embodying Grief on Stage Through Ethnodrama"

CMBC "Performing for Failure: Embodying Grief on Stage Through Ethnodrama" Yoon Won Chang This talk is an excerpt from an ethnography that documents the making of a theater performance about grief after suicide in contemporary South Korea. I analyze how the actors and the director interpret and embody the real-life stories collected through interviews with suicide loss survivors. The creative team experiences the inevitable failures in interpreting the grief, yet attempts to embody the already fractured self-narratives of pain and healing provided by the survivors. I ask how grief becomes a collective experience and how the language and the body are negotiated in this process. "I am a PhD candidate in Anthropology at Emory University. For the past seven years, I have closely accompanied suicide loss survivors in Korea by organizing grief groups and other cultural events. In my Doctoral dissertation, I explore how suicide loss survivors' experience of grief is sculpted, negotiated, and refracted within the stat… University Event Topic: Seminars & Workshops. Emory Cinematheque: Sense and Sensibility

Film & Media Emory Cinematheque: Sense and Sensibility Directed by Ang Lee, 1995 | 136 min. Emma Thompson’s perceptive and witty Oscar-winning screenplay provided the foundation for this outstanding adaptation of Jane Austen’s first novel. We remain always at the side of the dispossessed Dashwood sisters, especially the practical Elinor (Thompson) and the passionate Marianne (Kate Winslet), as they debate how best to approach matters of the heart, over which they, like all of Austen’s heroines, have so little control. Boasting a fine cast of British actors--including the three romcom heartthrobs Hugh Grant, Greg Wise and Alan Rickman--the film perfectly marries Ang Lee’s penchant for long takes and stories of repressed emotion to late 18th century British society. During the lecture, Dr. Proot will discuss the study of handmade paper in the handpress period, 15th–17th centuries. In the transition of handwritten books to books printed with moveable type on common presses in the middle of the fifteenth century, the most frequently used substrate – i.e. handmade paper – played, in many ways, an important role. It is generally known that in the beginning paper sheets used for printed books were rather thick, and that paper became thinner over time. This process has a number of important implications for the book, which is in many regards a design object avant la… University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Art History. JWJI Colloquium featuring Tiffany Joseph

University Events Talk Title: Not All In: Race, Immigration, and Healthcare Exclusion in the Age of Obamacare Despite progressive policy strides in health care reform, immigrant communities continue to experience stark disparities across the United States. In Not All In, Tiffany D. Joseph exposes the insidious contradiction of Massachusetts' advanced health care system and the exclusionary experiences of its immigrant communities. Joseph illustrates how patients' race, ethnicity, and legal status determine their access to health coverage and care services, revealing a disturbing paradox where policy advances and individual experiences drastically diverge. Examining Boston's Brazilian, Dominican, and Salvadoran communities, this book provides an exhaustive analysis spanning nearly a decade to highlight the profound impacts of the Affordable Care Act and subsequent policy shifts on these marginalized groups. Not All In is a critical examination of the systemic barriers that perpetuate health care disparities. Joseph challenge… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. Idealization in Decision Theory: Is Common Knowledge like a Frictionless Plane?

University Events This talk begins with a contrast between how philosophers and economists typically model knowledge. Economists tend to model knowledge introspectively—agents know what they know, and what they don’t know—while (most) philosophers treat this as an occasionally convenient but strictly false idealization, and prefer to explore non-introspective models of knowledge. I examine a common philosophical picture on which introspection and common knowledge are in principle eliminable simplifying assumptions, and ask whether that way of understanding them is ultimately misguided. Emory Cinematheque: The Lady Eve

Film & Media Emory Cinematheque: The Lady Eve Directed by Preston Sturges, 1941 | 94 min. With The Lady Eve, the brilliant writer-director Preston Sturges created the Hollywood screwball comedy to top them all. It’s full of impossible situations, clever, double-entendre dialogue (necessary in the era of the Production Code) and plentiful pratfalls. When con artist Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck) seduces and then falls for an out-of-his-depth snake-studying heir Charles Pike (Henry Fonda) on an ocean liner, she gets more than she bargained for and resolves to set things right. Boasting a cast of Sturges comic regulars, as well as the always delightful Charles Coburn as Jean’s deceitful father “Colonel” Harrington, The Lady Eve was written expressly for Stanwyck and she goes to town in this “woman on top” romp. Meanwhile Fonda demonstrates his comic chops to the fullest. Who knew? Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Arts at Emory. Film & Media. Event Open To: All (Public). Wednesday, April 15, 2026, 7:30 PM. White Hall 208 | 301 Dowman Dr.

Guest Lecture: "Girlhood, Trauma, and Healing in the Musical Vernacular of Depression: A Close Reading of Princess Nokia's GIRLS (2025)”

Music Abstract: "In recent years, mental health has become an undeniable focal point in Anglo-American popular music in several key ways, including: as a set of terms – “depression,” “anxiety,” “PTSD,” etc. – loosely invoked by pop artists and fans to disclose, destigmatize, and normalize everyday experiences of sadness, loneliness, and despair; as an organizational theme on music streaming platforms in connection with mood and activity-based listening; and as a diverse musical and visual style forming around key musical personae and subgenres. I ultimately call this phenomenon the musical vernacular of depression, a dynamic expressive category that speaks to the prevalence of clinical depression and anxiety in young people, ongoing cultural depathologization of mental health, and intense cultural debate over what “depression” is.   This talk addresses the aesthetic politics of girlhood in the musical vernacular of depression through a close reading of Nuyorican rapper Princess Nokia’s 2025 album GIRLS, an album th… University Event Topic: Arts. DSci Happy Hour with Jo Guldi

University Events The Dates that Dominate Wikipedia's Telling of Global History - Making global histories is difficult. Research in global history has grappled for at least twenty years with the limitations that available methods pose to explaining global movements, connections, and phenomena (Clarence-Smith, Pomerance and Vries, 2006; Gänger and Jürgen Osterhammel, 2024). While these limitations can be pragmatic—from archival access and restrictions to individual scholars’ limited linguistic backgrounds—current theories in global history are most useful for national, regional, or small-scale comparative scopes rather than the large-scale global resonance of historical phenomena. Here, we introduce a comparably large-scale and computational approach by looking for convergences and divergences in the dates mentioned across hundreds of thousands of Wikipedia articles written in hundreds of languages. We find that four dates dominate a significant proportion of the dataset, indicating that articles across these languages exhibit… University Event Topic: Data Science. Artificial Intelligence. Emory Cinematheque: The Rules of the Game

Film & Media Emory Cinematheque: The Rules of the Game Directed by Jean Renoir, 1939 | 110 min. Jean Renoir’s satire of the French bourgeoisie “dancing on the edge of a volcano” (e.g. the Fascist threats at its borders) is the crowning achievement of his golden decade of filmmaking in France (though a case can be made for his magnificent anti-war Grand Illusion). Classically structured, Rules transforms from an urbane comedy of manners among an amoral, adulterous group of mostly wealthy Parisians into a fast-paced, upstairs/downstairs slapstick farce when all hell breaks loose at a costume ball at a Loire chateau. Renoir here achieves the height of naturalism through his signature style--complex staging captured by his frequent use of a mobile camera and long takes. The film is imbued with Renoir’s generous affection for all his characters, no matter how badly they behave. Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Arts at Emory. Film & Media. Event Open To: All (Public). Wednesday, April 22, 2026, 7:30 PM. White Hall 208 | 301 Dowman Dr.

Student Studio: What connects us?

Michael C. Carlos Museum How many photos are saved on your phone? What do we choose to capture, and how does that connect us? Join us for an afternoon of reflecting on the events and memories we have captured in the past and sharing those that remain impactful. Add a photo (or two!) to a collaborative installation in the exhibition Compassion: What Moves You?  at the Carlos Museum. This group creation will display the many ways you and your community connect. Participants can select a favorite from their own photos and print a Polaroid copy to keep!   Student Studio, like admission to the Carlos Museum, is always free for Emory students. First come, first served, while supplies last. Event Location: Level Three Exhibition Galleries. Department / Organization: Carlos Museum. Membership Link: https://carlos.emory.edu/join. Friday, April 24, 2026, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
