Molt Search Training: Ocean Shores

Are you a beachcomber who spends lots of time out on the sand? Ever wonder what kinds of crustaceans you are looking at? Join staff at the Coastal Interpretive Center on Saturday September 12th at noon for an opportunity to learn more about a community science program offered by Washington Sea Grant that helps identify and monitor populations of local crab species and also the invasive European Green Crab. Training will last for approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and will include an indoor classroom portion and an outside beach walk to look for molts.

Learn how to identify and report invasive European green crab sightings in the Salish Sea! Join ESC in a growing citizen science project called Molt Search, managed by Washington Sea Grant's Crab Team & Washington State University Extension.
At this training you'll learn:About the threats posed by this invasive species and what's being done about it. How to identify native and European green crabs. How to do a Molt Search and submit your findings through MyCoast. Registration required for all participants. This training is geared toward ages 13+. We'll start inside our center at Seahurst Park and then venture outside to the beach. We stay in the high tide zone so there will be uneven surfaces with mostly rocky and sandy substrate.
